This is still one of my favorite tributes. NPG Hornz player BK Jackson doing Purple Rain at the FAMU 2016 graduation ceremony. He goes all out.

Bruno is a talented guy with a solid band and good energy on stage. It was an ok performance, nothing to write home about. I got the impression he wasn't really into doing it. He might have been pushed into it by the powers that be.

Wasn't a trbute, the more I think, the more I see! The execs pull a few back handers to get The Time a slot, and let's face it, most of the general public aint got a clue who they are, but Mr record exec (and The Time) knows it's probably the big payday very soon, milking all this purple rain re-release stuff, so they Also need a high profile monkey. That's where Bruno comes in, probably the highest profile willing, so at least all the kids will have an idea, and possibly he even thought he could get a few new fans on the way.
A few moving or meaningful words wouldn't have gone amiss from Morris or Jerome, but nothing.

It would have interviews with people who recorded songs he wrote for them. It would emphasize the innovation and versatility of his catalogue. It would end with the worldwide tributes to his death.

THEN if I were to follow up with a performance of Let's Go Crazy I wouldn't be foolish enough to have Jesse Johnson in the building and NOT have him play the guitar parts!

The two best award show tributes I've seen to Prince were: (1) the 1990 AMAs, which closely followed your format along with interviews of his peers, and (2) Prince's own set at his RRHOF induction.

The BET tribute was the best of the last year.

It's hardly bloody difficult to at least get it that bit right. How did that never get discussed?

I enjoyed Bruno's performance, and was glad he did one killer song instead of a medley like Gaga's Bowie thing last year. That said, wearing the purple suit and signature guitar was a bit cheeky. But I thought it was as good as anything I'd have expected. The Time just came out there and killed it - I'll go see them when they come around LA again.

Somehow I'd forgotten Let's Go Crazy is partly about death... maybe I've heard too many live version that leave out the 2nd verse. But that was especially poignant.

Still, A Tribe Called Quest had the best performance of the night. Heavy.

Because unfortunately, the average Grammy viewer wouldn't know Jesse Johnson from a can of blue paint. They'll at least be familiar with Bruno Mars, and Morris and Jerome (who may be the only 2 members of The Time that matter to the average Grammy viewer). That's all they care about

But I agree, the staging of the show felt almost like Halloween.

I understand how Bruno's performance could be so polarazing to everyone here.

But for me personally, it was one of the few times I have had something make me smile about remembering Prince since his passing.

If you had no idea who Prince was, you would not have known that was a "tribute" to him. THAT was my biggest issue.

Bruno did a fine job trying to approximate what the real genius was capable of. Yes, he should have worn his own look, not Prince's. No, the solo wasn't nearly as technical as Prince's. Vocals were a little shaky. However...

Here's the real point... What if just one of Bruno's millions of young fans is inspired to delve into Prince's catalog becuase he/she sees that their guy (Bruno) co-signs our guy (Prince)? Maybe more kids will pick up an instrument as a result of seeing Bruno actually play. I've been trying to evangelize Prince to my teenagers for years. The best way to win them over is if someone they think is cool (Bruno) thinks Prince is cool.

For me, the exposure to young audiences who have no idea what they missed, make this and other tributes totally worth it.
