I believe this song has been conflated with other tracks through the passage of time, the exact dating is off, and heavily mythologized. Just how significantly involved was Susan Rogers in the role of engineer on P's own tracks at the very end of 1986/beginning of 1987? Even though 'in the camp' through 1988 (and on the payroll until 1990), she seems to have been relieved from engineering obligations on his own studio material very shortly after the Revolution's disbanding.

.

Good question!

Except she was there and has explained the story behind it's recording many times in great detail.

.

I am questioning timing, and the surrounding circumstances, for accuracy. I didn't say that she wasn't present as such. For having gone into great detail, to an intended audience of mostly dedicated fans, it seems peculiar that she would omit that the song borrows, if only for one brief line, from one of his better known and most celebrated rehearsal bootlegs.

.

Even though she dealt with the material from a privilged firsthand vantage-point, surely she cannot be so out-of-touch with what is out there in the world of unofficial releases, for point of comparison.

.

I have nothing to add about Wally because I haven't even heard the snippet yet. But I'd just like to also say FUCK EYE RECORDS.

My solution: I have downloaded every EYE release, for free, and will continue to do so. I realize someone had to buy a copy in order to share it, but, what's done is done. As soon as they are released they get posted all over the internet, so, fuk em.

I completely agree and do the same thing.

we sometimes forget how incredibly lucky we are with all the stuff that DID get shared over the years. fantastic soundboard shows, brilliant studio tracks. I have more Prince stuff than I could ever absorb as much as I would like to. I have a lot of other bands/artists that I listen to and there simply is too much great music...

of course every new leak is welcomed by me with a very big grin and incorporated in my chronological playlists immediately. so no buying boots for me, but I still am very thankful that people first buy pressed stuff and then share those releases freely.

nothing new being said by me, but still a shoutout to all the people who released stuff throughout all those years!

I worry that the hype around the song will lead to it being underwhelming.

It may be. Usually things that are built up that much are. (Beach Boys' Smile, anyone?) When there's too much hype, I try to change my approach to: I'm just grateful to finally be able to hear it. Also, not "what will it do for me", but rather "what did it do for the artist". And then, will I be able to find a connection with that piece of work.

.

1986 was still a very inspired year for him, so I expect we'll be able to find something about it we like! Even if it turns out to not be the holy grail of P songs.

Everyone needs to remember that the song she talks about being so amazing was the original version, with the highly personal lyrics, which was deleted. The one we're hearing is the re-do.

Exactly.

The only reason I'm not hyped about Wally is that she also thinks "In A Large Room With No Light" is amazing. And too me it always sounded like fingernails on a blackboard.
To me that song has always been a song that a hardcore Arvil Lavinge or Vanessa Carlton could love.

eek That song is phenomenal, really one of Prince's crown jewels in terms of composition. And the fact that THAT stayed in the vault just shows how Prince's genius was on fire in the mid 80's.

He kept it in the vault because I think he wasn't happy with it. I personally can see why.
Some things are better left under your mattress. Well, at the very least he didn't want to sound like Vanessa Carlton.

Tell me it couldn't be a Vanessa Carlton outtake

Ridiculous lol! Musically Prince was doing some pretty complex stuff in there, especially for a pop song. I certainly hear nothing that would remind me of Vanessa Carlton - vocally or musically.

hmph!

Same mf isht. Let's remember, I'm pretty sure I read that It's a Wendy Lisa song mostly, and that's why it has that White Chicks/Prince/Vanessa Carlton mashup vibe to it.

Ive always hated the song and I got what he was "trying" to do (unsuccessfully) and I could see why he hid it in the vault. But it's always been fingernails on the chalkboard for me.

The original recording is my favorite unreleased song. If a version of Dream Factory was released with "In A Large Room With No Light" and "Power Fantastic" on it, it would automatically become a contender for favorite Prince album.

That's cool. And I love Power Fantastic. But it's on a whole other level of sophistication to Large Room and it's moonbeam levels.

...but that track shows how much of a "GENIUS" Prince was! It shows how ahead of his time he was. He was a mopping white girl writing horrible white girl
songs before Vanessa Carlton or Arvile Lavinge were even born!
Now THAT'S some genius thing going on right there.
