Dealing with friends/relatives that aren't into prince

So I know I'm a true Prince fam, but at the same time it shocks me when others aren't as admiring of Prince.

Case in point: I've been visiting home and tried watching the SOTT movie with my mother who was a passing fan of his most popular '80s hits. She totally didn't get into it and we didn't even get halfway through before she was bored and we stopped watching. sad broken She said that she didn't know the songs and was really just a fan of his hits. I ADORE THAT MOVIE. This was like a stab to the heart.

I know I am being SUPER sensitive but it really hurts when loved ones (my mother, my fiance, etc) don't at least try to indulge me in my interest. It makes me feel very alone in my admiration (I have no other friend or family to talk to him about, aside from y'all here, which I'm of course very thankful for heart). I don't know what I'd do without the org. heart

I know I probably sound absolutely ridiculous as I can't expect other people to necessarily feel the same way I do about him, but it still really hurts. I apologize for this entire post but I felt the need to talk to someone about it. I hope you guys don't think I'm too ridiculous. Do any of you guys have any advice or personal anecdotes?

Admission is easy, just say you believe and come to this place in your heart... <3

I don't care if others i know don't get Prince. I don't get some of my friends music tastes. I tried to get into my friends/families fav music like MJ ,REM ,The Beatles, Iron Maiden just to name a few. They just don't do anything for me which is fine and if Prince does nothing for them that is fine too. Don't take it personal is my advice biggrin My brother once played a Beatles concert i walked out of the room after the second song i don't think he took it to heart. My mum loved Prince to and my sister but my brother does not and he used to walk out of room when i put Prince on the TV i just used to laugh and turn it up. cool

I am the only Prince fan I know (besides my friends on the Org) and I am OK with that. What I do hate is when people call themselves "fans" and are stuck on just the few 80s hits. To me that is not a fan - I like a few Beatles songs but never claim to be a fan even though I admire them as a group. It is hard being the only fan, but the thing is, it doesnt matter and you cannot force people to like what you like. We KNOW he is (still cant say was) the best and I quietly indulge in my admiration. The only thing I find hard is that when I may like to watch somethig on the TV on the big screen it can be hard as others want to watch something else. Dont worry, enjoy it and just be happy you have excellent taste in music biggrin

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

What difference does it make if your friends or family have the same taste in music as you?
Is this some kind of validation thing? I don't get it at all. The last thing that comes in to play in my appreciation of music is the opinion of others. It's simply irrelevent.

Back in high school (80s) most of my friends started liking Prince with Little Red Corvette and stopped liking him after Raspberry Beret, and my family didn't like him at all. If I gave a shit what they thought I might not be here today.
wink cool music

I can certainly understand the frustration. We would like to share and communicate the same passion we have.
But getting to know Prince's work takes time. Lots of.

Leonard Cohen said it all in Hallelujah:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?

In yo Mama's defence, SOTT is not the most accessible album.
The SOTT live arrangements are complex, on the verge of Jazz.
I can understand how people used to the usual FM pop can feel left standing at the altar.

You should put it all upside down, and be proud
that you get something important from music and Prince.
Pity the vast majority fools that think music is just sonic tapestry for malls.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

I'm shocked by atrocities I see on the news. I'm shocked Trump is now president of the U.S. life can be brutal. Try to keep a perspective and not judge people for not liking Prince. Forgive your mother, just because she didn't want to watch SOTT. Love Prince for yourself not for other people.
Baby, you're a star.

And yes I have a personal experience with this too.

My mother's cousin came to visit. He's an active drinker which doesn't bother but me much but he's also not always kind to me.
I talked about Prince at the supper table and when he saw that I loved Prince he said, "Yeah, but he died of a drug overdose."
That's all he had to say.
This was in the summer when everything was still very fresh and I noticed he watched my face & body language to see if I would react. I didn't say anything.

In hindsight, I wish I had said, "At least he wasn't a miserable person."

Everyone knows about my being a P fan. They don't get it. They don't get him. They love me but they don't get me.

It's been nearly 40 years of them not getting it.

Funny thing is, I get them.

Whatever.

Sometimes I discuss P with them, sometimes I don't.

It wasn't a mistake to share what is in your heart. I totally get your point. Just ignore the naysayers. This is a tough crowd. My advice: Take the empathetic responses and leave the toxic, insensitive ones on the table.

Your feelings are like most of us who truly loved him. I remember as a teenager in school always being considered kinda out there for liking everything this man created and also what's funny about being a Prince fan is watching how quickly he was "cool"one minute and considered strange the next.My family are Prince fans because of me. the many hours i spent playing his music around the house turned them on to this genius of a man.I smile when I play unreleased tracks and my sisters knows them too.

Oh, the other thing I noticed is that just the mention of Prince's name makes some people uncomfortable because they aren't in touch with their sexual nature.

I guess I can honestly say that I've been rather blessed in this particular aspect of my Prince fandom. With the exception of my mother, who didn't get nor like Prince at all...the people that I love may not have been as into Prince as I am but they did appreciate his many talents enough for them and more often than not...understood, supported and encouraged my Prince indulgences.

They were the ones that stopped whatever they were doing the moment they heard what happened on that dark and cold day this past April, to reach out to me in every way they could to make sure that I would be okay because they KNEW that I was hurting and in severe pain. touched

So they NEVER have to enjoy the SOTT movie or dance the Dance Electric with me. Just loving and caring for me, is enough. I sincerely hope you get to experience that too! heart hug

Some were touching, others were humourous, all interesting to me. I guess this has been such a serious and upsetting week to many people that it just wasn't received as universally well as the previous thread was. Persoanlly, I need a break from all the gravity and this type of thread provides that.

Aw gandorb thank you! I think it's something that is interesting to talk about especially in light of all the grief we're still experiencing. It's helpful to have someone to talk to about Prince and celebrate him with and not just deal with it all alone.

I find it difficult - if not impossible - to stop caring what other people think. There have been countless people in my life that I couldn't/can't understand how they fail to recognize Prince's genius.

.

You know what happened, on April 21 this year I (like probably of lot of folks) just didn't want to talk to anyone about anything. Family and friends were texting me since the new broke early that day. I was just not up to even responding.

.

Late that day, I get a phone call from my dad. I rarely hear from him, so I figure he's probably calling to talk about the news of Prince's passing. Well it wasn't, he called about some other B.S. entirely and I just kind of gave 'yes' and 'no' answers because I wanted to get off the phone. Then he's like, "What's the matter, you seem kind of down."

.

I mean, I know my dad always detested Prince but damn, that was a cold thing to say. I mumbled something about being depressed that Prince was gone (remember, this was the DAY it happened). And there was just silence.

.

Then he's like, "Oh yeah, well Kennedy is devoting her show tonight to him and Clay Aiken will be on as a guest. I'll DVR it for you."

As long as make other people our Source (they're not), we will always care about what they think.
Sounds like your dad was stuck in self that day but at least he had a little compassion when you reminded him that you were there too, with feelings. That's the best they can do.
