Reminiscing

This is mainly for the old skool fans but remember the times when new singles would come out before the album? The excitement. The rush of blood to the head? When the DJ on the radio would hype up the EXCLUSIVE new single was going to play during his show. When TV shows had the NEW video? ? The buzz of playing the new single. Desperate for it to finish so you can hurry and listen to the B-side to get a feel for the new album or just savouring every moment and knowing you would remember this moment forever. Remember being glued to the radio, glued to the TV and rushing to the local record shop to get your hands on the album

Or how about the cool rush when that cool slick white envelope would drop on the doorstep - inside the glossy pictures of Prince and articles that you read from cover to cover, again and again. Controversy.

And going to Woolworths/HMV to flick through the posters they had. To check if any new one's were out that you could buy or that would fit the little space you had on those bedroom walls. Those NPG stores we could go to and to just smell and look.

But that was then. . This is now . . .

What is now?

Well since four months ago - nothing. An online store where you can purchase some music, some miscellaneous items including a calendar. No information about anything. Just some unofficial sites where like-minded people can reminisce, discuss theories on the man's music and debate.

What a life.

Yes!

I remember all that stuff you mentioned so fondly...

Hearing MTV advertise an upcoming premiere of a new Prince video, and counting the days until that premiere date arrived..then sitting there waitingwaitingwaiting in anticipation for it to start, taping it, then watching it over and over again and discussing every little nuance of it with your friends.

Knowing Prince was to be a scheduled performer on an awards show or something, and counting the days until THAT was on (repeat all the following from the above paragraph. biggrin)

Visiting the record store on a weekly (or more..) basis to scour the entire store for absolutely ANYTHING Prince related..buttons, posters, songbooks, 45s, 12"s, picture discs, tshirts, magazines with articles or insert posters about him or any of his side projects. The guys in one of my town's independant record stores knew me and my friends by sight and of our Prince fanaticism, and would sometimes save promo stuff for us that the store would receive and give it to us for free.

Hearing a new Prince song on the radio when you weren't expecting it was an INCREDIBLE thing. All of a sudden it would come on and you'd be in this wonderful excitement mode, freaking out that a new song was out and feeling the anticipation of a new album just around the corner.

I realize that that nowadays many things are changed for the better since those days of long ago, but in other ways I miss those old, simple days a lot. There was something so magical and special about them, and it wasn't merely due to Prince being more popular or visible.

Sigh. I'm just thankful I was able to experience all that I did back then, just as I am glad I am experiencing NOW, as well. Someday we will all be reminiscing about now, too...

lovebizzare

yes, I remember, very fondly.

I remember saving up my allowance for about 2 weeks and hurrying to local record store to buy ANYTHING that had to do with Prince.

Begging my mom to get me a trench coat. Getting every poster, pin, picture possible. Buying any maazine that had him in it and cutting out the pictures and taping them on my binder.

Watching mtv and friday night videos until it was my bedtime to see his videos.
Seeing him perform on solid gold, and being glued to the tv screen.
Taping everything that came on about him.

sigh well, those days are gone now. oh well.
