Prince's catalog was split because it was under two different owners. In the 2014 deal, part of Prince getting his WB masters back was that he would then license them back to WB exclusively. That means no one else can release that stuff except WB or with WB's permission. The NPG stuff is his and a different set of publishing rights, etc. That's why we don't hear stuff from The Gold Experience, Exodus, Emancipation, etc on a WB compilation. In the end, Prince owned his stuff. That is what Prince wanted.

How "it's a bad week for Prince fans" is really a puzzle. Who the fuck cares about HLN, or an interview with Michael Koppelman or Londell? You're also dead wrong in that he fought the tabloids. He didn't read them, or cared much about them. No celebrity does that if they want to stay sane. Someone somewhere is going to not like him, so he might as well do what he wants anyway. He references drugs in his songs, and references drinking (like "having another glass of Port and forget this" in "The Holy River"). Prince wasn't perfect - he was human, and flawed.

He never sat trying to live off those Purple Rain royalty checks. They run out after a while. His music back on Spotify etc is a way to keep the estate with a positive cash flow. Prince wanted his unreleased music to be released after he died, this week we made strong moves in that direction. His music has also is being made accessable to more people.
