Hi all, finally allowed to post after lurking on here for a year so just thought I would introduce myself. It feels great to be here!

Like the other post that was flying around, I'm also a young Prince fan - 20 years old. Despite this I've known and listened to Prince's music almost on a drip feed. It all stated a few yeras back - I've been surrounded by musicians my whole life, and when someone put me on "Sexy MF" years ago I was content with that. For years I only had "Sexy MF" and "Crazy You" in my library because I thought that they were such amazing songs that he couldn't top them. If only I knew how naive I was! A few years later I bought a sealed copy of Madhouse's first record on vinyl, and I vaguely followed his AOA era (because Breakfast Can Wait was my jam) and that's back when his music was on Spotify so I got a deeper understanding of his back catalogue. Not wanting to spoil the experience I decided to come back to it when the time is right.

A few months before his passing I was sick of having "I Wanna Be Your Lover" teasing me for all this time. So I planned to go through them all one by one, see him live and so on - become a real fan. I was making my way through his self-titled when my friend texted me on April 21. From then it's almost turned into an obsession - I instantly bought a few of his CDs (such as the Chaka Khan project), got a Tidal subscription and did a belly-flop dive into his discography. Although I was loving "For You" and "Prince" prior to his passing (despite the average reviews), I wasn't really prepared for how incredible his '80s albums were. For example listening to Let's Go Crazy and 1999 for the first time were overwhelming experiences - so much so that I decided I shouldn't listen to them again until I got the '80s collection on vinyl. Occasionally I cheated (thanks YouTube suggestions) by listening to Erotic City and SOTT on repeat

A few months later and here I am, up every night until 3AM, listening to Prince's '80s output on vinyl. It's been liberating - an honour and blessing to have this music in my life. I can't describe how I felt listening to Purple Rain properly for the first time... He was amazingly talented and has inspired me to pick up yet another instrument - the guitar. Man... I'm sat here staring out of my apartment window, wishing I could be 20 in 1984 rather than 2016! Although it's the rose-tinted glasses effect, it's nice to dream once in a while eh?

Sorry I know this was really long-winded... I left tons of things out, but I felt an urge to share my experiences with his music. It's hard out here for young Prince fans! There aren't many of us. I'm going travelling to Canada next year and have made plans to go to Minneapolis (for obvious reasons), so I thought now would be the appropriate time to join the community and see what it's all about!

That was very cool to read. I can relate to the time you spent knowing you were going to be a Prince fan, but holding off until the time was right (kind of). For me, I had dipped into an album or 4 over the years, but didn't do the 'belly flop' as you put it, into the catalogue until 2012. Its a journey of discovery that keeps on giving and giving. The mainstream albums, lesser-known albums, side projects, protoges, not to mention outtake boots, live boots, audio and video. So, so much he gave.

It's has been a blessing to be a Prince fan for many years, because of the great memories and the live concerts. But I think it is definitaly a trip to discover 'new' music like let's go crazy in 2016! Enjoy it! It must be difficult to decide where to start because there is so much music. What's your favourite song and album? Do you focus on the regular albums or also on outtakes and live concerts?

I am! It's been an amazing experience and has dwarfed my interest in pretty much everyone else right now Honestly it has been difficult to know where to start.. My originial tactic of "For You" right up to HNR 2 is out the window. I'm focusing on the '80s stuff at the moment. I have so many favourites it's crazy (especially right now), it's subject to change... But I'd say it's a tossup between "Take Me With U", "And God Created Woman", "Pop Life", "Strollin'", "My Love is Forever" and "Sign 'O' The Times". I always go back to the 3EG version of "Let's Go Crazy" as well. As far as an album's concerned, either PR or 1999. What about you? Right now my focus is on his regular albums and side projects, and will be for a while I can imagine.. But "Moonbeam Levels" intrigues me, how it has almost this cult status and it's a bootleg - much like The Beach Boys' Smile project. I'll be checking that out when PR Deluxe drops for sure. For me I have definitely had other musical obsessions (my steely dan one went for like two years and is still going to the dismay of almost everyone me), but I don't feel that was a strong as this one, due to both how good princes compositions are and the sheer size of his catalogue. Anyway it's cool that you picked up the guitar because of prince - there's a devoted website to princes tabs I found the other day which is also rad. Yeah it's crazy, I went through the same with Jeff Buckley for example but it's the quantity of amazing music that makes it different. I love Steely Dan too! "Deacon Blues" and "Do it Again" are amazing. I need to get into their discography more at some point.

Aside from Parade I've forced myself to not listen to it until I got the vinyl copies. I'm focusing on PR and 1999 at the moment but want to get ATWIAD and SOTT as soon as possible. What about you?

I only have 1999 on vinyl so far but my turntable is broken lol so I'll have to find more of them when I can

That's flattering, thanks for reading. It's strange, it's honestly been quite emotional for me experiencing it after his passing. It's a relaxing and energising feeling to be able to dim the lights, put on a record and have that sort of organic connection with music. But it also makes me feel disconnected from people my age.. I can't imagine what it would be like in the 80s to have that music everywhere, especially in clubs! When I go out with friends I just don't get that same type of energy from the music.

Think I'm gonna have to add Aja to my playlist. 7 songs makes it accessible enough. You should, thankfully all of the reissues of Prince records are good quality - the 1999 reissue is mastered by Bernie Grundman also. I have the originial pressing however. Sounds way better than the CDs!

Welcome younglings! Your musical taste is admirable. Hopefully Prince will be your touchstone in discovery of different genres because he could funnel all of those influences. May your journey be long and wonderous!

Just reading your post and loving that you came here to share with us. I'm soooo glad you have experienced the wonderment of all that Prince is and was to so many. His music encompasses soooo many emotions and thrills and smiles and just GREATNESS!!! And there is SOOOO much out there for you to listen to and fall in love with!!!!! I love when I hear of our youth speaking of his artistry!! It's so endearing to know that he continues to touch souls!!! My children are older than you are, but they also appreciate Prince's wonderment and it literally brings warmth to my heart to know that some of our younger generation can appreciate our Musical Genius Prince!!
