Now about that `Wally` song:
What is the relation to 'Billy'?

Probably you didn't read well my post, or maybe I did something wrong writing it.

I'm one of those that invest in some EMP-resistant storage called CD.

What I don't understand is the "share 4 free"-"pressed CD" debate, as if we're talkin' of good vs. evil.

And that's all, I'm not paying for the music, I'm paying for the additional service to have the music I love pressed on CD with a booklet.

It's totally possible to download free files shared by other fans and burn those files to your own EMP resistant CDR without supporting those that make a profit off Prince's work by exploiting other fans.

Just sayin'... wink

Yes, but factory pressed CDs have a longer life in respect to CDR.

I have 5 years old CDR that are already illegible. Not all, but many.

When there is a chance to have a factory pressed CD, I always prefer it.

My take on the community has been in the past few years tons of new pristine sources for free shared which has been incredible.

I am thankful to those who are sharing.

I truly believe that the those new leaks are further clarifying his genius.

You can hear more details than orig poor quality sources.

I do get a little pissed at Questlove for always "showing off" on his access.

Music is the best...

Why you so mad at Eye Records.

May be they'll give us fans what we want, or maybe you culd do the decent thing and get it out there before they start taking orders.

If you feel that strongly you should act now.

I'm glad they're willing to stump up the cash so that we can get to hear this stuff. Not that I'll ever give any money to them but once the CD's are released they'll soon enough find themselves shared for free, so I don't see any problem.

If collectors are bothered by Eye making money, then the easy answer is to release the stuff widely and loudly so that there's no money to be made by Eye.

Ok desparate for this to leak. Surely someone could share the full track before the bootlegger.

How do u know "the bootlegger" even has the full thing?

For all we know that 15 secs may be all they have. I wouldnt be surprised

That's my take on it. They want to pretend like they have the full thing and are threatening to sell it so that some "hero" can leak it to try to cut their into profits, knowing that when the person leaks it, they're just gonna press it and sell it on a cd anyway. It's the same tactic that's been used before by various bootleggers (remember "Lil Sister"? lol ). I call bullshit.

What was it that Prince said about bootlegs? Oh yeah - sharing is fine, but selling is wrong.

I say Fuck Eye Records because they make thousands of dollars from stolen material.

It's very easy and a simplistic way of looking at things to say "leak the song" without knowing the backstory or how it came to be circulating or what relationships you could fuck up by doing that.

Like I said before, I burned bridges already, and maybe I should have said nothing at all.

It is what it is... if EyeRecords have it, you'll all hear it soon enough anyway. I think Mindbells9 and Revolution81 have hit the nail on the head though. And given that I'm now getting random-ass messages from people I've never heard from before trying to get me to leak it, that supports that theory.

OK on the "Fuck Eye Records", let's not talk about it, I can understand the point even if to me it doesn't make all that big difference (for a bootleeger that make thousands of dollars from stolen material there are 90% if not more of P fans that would die to listen to unreleased tracks shared for free only and only)....

.... but after reading your post now I have to be convinced by someone that the same P that, as you remarked, said "sharing is fine, but selling is wrong" (and it's true) would be proud and happy (and was when he was alive) to know that "Wally" and all other unreleased tunes he doesn't want to "free" were and are in someone's hands, "stolen" as you said, sharing for free or not.

That said, nothing against anyone. If someone have a reserved door to the Vault, lucky him.

I've never been in any small circle, I don't regret to not be in, I could die without ever listen to "Wally" and I would be grateful the same for all the great P music I listened in all these years.
Particularly for the music P wanted me to listen, well before the music he wanted to keep for himself and no other.

So contrary to what Susan Rogers has said all these years, "Wally" apparently wasn't totally new and written that night. That chorus that leaked is very similar to "Billy's Sunglasses" which had been played around with a couple of years before. So Prince took that idea and reworked it into "Wally". Still cool to see what he did with it, and I hope to get to hear the full track soon.

Oh wow, thanks for the info. I didn't know that...

idea Good point, IMHO.

Uh, so the snippet at the link posted earlier...that's really "Wally" ?! Same lyrics as "Billy", just he's saying "Wally" instead. And the flourish at the end reminds me of "Slow Love." lol

More important, that snippet sounds NOTHING like what I expected based on Susan's description of the track ! eek

Edit: Judging by some posts here, others have heard more of the track, or at least heard different snippets (with different lyrics). Wonder if the snippets are coming from the same source? hmmm

Obviously that isn't happening! YT and other open sources are still flooded with unreleased Prince (and related artists) material. A lot of stuff has been posted and then disappeared, but the point is SO much stuff has been circulated widely since 4/21.

However, SOMEONE is doing a little chair. A month ago I got a copyright strike from YT for a Prince video. According to the closing credits, the copyright belongs to NPG Records. I actually thought this was a good sign: They're finally cracking down on stuff!

BUT then I noticed the exact same video (not hidden in any way) is posted by someone else, and its been up on that channel for almost three months. Makes me wonder why that's overlooked (or allowed?) while I got slapped. nuts shrug

Having listened to the small bit, I would seriously doubt this was the "original" version.

I don't remember Susan saying a horn player was present. It was just she and him. So that horn blare at the very end suggests this was a later re-cording.

Or perhaps it was a sampled bit, or perhaps he was overdubbing the original at some point.

But I would guess it's not the original version.

I believe this song has been conflated with other tracks through the passage of time, the exact dating is off, and heavily mythologized. Just how significantly involved was Susan Rogers in the role of engineer on P's own tracks at the very end of 1986/beginning of 1987? Even though 'in the camp' through 1988 (and on the payroll until 1990), she seems to have been relieved from engineering obligations on his own studio material very shortly after the Revolution's disbanding.

My solution: I have downloaded every EYE release, for free, and will continue to do so. I realize someone had to buy a copy in order to share it, but, what's done is done. As soon as they are released they get posted all over the internet, so, fuk em.
