Listening to these tributes just brings home the point that Prince was the glue that held everything together. It's not the same without him on stage. sad

Since Prince's passing I've listened mostly to whatever live stuff I can get my hands on. A lot of that includes covers. I'm just reminded over and over what an amazing performer he was. Obviously no one could live up to that but I would have preferred Bruno being Bruno not a Prince impersonator. And I honestly don't know why the Time was there. This was supposed to be a Prince tribute not a Purple Rain tribute.

Bruno did his thing, but the trap that the Grammy's (and some other tributes) get trapped in is pinning Prince to ONLY the Purple Rain era.

To fully encompass his music and appeal, they could have borrowed a page from the Lady Gaga David Bowie tribute the year before. Pinpoint 5-7 songs that were fan favorites (maybe one from each of the 1980-1988 albums) and showcase the eclecticism that was Prince. He defied labels and the tributes shouldn't be relegated to just one era. SHeila E got it right at the BET awards by offering a tease of a little bit of everything.

Yes yes yes! Prince had an amazing career that spanned over 3 decades. I'm still waiting for someone to properly pay tribute to that.

Bruno is talented. I doubt but he isn't Prince. No one can be but the late unique Prince.
So Bruno can put on a purple jacket and a white puffy shirt and play a white cloud guitar and sing Princes song but he is still not prince. I wouldn't have minded so much if Bruno wore his own clothes and played a guitar other than the white cloud. As someone said to me on twitter it was like a Las Vegas tribute show.

To be fair to Bruno Mars, that wasn't easy, I thought he did a really good job.

He's not Prince, no one is...I thought he brought a lot of energy and star quality to Let's Go Crazy.

What I dint get is why MORE of the people that wprked with him werent there? I dig Bruno a lot, but lots of living, breathing musicians who WORKED WITH PRINCE and are awesome in their own right could have made a far better tribute.

Not saying Bruno is not talented, I am saying that it is disturbing to see him dressed up as Prince.

This was not a tribute at all in my mind. A real tribute would have been more intimate and would have actually taught the audience something about the man. Bruno dessing up to impersonate Prince does not accomplish that. It is disrespectful to Prince and his legacy.

The only one who can pull off Prince.....is Prince.

No I don't get why they were there singing their songs when there was a limited amount of time. If this was some CBS Prince special where they had an hour or two fine, but it wasn't. I think there's better Prince associates (ahem The Revolution or NPG members) they could have had on stage.

He is spot on, if Peter Gene Hernandez had any sense he would have not agreed to play dress up.

the grammy's clearly thought Prince and a tribute was significant or they wouldn't have waited until the end. It just drives me nuts that he keeps getting thrown back to Purple Rain era, as if he didn't do anything significant after that.

.

Morris looked emotional to me; I'm sure it was very hard. I just wish he would have sang his new song https://www.amazon.com/gp..._tlw_thmb7 with perhaps some video footage of Prince in the background to show the different eras and how much he transformed over the decades....Oh well, rant over. I kinda hope the so called tributes are finally over.

.

I saw Tyka in the audience; does anyone know what her opinion was?

Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

instead of lame ass Prince wannabe's like Bruno Mars and Bilal, pretending to be Prince, why dont they just show about 30 minutes of P's greatest and rarest concert footage...that would be a FAR more appropriate tribute...Bruno Mars was so horrible, it felt like they were mocking Prince... i guess Weird Al Yankovic turned down the gig, and they hired the horse jockey Prince impersonator Bruno Mars...

The best tribute of the night was the Google commercial. I cried my eyes out, then I went back and watched it again, and cried my eyes out again.

I respect what Bruno Mars tried to do but Andre Cymone is right. Poor Bruno looked like a Vegas lounge act, no disrespect to the Prince tribute bands intended. The only thing that impressed me about it was that he was using Prince's guitar strap.

It was a award show performance not "I'm Prince, buy my new records under the name Bruno Mars"

It wasn't disrespectful to his legacy,

You want Bruno to be a professor of Prince at an awards show? He had no time in the schedule to do what you wanted. It was a Grammy Awards performance not a memoriam or a symposium on the music of Prince. confused

Seeing Andre Cymone´s comment, I understand that dressing as Prince can be seen as disrespectful, because there is only one Prince. I was so happy with an energetic tribute without ´Purple Rain´ and ´Nothing compares´ that I didnt see this other side. Anyway, I still like it.

Agreed. It's as if they only see him through the lens of 1984 and nothing else. It's a shame because his body of work is incredible and we'll never have another artist like that ever again.

Agree 100% with Andre Cymone. But I also think Bruno Mars is an embarrassing and awkward pop music person and I really don't understand why he was there to begin with.

A fitting tribute would be to have all the different bands he had each play a song they were involved with so it wouldn't just be some Purple Rain Karaoke fest.

how cool would it be to have his Dirty Mind era band play When U Were Mine and then have the Revolution play something from there time with Prince etc. and then end with 3rd Eye Girl playing something from his last album. That would all probably take too long but still 5 minutes of that would not be as ill fitting as that awkward outfit Bruno Mars wore.

Nah, he played it. Either that, or he did a perfect job hitting the frets that someone else was playing.

When they say it took "months" to plan this, I suspect that much of that time was devoted to Bruno Mars getting the guitar parts down. I know he can play the guitar, but I don't think he could have played LGC without a lot of practice.

The real problem is that this wasn't a real tribute.

As with many tributes, I was expecting more participation from contemporaries and more than 3 half-songs.

The Time -- who I always like to see on stage -- wasn't enough.

Bruno couldn't win, but he was a real pro and gave it his all.

Seemed like a rushed, karaoke-on-steroids sendoff for one of greatest artists of the last 2 generations.

(PS -- Bruno . . . playing "Let's Go Crazy" without a single female bandmember in sight was ironic.)
