The Good Life UK Maxi single

This track has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine so I dug out the Maxi single which admittedly I haven't listened to in some time.

.

I love it! The Big City remix is like a completely different song and the other mixes are superb in my opinion!

.

On the US Maxi single version there is also a banging club mix version of Get Wild.

.

Admittedly this was quite a challenging period to be a Prince fan but there sure was some funky music made in this era....

.

Show some love!

Test it goes 1, 2...

What a great gem on this maxi single. Loved it then and now. Could have easily been a track on Exodus.

I'm only speaking the truth. Ain't the first time Prince references balls. "Get Off" had it in the chorus. haha

I don't disagree that you can hear it that way if you like...but in context with "checkin' the mic 1, 2" I'll stick to my belief that he does not make a ball reference here.

"Get Off" (with one T) though - yeah, balls.

Why would you say that? eek

Oppositely, I found 1994-1995 to be among the most exciting era, if not THE most exciting era of my now 27 years being a fan.

Maybe challenging from the standpoint of the public perception that Prince had lost it completely, and how silly the name change looked to those who didn't follow him closely...that could make it tough for fans who were also ridiculed and teased. You had to be comfortable being above all of that. But musically - definitely one of a few golden eras of Prince music.

As far as I was concerned Prince was already the subject of much hate before the name change. I couldn't help it if people were being narrow minded and I didn't really care if they gave me shit about Prince because I knew I had taste, that they were just plain dumb and that History would make me right (and hell, when you see all the praises Prince has gotten those last 12 years, let alone since he's passed, it sure did!).

.

I adored that whole adventure, as the 16-18 y.o. teenager that I was, Prince's daring moves gave me a lot of inspiration: "dying" as Prince, changing his name to a symbol, getting at war with his all-powerful record company (of course at the time I didn't know that WB was of more good faith than Prince made them look to be, and that Prince was giving them a lot of shit), touring small clubs with a setlist of only new and previously unreleased material, writing slave on his cheek, reducing his band's sound to a barebone cyberfuturepunkfunk esthetic, the revolutionary use of the samples llive, the lollipop thing at AMA 95, the prophetic internet thing from the TBE video, releasing his music independently... Add to that the clothes, the style, the mystical trip, the whole outrageous daring aspect of the whole and the brilliant new output of music!

.

I felt, with all the overenthusiasm you can have at that age, that I was witnessing and being part of an extraordinary adventure. And Prince's stubborness in doing shit that no one expected him to do, that was going against every convention and pissing off half the world was for me a primary example of what to do with my future life and career.

Love the Big City remix.

And it was going to be on Newpower Soul until the last moment, which is why the tracklisting is wrong on the first press of the CD, and P mentions the song in his "name all the songs on the album in order" rap that he occasionally did.

Eventually they did but from every account I know of how things occured, Prince clearly opened the hostilities. WB had been extremely supportive of Prince for 15 years, and particularly in 1991-1992. There had been certain times when WB had said no to Prince earlier, or had asked him to do a few changes on certain side projects, and I'm not saying they were right from my perspective as a fan and as an artist (saying no to Crystal Ball remains a major mistake IMHO), but most of the time they were very supportive and extremely patient. It's only natural, when P blew-up to their face and began bashing them publicly, that they'd end-up retaliating. Scififilmnerd's "ultimate" threads give a pretty detailed account on how things happened from early 1993 to late 1996. http://prince.org/msg/7/317254

I know the good life is mentioned during the rap on New Power Soul and some of the artwork but it's the first I've heard that the Big City remix was going to be on NPS
.
Edit - just looked on PVault and says so too. I'll always associate it with Exodus

I don't disagree that you can hear it that way if you like...but in context with "checkin' the mic 1, 2" I'll stick to my belief that he does not make a ball reference here. "Get Off" (with one T) though - yeah, balls.

"Test it goes" makes no sense, though. Most men have two balls, so counting testicles and being raunchy (which the first 2 NPG albums were more than some Prince material) makes more sense. You can hear the hard C in testiCles clearly, IMO.

And it wasn't even a new joke, so I think it's the established, adolescent humor (which, let's face it, is consistent with what's happening elsewhere in the NPG at the time), and I'm almost certain that it isn't "test it goes" (something new that's nonsensical).

Definitely remember him saying "testicles" and it wouldn't be the first time I heard that joke in a sound studio setting!

But wait, "Get Off? Oh the NPG 12" remix stuff? Like the getting a physical part?

What I sayz is it's easy to reconfigurate the album's original configuration and see how it flows, since we have the missing track.

The Big City mix was slightly updated for NPS but still really funky, had some new lyrics and Doug E Fresh was on it.

And yes it is "testicles 1, 2"

The recording sounds to me like "Tester goes", and if Prince ever said/sang "Testicles" elsewhere I think he got it from you or whomever on prince org.

Something I'd like to hear. Guessing there's probably quite a lot of unreleased Prince solo material from 98. I think the Madrid 2 Chicago album was recorded that year as well. And we never did hear the full version of Funk Radio.
