If I'm following this: Bruno's playing and performance wasn't up to Prince standards and he looked ridiculous but he's the best we're going to get so we should encourage it.

Does this sum it up?

Yeah, I'm not celebrating mediocrity in the name of effort even if it were true that this is the best anyone can do. That "performance" was horrible.

A THOUSAND TIMES YES to this...

For this reason ALONE Bruno was a great Choice...No matter what we may think..

He IS the SHIZZLE to this current generation...

I think that most of us can agree that the music industry is primarily an "industry" in that they are just concerned with categorizing and packaging a product to deliver to consumers. They had no idea how to promote an ever changing musical genius and still don't. Unfortunately commercial TV would never be able to explore that depth. That is the cross we have to bear!

I was okay with the choice of Bruno Mars for the performance strictly from the POV that this may encourage this generation to broaden their musical horizons. Mr. Mars is young, seems to be level-headed and doesn't seem to suffer from an enlarged ego. I imagine he is not done with his musical journey and hope he can encourage millenials to explore.

We all know there will never be another Prince. There have been some younglings on the org who are just now finding Prince and his predecessors. We do need to encourange that.

Wouldn't you say the Grammys is the pinnacle of mediocrity? Top 40 watered down pablum? For you it must have seemed like tasting MD 20/20 when you have the pallate for Chateau Margaux 1787. bored2

I understand what you are saying, but he picked the wrong song, wrong person and wrong way to try out his chops.

First, if you didn't know who Prince was, you would have thought - hey Bruno has a new song out. Nothing about what he did said tribute.

Second, if you know the song LGC...his guitar at the end was awful compared to the actually work. He reached above his level too soon.

I think Bruno is talented and with time will go far if he stays dedicated to the craft, but in truth, that was an awful tribute because it was not a tribute, it was someone playing dress up as Prince, and if you had no idea who Prince was, it was Bruno dressed in purple playng the guitar.

NOTHING about it even honored Prince at all, which is what it was supposed to be about. PRINCE not Bruno Mars.

I understand what you are saying too, but Prince's voice in the intro and the universally recognizable symbol wasnt a clue?

Again, that was not the point we were making. We have already said that Bruno's visuals were awkward because he veered of into inpersonation, but unless you get Santana himself to do it, or Mint Condition or Jesse Johnson, it's not likely to be something that would satisfy orgers.

That is a given and I get it.

The point we were making is that the Grammys are not about pleasing org members. They have a whole nother agenda. For example, people forget that the Grammys have been doing this pairing of old and new acts every single year for over a decade, so if somebody thought they were going to change that format for Prince, they were setting themselves up to be disappointed.

They specifically wanted a very young, mainstream male artist and I would not have wanted to see Miguel or Weeknd or Drake or Chris Brown up there. lol

People seem to be forgetting that Prince himself performed on the same stage with Beyonce of all people.

The tribute to Bowie was similarly flawed and nobody said a word about that.

It was good for what it was, I like it but I can see why it did not cut it for others. I did not have high expections for the tribute. These people can't sing and perform like the originals so I don't expect anything special and beyond.

Yep, I remember the year they let Christina Aguilera do James Brown's tribute so I don't know what all pearl clutching is about because this is nothing new. lol

Little Janelle Monae was dressed like Prince at the BET tribute too and she was good.

My beef with Madge was mainly about the demonic energy surrounding the performance.

Yeah, it is nothing new. I don't understand the thought process when it comes to some these award show tributes but it is what it is. As for Madge she is vet and could have done better, she tours and I am sure she has great musicans that could have work out a better arrangement than a cold backtrack. I have never seen anyone do a tribute with a graveyard in the background, I don't understand the thought procsss.....these award show are about ratings.

I thought this was cleared up, as AVENUEMAN stated the name on the headstock of the guitar was not the same as Prince's cloud. Was it or wasn't it Prince's actual guitar?!?? IF it WAS, I'm with you! NO ONE, besides maybe Santana would have the blessing of Prince's fans to even think about touching that guitar and even THINK about so much as striking a chord on it mad

Wow so much hate and bitterness being displayed on here!

At the end of the day nobody can replace Prince and nobody is trying. This was a tribute, nothing more nothing less. It was a way for people to say we loved you and will miss you Prince.

I thought it was OK! Not great but not awful either. It was ok! And it was cool The Time were part of it (man they are looking old).
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

yeahthat It's all about encouraging the younger generation to embrace Prince. Bruno Mars is one of the most popular musicians right now. He helps expose the younger generation to Prince.

He let Ron Wood play the blue cloud onstage years ago. But I can't imagine he'd let many people touch his guitars.

And I thought Bruno paid tribute to Prince with class and style. Bruno put his own spin on the purple suit. Bruno was incredibly entertaining with his performance of Let's Go Crazy. I was dancing for almost the entire performance. The tribute was heartfelt. He'll never be Prince, but I thought the performance was great.

IMO, the shortcomings of the tribute are more on the Grammys, not Bruno. Bruno did the best he could, and he's a talented entertainer in his own right. He actually surprised me that he could play at the level he did.

But I have to put the problems on the producers.

Like I said....this msucian would crush Mars:

cool I totally agree that Judith would have been the right person for a Prince tribute at the Grammys. She delivers soulful performances which is a big part of what Prince was all about (the soul). Prince was genuine and honest with his work, which seems to make Bruno look bland and sound like a clanging brass monkey in comparison. He sure knows how to make some noise... but he sadly lacks the depth.

I love her performance of The Cross here. Again she sings with all her heart, hence the wobbly emotional voice at the start, but the way she (and Donna) then takes this song all the way to church (literally!) just gives me the shivers and that even despite the poor sound!

How could someone whose performance failed to represent even a vague peek into Prince's musical depth manage to achieve the broadening of young generations 'musical horizons'? If that had been the real objective, why not simply continue putting forward the very people whom Prince already appreciated and championed, not just some shallow commercial dude who started his career as an Elvis impersonator!
