Difficult to judge a song from a 15 second snippet, but I didn't expect a line about freaky glasses in it! [Edited 2/5/17 6:09am]

I meant the song. I wasn't talking about sound quality. And why does it mean everything will be on lockdown for everybody? The wooh is on the one!

See, that's what I don't get. People are all freaked out about the idea that Eye will get these things and sell them--the people they're selling them to are (a) people who have to have everything in physical form because they're some sort of disc fetishists (by the way, I do the same as far as official releases, but for unofficial a file is fine), or, possibly, (b) people (who might already be included in [a]) who then go on to share those Eye releases with the larger community... and while a lot of what Eye releases now is already pretty openly available, there have been a few things on recent Eye comps that I hadn't run across circulating elsewhere.
Why exactly does it matter so much that Eye sells what's already been available for free? Or is it that Eye pays somebody else to get access to some material (since not everything they release is more widely available), and the elite collectors feel betrayed by those people so they close ranks? I agree that in an ideal world no one (except maybe Prince's heirs--and since he didn't name any, I'm not absolutely committed to that idea) would be making money off of these tracks--but I suspect that people often already have gotten cash somewhere along the lines of transmission, and I know that making money is almost entirely the only reason we'll ever have legitimate releases of anything at this point. So someone else makes some for an illegitimate release... big deal.
I'm really trying to understand this. I'd rather be listening to some music, though.

He recycled Billy! I wonder if the Billy rehearsal was turned into a full song in its own right, or if Prince just remembered the line from the rehearsal performance. It seems a little more lightweight than I was expecting. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

Assuming that's in response to the "snippet" above--yeah, I second that response.

Why do u think? do u think this song has ended up with a boot label by honest means? No, it means that out of the small group of people trusted with it somebody has been a rat and used it for their own selfish profit. So trust has been shattered, and the people who have more stuff like this will be sitting on it even tighter in the future All for the sake of a few $ Bitch this ain't the movies

If I'm understanding your question, I can tell you that Susan Rogers has spoken about this song and hurt over loss of a great love. With that background, she describes how, in the song, he asks to borrow the glasses when he is considering getting dressed up really fine and going out, but later, I believe, decides against it.

Dude! Who cares about the sound!? Its about getting to hear a much heralded mythic song in the purple cannon! Even if they just posted the lyrics would be enough!
This is why the leggage community rarely shares. Because the purple denizens complain about the music when its released and didnt have to be.
This is crazy..a snippett giving us a hint after 30 years is given and this is your response? Complainng about mono?

Okay, so it's the betrayal thing. Got it. As much as I think I ever will, anyway. Thanks.

Cool. I half listened to the Susan Rogers interview the other day, but I guess I didn't pay much attention! I do remember her talking about the lah-Dee-dah bit though

I can't be precise myself. : ) There are multiple interviews (e.g. Podcast Juice, Red Bull Academy), and I can get confused about what particulars were said in what interview.

The elite collectors get part of their identity from having this stuff that no one else has. A few, including Big Chick, probably truly want to protect the music. But for most of them, it's purely selfish reasons. If the music gets out, then the elite collector becomes like everyone else. . It's like the Occupy 99% movement, where Prince music is the currency. The 1% want to retain their elite status, while the rest want equality. .

Am I the only one that cringes as soon as you hear Eric Leeds? No doubt he's a talented player, but those frequencies would be better off playing only Prince music.

I wish people would stop with this "elite" bullshit. Do you think these collectors go around saying "oh, I've got all these unheard tracks... l'm so elite.?" A stupid org invention to describe someone who has something they don't for whatever reason(s).

I get that no one wants to "out" their source. That was probably only (or mostly) a factor when Prince was alive. He could know that he only gave a song to one person, and if it leaks it's obvious who leaked it. But that really is no longer the case.
I dont really get the concern about someone else making money off something. If people want to pay for something, let them. All you can do is put it out there as widely as possible. If Eye Records or whoever else is funding terrorists with the money they make off Prince bootlegs - well then maybe that is a concern. Other than that, the only concern would be "why are they making money instead of me?" Then sell it yourself. "I dont want to make money off his music." Then don't sell it.
The mentality of keeping outtakes to yourself just to prevent someone else from making money off of it I just can't fully justify. You didn't write the lyrics or play the instruments, so who made you keeper of the sacred music? There are many thousands who would get great joy from hearing this stuff, but the "idea" of someone ELSE making some money off it makes someone withhold it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just sharing my opinion. No one is obligated to "release" their outtakes. I have/had some material that was rare, and I wanted to trade it for uncirculating material with the intent of getting more material in wide circulation. Most everyone was so guarded and petty I just gave up. I'll put my stuff out to wide circulation when I can. The only thing stopping me at this point is a lack of technical know-how and a severe shortage of time to figure it out. I will also admit that having something that no one else has does give a feeling of being "special" and privileged. But really, its bullshit. I'm not special because I have this material, just lucky. I've always been a bit frustrated that people are withholding material out of this "privileged" (some call it "elite") mentality, but I've come to understand it since I felt it too.
That said, if I put out my material and Eye Records or whoever turns around and makes a ton of money off it... I would be mildly jealous and wish that I could have made that money instead of them, to be honest. I have bills and money struggles like everyone else. But... I don't want to get into legal trouble for selling something that I don't own the rights to. If someone else wants to put themselves in that danger, that's up to them.
This is not directed to Militant or anyone else. I'm very grateful for everything that has been shared throught the years. It would be very easy to just keep all info to ones self and let that stuff collect dust in a drawer somewhere and be the only one to ever hear it. Sharing info and material takes effort and some level of risk, so those who do anything should be applauded.
