I disagree having the band in would make it Purple Rain 2. It would be how it is delivered. . But I don't mean in having the same dynamic and interaction with the band as in Purple Rain. A 'band of musicians/artists' Sheila E Jill Jones the Revolution the Family, but not using the 'band name' I mean more in a 'background scene' sense. Christopher was a paid musician/pianist for the club Venus de Milo. Remember the scene where he and Mary Sharon dance? Having the band playing at the club Alexis de Paris. Having the Family doing High Fashion @ Mary's party, having Christopher and his band playing the first night of the birthday as the hired band for the night etc. . UTCM & Parade were so different from Purple Rain that I don't think it could ever be PR 2 . In Purple Rain 11 songs were actually performed: Let's Go Crazy, Jungle Love, Modernaire, the Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, Sex Shooter, the Bird, Purple Rain, IWD4U & Baby I'm A Star... maybe 1 other song

Those are not rehearsal tapes but early versions of the same studio versions that ended on the album. The Screams Of Passion is from a rehearsal. Yes they've been floating around for years - albeit in poor quality. Would be great to have hear these in pristine quality

It's hard to compare because 1/ we don't have them in pristine quality 2/ the instrumental tracks are not completely finished and/or don't have the orchestra 3/ they were intended from day 1 to be sang by paul so Prince recorded his vocals with that in mind, in a similar way one can assume most Time songs were recorded with the Jaimie Starr voice because they were intended for Morris. In general I find a lot of people give too much importance to vocals, wishing Prince would sing the songs without realizing the finished work of art, as in Prince's vision, is the songs as we have them, with someone else's vocals on them. It's a bit as if someone said "I wish I had The Rainbow Children with Prince on drums instead of John", only it wouldn't cross anyone's mind (and still the songs would sound quite different with P on drums). To me Prince's vocal guides are interesting documents, similarly to any other early/work in progress version of a track, but the one that truly can be consideed finished is the one that was released, regardless of who sings. The mere fact that Clare Fischer's orchestra is absent from P's versions of The Family would make a Prince version of the album totally inferior to the released one in my eyes. Well, Clare Fischer's arrangements are missing. But Prince is clearly a better and more interesting singer than St Paul and Susannah. Zannaloaf is just sticking up for the associate artists as usual. No surprise there. The wooh is on the one!

Personally no. What makes Parade so cool and timeless is its divresity imo. Every song is so different than the next...but somehow all flows incredibly well.
I love The Family, and Prince's versions of course are better, but not as replacements to the tunes on Parade.

Also your playlist removes all the songs that segue into each other on side 1 of Parade, wtf that's one of the greatest things he ever did.

yes but these are rehearsals i bleive - not studio tracks with P's vocal guideline,,, or are you saying excellent quality studio tracks with P's vocal have surfaced?

another reason it would not have been good is that we would have less songs to enjoy.

No. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
