The part I think he pushed the hardest on was her 'image' and stage persona. I'll locate the interview where she was talking about him making her study a female entertainer from the 60s/70s

I thought after reading it, that it was a bad move, that that was not who Andy seemed to be...

I think I remember reading an interview where she said he was having her watch concert footage of Betty Mabry Davis. That seemed to be the image Prince was going for and the one he introduced on the Welcome 2 Europe tour. Even then,Andy looked more comfortable in beautiful dresses, strumming her acoustic. It was strange that Prince decided to make her his lead funk guitarist when she said in an interview she never even played an electric guitar until then.I get that Prince wanted to spend time with her but he could have still had her sing back up,duet with him as well as play a few acoustic songs. I felt bad for her in that respect.

Yes that is it. It wasn't her natural fit. She could have worked still as who she was, because Prince still made music that could be similar to hers. A different style protege

Indeed. No other protegé that I'm aware of would have ever dared to go around Prince and release her own record that he had produced.

ingrid chavez went behind his back to finish her record without him at paisley park with micheal koppleman. prince through a fit and tried to shelve it so she went to warner bros herself to get it released bcos WB and PP were fighting about how to proceed with their partnership. the carmen electra project was not playing well in the offcies but prince kept pushing for it. WB thought IC's record had more appeal after the madonna release of 'justify my love'.

--

jill, rosie and vanity all stepped away from prince andmade their own deals without him. jill and vanity left high and dry and never went back. rosie left for motown, too but that didn't work out to plan either. in some part because prince wouldn't let her out of her contract-even while he was fighting with WB about not lettting him of of his.

--

u seem kinda new to all of this. are u just here to cheer AA on? nothing wrong with that if u are but it's always better to take a broader view. there are plenty of articles on the org and in print elsewhere to look into. wink

[Edited 11/21/16 8:43am]

My point is that she did it independently. And, that's not to down the other ladies, all of whom I admire. I'm just making the point that Andy stepped out, without the backing of a label.

Prince said Andy put Superconductor herself.Without a label backing her does that mean she was the one who set the distribution deal up with Amazon herself? I know around that time she was telling everyone on her Facebook she was working on something and to be patient. I remember Ledisi giving a release date and it being pushed back. Also the original packaging for Superconductor was completely different than what it ended up being. I always did wonder what happened there.

This is a Prince and Andy thread, so of course it's going to be pro Andy. There are other threads to elevate the other ladies in his life.

Yeah she seemed very uncomfortable and forced. She went along with it for her European summer tour but by the time she came back at the end of the year she had pretty much gone back to her more relaxed natural style.

To Prince's credit, he made a course correction and recorded the acoustic album with Andy, and he put it out on Tidal for 12 hours in November (five months before his passing), the equivalent of "leaking" her album; otherwise, it might have never been released by the estate (or if so, God only knows when). Also, in retrospect, I'll bet that Andy is thankful for that crash course in the electric guitar. She gained a lifetime of experience during those few years with Prince.

That's true. Her rythmn guitar playing had vastly improved by 2013 too. She quit playing the White Gretsch that I read Prince gifted her with and opted for a much lighter Nik Huber too.She said the Gretsch was too heavy. Another thing I wondered about was when Superconductor came out Prince had Adrian Crutchfield put together a horn section for her as well as loaning her Cassandra O'Neal,Andrew Gouche and Mike Scott. By the time she played SXSW in March 2013 she had her own band. She said in an interview with Joe Kelly Prince took her band away from her and decided he wanted the horns for himself.I wonder if she had to go out and hire a whole new band herself and if that was a why there seemed to be a rift after that between them for a little while.

Yeah,it would be nice if Andy would do another chat and clear some things up. Also in December 2012 she said the next video for Superconductor would be Yellow Gold and she asked for opinions on how it should play out then never mentioned it again. Maybe Prince was losing interest in the project and was focusing more on 3rdeyegirl so Andy just dropped it.

Been a couple hundred hours since he got your call
You use to treat me like David, but now I feel like Saul
Been making it rain all around the world
What difference does it make when the boy ain't got his girl?

This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like
(This is what it feels like, babe)
This is what it feels like, babe
(This is what it feels like)
This is what it feels like
(This is what it feels like, babe)

Your name's not David and it sure ain't Saul
Maybe you have no business writing on my wall
Springtime on the Philistines before the middle of the fall (Middle of the fall)
Silly rabbit needs to stop doin' tricks if you wanna get my call

This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like
(Oh oh) This is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like, babe
Oh this is what it feels like
Oh this is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like, babe

Everybody goes up and down in a lifetime love affair
Makin' up, just breakin' up and pullin' each other's hair
What I wouldn't give to have you right here next to me
Show you want I really feel about you, well listen and you will see

This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like yeah, yeah
This is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like, babe

The art of seduction, you and me is the right equation
And all you need to reach my lovin' is why I stared down a muffin
I can't wait to be your baby, baby, here I am just take me

This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like, baby
This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like, babe
This is what it feels like
This is what it feels like, babe

Art Official Age album artwork

What It Feels Like is the eighth track on Prince's 37th album Art Official Age. Almost 15 months before its release, however, the track was streamed during a DJ set by Dudley D. on 11 July 2013 (am), during 3rdEye TV broadcast # 16. The track is a duet between Prince and Andy Allo.

Initial tracking dates are unknown, but it is likely the track was recorded between Summer 2011 and early 2012 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, during recording sessions for Andy Allo's second album Superconductor.

The track's lyrics make reference to the Biblical figures David and Saul. Although the phrase "this is what it feels like" is used repeatedly in When Stars Collide, which did end up on Superconductor, the tracks are otherwise unrelated.

[INTERVIEW] Andy Allo:
Prince's Protégé Comes Into Her Own

The Singer-Guitarist Hits All The Right Chords With Upcoming CD Superconductor

by Margena A. Christian, October 22, 2012

[INTERVIEW] Andy Allo: Prince’s Protégé Comes Into Her Own

Some people are easy on both the eyes and ears. Andy Allo is one such person. You might remember her as Tee Tee’s girlfriend on BET’s The Game. Or her flawless face is familiar from a Clean & Clear or Kohl’s commercial. Perhaps you saw the singer/songwriter/guitarist perform on The Africa Channel in 2010. You probably immediately vibed with the then-indie artist’s alternative, hip hop and soul sound. But if you’re an ardent Prince fan, you’ll know Allo’s voice from the revamped version of “ExtraLovable” and that she’s a guitarist with the Grammy and Oscar-wining icon’s band New Power Generation (NPG). Last month, she hit the Windy City during Prince’s three night "Welcome 2 Chicago" residency at the United Center and kicked things off at the House of Blues with her own listening party for the upcoming CD Superconductor. Allo’s voice is unmistakably sultry and sweet with a soulful, jazzy edge. Add her guitar playing to the mix and you’ve got the total package here. EBONY caught up with Allo to talk making music, working with His Royal Badness and more. Read more...

Interesting. I read somewhere that Prince, in a very gentleman-like fashion, used to help her put on and take off her guitar. Perhaps this explains why; although, it might have just been the gentleman in him.

No,it was a written interview. There were supposed to be two or three parts to it but unfortunatey Dr.Funk never posted them.Part 1 is still up on his website. It was posted in June 2013.

ThNks again for the great information. I did find that but it looked pretty short. I'm surprised that when Funkenberry got an actual interview he didn't make much use of it. Then again he might've been asked not to.

Sure! I think Dr.Funkenberry said Prince requested that he not release the rest of the interview until he released the next album and no more was said about it after that.

I don't want to derail this thread but do want to me that on Funkenberry's website I saw a link for a video from about 2011 where Prince talks about vertigo. Too bad that one was taken off too...the comments on the thread imply it was truly rare.

I read that as well.Someone who was posting here at the time wrote about it in one of the concert reviews. They said a lady in the restroom was talking about it and said she thought he was in love with her after seeing that. Last time I saw that guitar,it was mounted on Andy's wall. He also supposedly gave her a Yellow Fender Strat...a '73. She posted a pic recently that Prince took of her playing it at PP.

Yeah that was a good interview. It was done while on tour in Canada.I was worried when I heard of his vertigo that he might have been pushing himself too hard then. The radio station in Canada that did the interview played some of it on April 21st during their morning show. They put it up on the stations SoundCloud but I can't recall the name of the station right now.

I think they may have meant that Prince had forgotten what he told Dr.Funk about the interview.I agree that Prince hadn't seemed to move on from Andy. He had her on his mind a lot last year and probably this year too. I noticed he was tweeting about her a lot.Last Sept,he tweeted a clip of Mononeon playing the bass to Time with some of Andy's verse. He typed above it Slow Down Time and Count Every Kiss Urself. I thought that was kinda interesting. Also a few days after that he posted a picture of a woman's lips with a chain dangling in front. They looked like hers but kind of hard to tell.Correction on the clip of time...it was him singing I think I really need to make u my pet and put u in my little cage" Also with him pulling out Oui Can Luv and making an event out of it he was definitely still focused on her for some reason.

Speaking of Yellow Gold I recall she posted a photo of her handwritten lyrics to it online. A lot of people on here said P most likely wrote everything on Superconductor but I think most of them were her own songs with him producing

I dont want to derail the thread either. However, I typed in vertigo and one of the links that popped up is Prince Live with CHUM FM Toronto and which mentions the vertigo and hoping the epilepsy is not returning and working on Andy's abum. There is a link, however since I am on a work laptop I can't access to see if the link still works. Sounds like P may have had it bad for Andy. Maybe she broke his heart which broke hers....sorry thinking out loud. Not sure I like the new sound...sounds kinda country westernish to me and perhaps it was the way she sang them. Like the stuff with P and SuperConductor much better.
