I would die for you
God: I’m not a woman I’m not a man I am something that you’ll never understand I’ll never beat u I’ll never lie And if you’re evil I’ll forgive u by and by Jesus: I’m not your lover I’m not your friend I am something that you’ll never comprehend No need 2 worry No need 2 cry I’m your messiah and you’re the reason why The Holy Spirit: I’m not a human I am a dove I’m your conscious I am love All I really need is 2 know that U believe

Totally agree... I always knew the song lyrics were about God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit. The references are really obvious (not a woman/not a man... If you're evil I'll forgive you... I'm your messiah... I would die 4 U.... I'm a dove). The dove reference is obvious as that is the way The Holy Spirit is characterized on more than one occasion in the Bible. And during live performances Prince would usually sing "He's your messiah and you're the reason why cuz U...."

Yes, I think he was expressing his early love for the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The only line I think needs good contemplation by us is: "I'm not your friend." God/Jesus/HS is our Friend. And we can talk to Him /Her/It like a Friend. We think we can't because many of us have a punitive or bargaining Higher Power. But that isn't who He/She/It is. He/She/Ut is absolutely crazy about us all. "I'm not your friend" = I'm not at the human level (except in part with Jesus) and I will require things of you that your friends won't [Edited 2/21/17 8:10am]

The song's religious content was common knowledge to those with church education or upbringing and it was elementary yet clever. I agree. We know that he did grow religiously too (I see this as being especially in the later 1990s and up to and beyond his baptism in the JW church after 2000). Later (I believe after 2010) he expanded to add spirituality as well, with an open mind. People have describe that he taught them stay present and one young girl said he told her, "You might not want to he so nice all the time." He had some very healthy boundaries (that's why he ate so well). Great self-control and had enormous faith in himself and God . [Edited 2/21/17 15:21pm]

I don't know if it's profound or not, what i know is that i love the song, and the energy and conviction he sings it with.

Wow, this thread just further enhanced my love of 4 IWD4U! Back in October, on the thread "Complete list of songs that Quote Scripture" http://prince.org/msg/7/434106, some1 mentioned that IWD4U was about Jesus. And after I read that comment, the song made so much more sense to me and my love 4 it has grown. This interpretation of IWD4U, with each verse being from the perspective of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who make up the Holy Trinity, is absolutely magnificent. think this interpretations makes even more sense than the interpretation that the song is from the perspective of Christ. What a divinely beautiful song! Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

For me, this song established that P would never allow himself to be defined by limiting labels, and by extension he's asking us to expand beyond our own and society's self-imposed limitations.

Very interesting. This is one of my favorite songs. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think JW believe in the Trinity do they? I've often wondered how much of JW Prince really bought into. We know he didn't celebrate Christmas. Are there other aspects of evangelical Christianity (or Catholicism) that he didn't believe? Did he believe in the Trinity? Paisley Park is in your heart

Did he believe in the Trinity? No Prince did not believe in the Trinity. He believed that Jesus Christ is the only begotten son of Jehovah God. They are not co equal as the trinity teaches. They are separate not the same being. The Holy Spirit is Gods active force. He didn't believe that the soul was immortal. He didn't believe in Hellfire. If you would like to read for yourself please go to JW.ORG You can compare the difference between other religions and Jehovahs Witnesses. And you can look up the scriptures in your own Bible. Prince wrote this song before he became a JW.

He later changed the line 'I'm not your friend.' to 'But I'll be your friend.' I think it's on the live recording that I have on an import cd that has the these tracks: 1-Erotic City (Dance Mix) 2- I Would Die For YOu (Extended Version).

A bollocks interpretation. It's simply spiritual imagery defining how much higher Prince is feeling in a particular relationship I.e. The love transcends normal boundaries. It's not literally spiritual.

I thought he was singing about Jesus. I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.
