Honestly if the second disk was just even the Hallway version of Computer Blue, a great quality version of Elecric Intercourse, and songs like Wonderful Ass and Roadhouse Garden I would be perfectly content

Susan the engineer that the remaster is being worked on in a podcast interview a few weeks ago. She was consulted on it. WB has the license to work on this project. Universal will take over in 2018 so there is still time for WB to put this out before there license expires. Not sure they would stop working on it just because they are not going to be in the picture down the road. I believe they knew their deal was only for a few years so this should not have an effect on anything.

Universal, Sony and WB were all competiting for the rights to the vault. So, in a word, WB lost against Universal. The game is changed.

.

What kind of work exactly is needed for a re-release, knowing the album has been remastered in 2011 (if not in 2009!) and that they had just to pick outtakes already known by the biggest fans or extented b faces ? And all in one disc ! Knowing that Prince's tracks last often more than 6 minutes before being edited for an album.

.

It's highly doubtful that WB will release PR deluxe knowing they will lose the rights 5 or 6 months later. They won't do the job for Universal, with promoting and all. This news complicate even more the things, and they were already extremely complicated.

.

As are the things now, nothing new will be release before 2018.

Even from Universal there is still no word about reprinting post 1993 albums, or even making them available digitally. Now that they've got the rights, what are they waiting for to make them digitally available ?

And what about streaming rights for the 1994-2016 era ?

In fact, everything is still to be continued...

.

Edit : look at this interview from Mcmillan and Koppelman : http://www.billboard.com/...l-mcmillan

.

Not a word about Purple Rain deluxe, and they confess they only began to look into the vault...

Don't believe that until it happens. The simple fact that they've already announced that they're not gonna get access to the WBR-era releases until next year, I wouldn't be surprised that negociations are ongoing and that still can fall through. And that alternate versions of WBR-era material isn't going to be released until that is settled. I find it hard to beleive that WBR would just surrender a significant part of their back catalogue, especially considering they've just received Moonbeam Levels and are about to drop a significant amount of PR-era music.

WB is in possesion of their own Prince Vault at Warner Chapel offices. ...Moonbeam Come from there !

I hope they cleaned or remastered those track better, because moonbeam levels sounds no
better than the last bootleg copy we had of it.

totally disagree. I would love to hear Prince sing sex shooter. I think he wrote it for himself

"Billboard’s attempts to pry further details from Warner were initially unsuccessful, but a bounty of strong unreleased songs exist from the Purple Rain sessions, including long-bootlegged tracks like “Electric Intercourse,” “G-Spot,” “Possessed” and “Wonderful Ass,” along with B-sides like “17 Days,” “God” and “Erotic City” and Prince-helmed material with The Time and Apollonia 6.

Equally tantalizing are the concert films, one of which is presumably the long out-of-print Prince and the Revolution Live, a concert filmed in March 1985 in Syracuse, N.Y., toward the end of the Purple Rain tour."

Am I the only one who is incredibly excited about this !?!? Going by what Susan said, it sounds like they (which includes her, since she stated she has been involved) are really trying to get this right. I just hope no glitches occur and this actually gets released, LOL!

Prince is gone since 1 year, and they still can't re-release an album with old archives ? That's incredible.

That's incredible. If by the grammys there are still no official announcement of Purple Rain deluxe with the tracklist and the streaming deal, it's dead.

So, by the grammys, there was an official announcement. At last !

And I'm really glad this is finally released ! With much more material than what was announced (1 disc, no video material). Let's just hope the video will be cleaned up and remastered, not like the horrendous live from BAD 25.

If WB has a guy like Bill Inglot master it, it will be fine. Inglot did great work when he was at Rhino (check out his work on the Costello and Paul Simon catalogs to see what Prince COULDV'E sounded like...if he wasn't so pissed off at Warners regarding his old work )

As a big Costello fan I agree his work sounds great on that! With Purple Rain even simply a little more low end and general clarity would be all I would ask for when it comes to a remaster

The Prince catalog on CD sounds pretty dismal. These CDs are from the 80s, in most cases, and the digital transfer equipment has progressed since then. With a sympathetic mastering engineer (like Bill Inglot who did a lot of Rhino CDs , or Vic Anesini , who did wonders with the Elvis Presley catalog), the Prince catalog could sound a lot better, with a deeper bass response and more top end as well. A great example of what could be done is the Bruce Springsteen remasters from 2014 of his early work, which sounded pretty bad and now sounds wonderful .

Susan Rogers was talking a little and she said that typically when they do the mastering they use a different EQ balance for CDs than for vinyl. And that some of them they used the same settings for both. I am thinking that alone might be the reason for some of the poor sound of the CDs.

Well I have to say this and I'm not sure where it should go. So. I'm not impressed with Moonbeam Levels. Or should I say I can't listen to Prince say he's looking for a better place to die and he doesn't want to die!!! Are they crazy?? Who in the world made that shit decision to have him singing about death on the first release out of the vault???? There is supposed to be a thousand songs in there and we get this???? If Susan Rodgers is responsible for that decision I'm not excited about anything she does!!! I

I don't think you've been paying attention, at least where it comes to that song. I mean that "Moonbeam Levels" was set to be on various albums through the years, but never materialized. It's a highly requested song from fans, even at the Celebrations for Crystal Ball 2. Them putting it on 4Ever was perfect, because it's at least one song we've long loved, and they gave us. Plus it's just quirky enough of a title that it'd get people's attention. "What is a moonbeam level anyway??"

Prince always talked about dying - the fact that he's dead now and a song w/ a death lyric is in it shouldn't really phase anyone, in the grander scheme of Prince lyrics. It's like arguing that "I Would Die 4 U", etc shouldn't be on a post-mortem compilation. We're adults here, and we all hurt. But let's stay logical. Someone on here recently said that no releases should come out in April, or in June. I mean - every month can't be off limits, because of a birthday, or a death day, or whatever. The same goes for songs.

Rogers isn't responsible for the release. Remember, PR Deluxe was supposed to come out in 2014, but it didn't for reasons discussed repeatedly here and beyond.

_____

To the OP, It's January 21. I'm not sure how WB is "taking their time" with it. This has been discussed very recently about it not coming out on freakin' January 1 or something. Y'all need to calm down, and just wait for it. (We all want the package, but fussin' won't make it come faster.) They're not going to release music every month. The days of NPGMC type releases are over, and illogical.

Good God, this is a perfect explanation.

I always loved hearing the unusual word choices and pronunciation he used in his music and this one is just too too sad. I got the cd when it came out and after hearing the phrase another place to die I couldn't really listen to it until today and now I'm sorry I did. Does anyone have these feeling about the song??? I don't care if I'm being too picky. It's my heart and that hurt!!!

I agree. He kept it in the vault for very good reason. Nails on the chalkboard board for me. Same with Large Room no light.

I get the dissonance he was going for, and I'm sure these are more W&L involved songs. But they are amateurish and more Vanessa Carlton than Prince songs.

Susan Rodgers has been very vocal that the way they recorded the music was not the best. That she was not a producer and they did everything ad hoc and quickly moved on. She has been vocal on all her interviews as to how she is not pleased with the quality of the recordings. She does not feel they were properly or professionally recorded.

The loudness wars is a real thing but had absolutely NOTHING to do the shoddy recordings of his work . He was cool with it, and that was that.

I agree. But remastering CAN BE done well - listen to Bill Inglot's remasters of Paul Simon and Elvis Costello, or Vic Anesini's remastering of Elvis Presley or Simon & Garfunkel, or Ace Records' "Chartbusters USA" series to hear how great engineering can bring the best out of the music, and add clarity and depth
