I know that Dirty Mind is the most hellafied funk bomb; I know that 1999 is studio wizardry at its most daring and awe-inspiring; I know that Purple Rain is at the cutting edge of pop; I know that Parade is artistic beauty personified; I know that Sign 'O' The Times is everything we want in Prince; and I know that Lovesexy is both a spiritual and musical revelation...

In spite of ALL this knowledge, the albums I most relate to (and in their entirity) are Controversy, Around The World In A Day and Graffiti Bridge. I absolutely love these three albums with all my heart, and more so than any of the accepted classics mentioned above. I know there must be something wrong with me, but I just don't know what. I'm not even sure if this is starting to get me down but it probably is, otherwise I wouldn't be posting.

Does anyone have any idea why I am so 'left of centre' in my passion for Prince's music? Someone please help me...

You are suffering from Prince fatigue, when you've heard the classics too much and get bored of them, and seek solice in the transitional albums.

I mean, Controversy, ATWIAD and GB all have links between the albums that precede and follow them, but (IMHO) aren't as cohesive or bold statements as the albums that sandwich them. So maybe you are bored of his bold statements and prefer the questing period of how he got there??

So Controversy builds on the funk of DM, Head and the quirkiness of Sister, and adds the cold electronic element that is fully developed and explored on 1999.

ATWIAD has the same reversed echo-ey drums of the PR album, and the funk of Baby I'm a Star and IWD4U is there in America and Tambourine, while it develops the kookiness of Parade in ATWIAD, PP and Temptation.

GB has the "solo Prince" genius of JIR, TQoU, TitT, and brings in the band for NPG, and incorporates the rap and hip hop elements in R&R and NPG that develop in D&P.

In each one you can hear him finding his way to the next sound, without being necessarily sure-footed or confident. Maybe he needs to know what doesn't work before he finds what does, and runs with that.

Anyway, good post, never thought about those three albums in this way before, so thanks for the stimulus.

Wonder if this theory holds up for later career? I'd say C&D is the sound of the live NPG sound having run its course and sounding tired, but doesn't hint at Emancipation - maybe the production on TMBGITW and Eye Hate U remixes point the way there. However, TRC came out of the left field.

I Respect where you are Coming from&if it works for you than Cool.interesting choices because they Follow after Prince made a Statement Album.

Well, you just said you love three Prince albums "with all your heart and soul." And one of them is not Rave. You will live long and prosper!

Weird??... I'd rather listen to 90's Prince than 80's Prince...suffering from MAJOR Prince fatigue.

Nothing wrong with it at all, Anji. Everyone has their own unique taste. I love the "Rave" album a lot!

i never really question why i like what i like in terms of whether it's right/wrong, weird/normal, off center/middle of the road, or what have you. i like some things that are popular, and a lot of things that aren't, and i don't let either it's popularity, or lack there of, sway my attraction to it.

i will queston why i like something in terms of what quality in that thing attracts me.

i really like the controversy album. it is definitely one of my favorites, definitely in my top 5 prince albums in fact. it contains some of the all time classic prince tunes.

i also, like graffiti bridge a lot, it, however, wouldn't be in the top 5, but, it would be in the top half, if i ranked favorites in order.

i tend to judge an album by the presence of its positive qualities, rather than the presence of its negative qualities. by that i mean, some people rank an album like diamonds and pearls low on their list because it has crappy songs like jughead, that are kind of embarassing. they would argue that any album with stuff like that on it sucks.

but, i rank diamonds and pearls fairly high, because it has gett off, other other killer songson it and am able to sort of ignore the ones i don't like. i do the same with a piece like emancipation. how many times have i seen people rag that set out because it would of been a great single or double disc, when the same good songs would be present on their "great version" of the album.

anyway, you may in fact be weird, but not just because you like controversy, around the world in a day, and graffiti bridge. enjoy what you like!
