Bad Week for Prince Fans

First, we got the stupid interview of Mcmillan and Koppleman talking about future plans for a Prince circus and no plan for unreleased music and criticizing Prince's business as being a "mess" when we all know his business was just as he wanted it.

Then we get the CNN tabloid report where they talk to people who didn't even know Prince or Prince hadn't talked to in decades and the ones that did know Prince were duped into doing the interview. The tabloid trash insinuated that Prince was a long time druggy.

We also got news that Warners and Universal are splitting hus music catalog, which probably was inevitable given the lack of a will but still sad because we all know Prince would not have wanted this.

To top it off, Prince will be back on Spotify and itunes tonight. Of all of the things, this would bother Prince the most. This so-called tribute tonight is an industry move to promote his return to streaming.

He worked his whole life fighting the things that happened to him this week. Dont cry our Prince. One day all 7 will die.

1. I love Prince. He should have left a will explaining how his legacy/art shout be carried out.
-
2. While Prince may not have run his business this way in life, I fail how to see these things are "bad for fans."

How exactly is this bad for fans?

Prince is no longer here to make money for his estate. Also since he clearly lived in the moment none of us can say what he would or wouldn't have wanted as it could change from day today.

I agree with you about the will. To your point, because there is no will there his true fans are largely helpless to continue his lifelong fight against these things. Bad for fans in that it hurts to see what Prince stood for torn down in less than a year. This week in particular, was devastating in that regard.

Streaming is a necessary evil. How else do U expect younger people to hear his music?

As annoying as some of the tabloid stuff is, I'm glad he's being talked about at all after nearly a year. I think the public would forget about him otherwise.

He wouldnt want spotify.

I can stream Hit N Run Phase 2 from Apple Music right now. Surely that was approved by Prince? That record wasn't licensed to any record company.

Donny, I just love your posts.
No BS. You're a straight shooter.
I honestly think you should be an advisor to the estate.
Or SOMEone on this site should, and we should also be the people interviewed on those TV shows that depict Prince as different than he was:

I agree and yet, Prince could have easily prevented this had he left a will. On the bright side, allowing his music to be streamed will reach more people and enable casual listeners to discover the musical genius of Prince.

Ah yes, so that's why he often randomly fired people. Are you seriously claiming that for instance the period where PP was bleeding $2.5 million per month wasn't "a mess"? Or that his accountant had to force him to do the Japan leg of the Lovesexy Tour to pay off his debts wasn't "a mess"? Or that his hometown paper spending multiple pages describing numerous local business who had unpaid bills isn't "a mess"?

.

Or simply look at the fact that we're nine months on and his estate is still nowhere near settled.

I really don't know where you get this stuff, but it's waaaay off, as usual.

Prince's catalog was split because it was under two different owners. In the 2014 deal, part of Prince getting his WB masters back was that he would then license them back to WB exclusively. That means no one else can release that stuff except WB or with WB's permission. The NPG stuff is his and a different set of publishing rights, etc. That's why we don't hear stuff from The Gold Experience, Exodus, Emancipation, etc on a WB compilation. In the end, Prince owned his stuff. That is what Prince wanted.

How "it's a bad week for Prince fans" is really a puzzle. Who the fuck cares about HLN, or an interview with Michael Koppelman or Londell? You're also dead wrong in that he fought the tabloids. He didn't read them, or cared much about them. No celebrity does that if they want to stay sane. Someone somewhere is going to not like him, so he might as well do what he wants anyway. It's hypocrisy to say "we don't care about those tabloid shows", then turn around and give them enough credence that it ruins your week???? Honey, you're doing it wrong. Turn off the TV and go outside. Seriously - you're drinking the Kool Aid too hard and getting a brain freeze.

Prince did take drugs for years. Doesn't mean he was smoking crack but more than one person acquired pain relievers for him. On April 21, 1996, he had a medical situation because of drinking too much and barely eating. He references drugs in his songs, and references drinking (like "having another glass of Port and forget this" in "The Holy River"). Prince wasn't perfect - he was human, and flawed.

You speak like you speak for Prince and you're so off base, it's embarrassing. Prince is dead. His assets have to be monetized and make money. He never sat trying to live off those Purple Rain royalty checks. They run out after a while. His music back on Spotify etc is a way to keep the estate with a positive cash flow. So does the PP tours, the reissues of albums, etc etc.

"So called tribute" - judging before it even fucking airs?! Sit down. Honestly, your blathering on about what you think Prince wanted, opposed to looking at things without your purple-tinted glasses is nauseating.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Agree especially the bolded above.
It is so upsetting watching all the vultures right now. Van was not his friend he is trashing Princes legacy, and using his death to get his name out there for his own profit. He is not the only one...It is beyond sick how no one has handled this with any respect for a true legend.
The only show that should have been allowed to air should have content of what a great performer he was and how there is NO ONE else that can compare. Along with snippets of him doing what he loved performing live.
I am just a sad, hurt and disappointed today as the day he left this earth.

This was a GREAT week for Prince fans. Things are progressing and moving closer to the date where we'll see the reissues. June 6th has already been announced. And the streaming services will help build up excitement and interest for the eventual reissues.

Prince wanted his unreleased music to be released after he died, this week we made strong moves in that direction. His music has also is being made accessable to more people.
