Honestly if the second disk was just even the Hallway version of Computer Blue, a great quality version of Elecric Intercourse, and songs like Wonderful Ass and Roadhouse Garden I would be perfectly content

totally disagree. I would love to hear Prince sing sex shooter. I think he wrote it for himself I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

http://www.billboard.com/...details-of "Billboard’s attempts to pry further details from Warner were initially unsuccessful, but a bounty of strong unreleased songs exist from the Purple Rain sessions, including long-bootlegged tracks like “Electric Intercourse,” “G-Spot,” “Possessed” and “Wonderful Ass,” along with B-sides like “17 Days,” “God” and “Erotic City” and Prince-helmed material with The Time and Apollonia 6. Equally tantalizing are the concert films, one of which is presumably the long out-of-print Prince and the Revolution Live, a concert filmed in March 1985 in Syracuse, N.Y., toward the end of the Purple Rain tour." "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

Now THIS is what I think the majority of us have been looking for
I'm like U CandaceS, I just want to hold it in until it get's closer to the release date...

So, by the grammys, there was an official announcement. At last ! And I'm really glad this is finally released ! With much more material than what was announced (1 disc, no video material). Let's just hope the video will be cleaned up and remastered, not like the horrendous live from BAD 25.

The Prince catalog on CD sounds pretty dismal. These CDs are from the 80s, in most cases, and the digital transfer equipment has progressed since then. With a sympathetic mastering engineer (like Bill Inglot who did a lot of Rhino CDs , or Vic Anesini , who did wonders with the Elvis Presley catalog), the Prince catalog could sound a lot better, with a deeper bass response and more top end as well. A great example of what could be done is the Bruce Springsteen remasters from 2014 of his early work, which sounded pretty bad and now sounds wonderful . #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Susan Rogers was talking a little and she said that typically when they do the mastering they use a different EQ balance for CDs than for vinyl. And that some of them they used the same settings for both. I am thinking that alone might be the reason for some of the poor sound of the CDs. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

You're shameless. | |

There must be some reason, because the 80s CDs, especially "Sign" and "1999" sound pretty anemic #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Or should I say I can't listen to Prince say he's looking for a better place to die and he doesn't want to die!!! Are they crazy?? Who in the world made that shit decision to have him singing about death on the first release out of the vault???? There is supposed to be a thousand songs in there and we get this???? If Susan Rodgers is responsible for that decision I'm not excited about anything she does!!! I always loved hearing the unusual word choices and pronunciation he used in his music and this one is just too too sad. I got the cd when it came out and after hearing the phrase another place to die I couldn't really listen to it until today and now I'm sorry I did. Does anyone have these feeling about the song??? I don't care if I'm being too picky. It's my heart and that hurt!!! I agree. He kept it in the vault for very good reason. Nails on the chalkboard board for me. Same with Large Room no light. I get the dissonance he was going for, and I'm sure these are more W&L involved songs. But they are amateurish and more Vanessa Carlton than Prince songs.

. Look up the Loudness Wars. Loudness is not remastering.

Susan Rodgers has been very vocal that the way they recorded the music was not the best. That she was not a producer and they did everything ad hoc and quickly moved on. She has been vocal on all her interviews as to how she is not pleased with the quality of the recordings. She does not feel they were properly or professionally recorded.
The loudness wars is a real thing but had absolutely NOTHING to do the shoddy recordings of his work . He was cool with it, and that was that. [Edited 2/15/17 6:59am]

. So the mastering should not compress the shit out of the dynamics but compensate for the shoddiness instead. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I agree. But remastering CAN BE done well - listen to Bill Inglot's remasters of Paul Simon and Elvis Costello, or Vic Anesini's remastering of Elvis Presley or Simon & Garfunkel, or Ace Records' "Chartbusters USA" series to hear how great engineering can bring the best out of the music, and add clarity and depth #SOCIETYDEFINESU

That's for sure. Brilliant albums like "Dirty Mind" and "Purple Rain" and especially "Sign o the Times" could sound a hell of a lot better. Listen to what Bruce Springsteen did with his early albums, the recent CDs are relevatory #SOCIETYDEFINESU
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Impossible to do anything with "Dirty Mind".
Remastering is such a scam for the most part, anyway. I know a very big reissue label who uses someone who learnt to master from looking at internet tutorials over 2 weeks.

Like anything, it could be done well or done shitty. Look for the work of Bill Inglot or Vic Anesini to hear how great rematered music can sound #SOCIETYDEFINESU
