Seeking Santana Quote about Prince * Is anyone familiar with the following quote by Santana: "Prince has to do a strip tease to get noticed. He is one of the best musicians that America has ever produced, and he has to resort to a strip tease to get noticed"? It was on a documentary and not in any book or magazine. At least, I saw Santana say it in a documentary, but I can't remember the name of the documentary or even the year. For some reason, I think it was on something done by MTV or VH1, but it's been so long ago that I can remember. At first I thought it was in one of the films that form Omnibus' Prince Rogers Nelson (The Prince of Paisley Park, Prince: A Musical Portrait, and Prince: Behind the Beat), but I have The Magnoli Files, and it's not on any of those films. If anyone remembers the documentary in which this was stated, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't remember him saying that but he made some other snarky remarks but I guess he got over it later.

I am not sure that Santana was insulting prince. I think he was making a point about the nature of the industry--that amazing musical ability isn't always enough. He called him a great musician. Actually, later day Prince might actually agree with Santana about younger Prince.
BTW, if Prince felt that he needed to do a strip tease, then very very very fine with me.

To this day, I have NEVER heard any snarky remarks from Carlos Santana when it comes to Prince. Nothing but praise and admiration and respect, which is remarkable when you consider that he was one of Prince´s biggest heroes and involved in a relationship with Sheila E. before she started working and hanging out with Prince. The only negative episode between Prince and Carlos Santana that I have read of was that one time during the making of Prince´s first or second album when they paid Carlos a visit and Prince refused to take off his boots. Reminded me a bit of that scene in Donnie Brasco where Donnie refuses to take off his boots in that Japanese restaurant because he is bugged, and then he reacts VERY hostile and violent toward the waiter. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I also listened to an earlier podcast from last year were Andre said Prince did not take off his boots at Santana house because a jam session was going on and if Prince took off his off boots he would not be able to see the musicians.

* Yes, Purplerabbithole, iirc, Santana was complimenting Prince while also denouncing the music industry because, often, things other than talent can be used to ignore a talent or promote a talent and that, because of this, Prince was not getting what Santana saw as a just appreciation of his talents.
