I was at the Superbowl that year. Only 'concert' I have ever seen of Prince's live. A family member of mine used to work for one the NFL teams that went that year. (I won't say which for privacy). We were able to buy tickets for ticket price (not scalped). It was the nosebleed section but still fun. I was excited about seeing Prince but didn't know more than a handful of his songs. He did impress me however. I did get emotional during Purple Rain (and every one was singing along, even my ex-husband). It rained the entire game, but it was a warm rain. I remember being surprised that the half-time show went off without a hitch even with the rain.. I remember for the first time realizing that Prince was cute. On the big screen, he looked really good but I hated the doo-rag and wished he would take it off. I remeber thinking if he would just remove the doo rag, he'd be hot. He did eventually take it off ). I remember thinking it was odd that he wore the Miami Dolphin colors (the stadium there is filled with turquoise and orange). I remember loving his medley of "All along the watchtower" and "Best of You" and being surprised that he was such a good guitar player. However, after Prince died and I rewatched the super bowl half-time clips, he sounded even better on the telecast. Being way in the back and contending with blowing rain did taint the experience (not enough for me to have been impressed at the time but still.). I do have pictures somewhere in storage of the event and stage and Prince on the big screen. It was a honor and I have fond memories of the whole trip. I didn't want to come home. When we flew back home, it was 2 degrees and snowing. The warm Florida rain was missed. Also, side note, I saw Gene Hackman and Coach Del rio sitting together in a Miami restaurant that weekend--Another Highlight for sure. Oh, and seeing firsthand the fighter planes flying over the stadium and Billy Joel performing the national anthem was really cool.

This was sort of what I was talking about in reference to his legacy and the wide exposure to the mainstream that the SB preformance added to. Most people had no idea and Prince hadn't been exposed to that level of mainstream attention since probably Batman. That's a cool story about being there. One thing I could never figure out is "where did the lightning come from"? It looked superimposed on the TV. Could the stadium audience see it?

On the recent Dr Funk podcast Mr Hayes says the lightening was superimposed

Agreed. His legacy was intact regardless at that point but, like purplerabbithole attested to, there were millions of people who never really had any idea what Prince could do and lumped him in "washed up 80's artists". A wide audience like the Super Bowl really opened eyes
