biggrin biggrin biggrin I LOVE THIS!! All the younger fans are coming out of the woodwork. How much of 90's Prince have you gotten into so far? That's some territory that's still like murky water to me...

Diamonds and Pearls, Love Symbol and Come 2 My House. I agree, it's not as consistent for me yet but some of the tracks are up there with my all-time favourites (as of now). I love the title track on Chaka's
album... great chorus

Welcome to the org! I'm so glad the next generation is getting into Prince too. Let's all try to think of ways for people to discover him just as you did. Once people listen to his genius, it's hard to deny. Just getting them to hear it, that is the hardest part. Wish they would reissue some of his old songs to radio. They could be hit still today. And more airplay on his new songs as well. His music is so timeless! Like nothing else out there...ever.

"Put on your boots Alfred...let's go!"

I just want to say "welcome" and "you've got a long way to go"!!

.

Your post was so refreshing, and honest. IMO you are coming about it/Prince the right way. So many new fans will try to pretend they are long time, die hard fans, and it can be sooo frustrating, when they show how clueless they are with their statements or questions.

.

I was just speaking to a friend last night about Prince's legacy. I would assume soon Elvis' legacy will be gone, as lets face it, his music wasn't really universal and his fan base is most likely dying (literally). I think Prince's music is so unique and diverse that it can still attract the youth. I truly hope there are others in your generation that will get into him to continue the legacy.

.

If I may ask, do you think not being able to find him on youtube, etc. previously hindered him being found/sought out by the youth?

.

Also: what is the impression of Prince in your generation, is he considered "cool"? (back in my youth when I'd wear a P concert tee for example I would get told over and over he was "weird", etc.)

Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

I am trying to. It feels like I have come across a rare mineral (even though he's one of the biggest artists ever!). Trust me the last thing I would be is inauthentic - esepcially when it comes to music. I have a long way to go indeed, and I like it that way!

Unfortunately I believe it absolutely hindered his chances of gaining new, young, millenial fans. But I think he sort of liked it that way - artistry came first and he felt a deep connection with his loyal fans. Where it gets confusing is that he always wished to target young people with his music - look at AOA for example, and Lianne La Havas. Ultimately I believe he did the right thing by removing his music off of streaming services, as they are a terrible deal for artists, but now is the time to upload them again. Almost as a shrine of his greatness, a way to keep him in the ears and hearts of the people. He would want that.. Now he's gone. I think he already is in the hearts and minds of people (hence the signature), but it would certainly help regarding young music fans like myself. Despite how we feel as lovers of both music and artistry, streaming services are a high-speed train that shows no signs of stopping. I wouldn't have found half of my favourite Prince songs if it wasn't for YouTube. I wouldn't be surprised if this new publishing deal puts his music back on streaming services.

To be honest with you many people in my generation don't have an impression of Prince at all - but everyone who does is always complimentary of him. They understand him as a "great" right next to MJ, but aren't familiar with the music outside of Purple Rain, which is weird. I think if I wore a Prince t shirt people would be indifferent. Anyway, "band tees" are a trend now - people are walking around wearing Black Sabbath t shirts even though they've never listened to one of their songs.. I don'tget it either lol

Prince: 1958-infinity. Thank U for everything.

I know exactly what you mean. I've only really known his music for about a year now but occasionally I'll listen to something like reflection or my computer and get all emotional haha it's weird considering he hasn't been a present force through most of my life. The club thing too is so true. Having said that I feel some of his songs would go off in a club, like erotic city or controversy. I don't know what it's like where you live, but edm is basically the only thing that plays at clubs and the beat is so straight... I think listening to princes funk may have tainted every club experience that I have lol [Edited 11/2/16 21:37pm] [Edited 11/2/16 21:38pm]
Yeah it's weird right? Although being a bit of a music nerd I get like that anyway. "Ribbon in the Sky" was another one. I was just like whaaaaat?! I love chord progressions that give you that feeling. It's the same where I'm from - there are occasionally '80s nights that we'll hit up, but it's usually stuff like Toto and Duran Duran. Which is cool, don't get me wrong, but yeah it's hardly Erotic City or Chic anything that has that organic groove. I think it's because people our age wouldn't really "get it" and be able to put it into context. I mean damn I had a girl once start to grind on me during Smells Like Teen Spirit. I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing.. sorry Kurt lol [Edited 11/3/16 5:47am]

Hahahaha I love that last part fucking true though
I just looked up that song and I thought I was a big stevie fan but i hadnt heard that song before so thanks for that smile But yeah I love good chord progressions hence the steely dan obsession haha
The 80s night thing sounds cool but yeah theyre always the same songs and where im from youd barely hear prince on classic rock stations before he died so like no one plays his shit anywhere now which is sad.
But fuck imagine if erotic city or like Pfunk or the barcays or chic or something played at a club damn thatd be sick. Even newer funky songs dont seem to to get any play at clubs

I loved the read your post. Thank you for posting! I can only imagine how great it is to discover his music.

It's has been a blessing to be a Prince fan for many years, because of the great memories and the live concerts. But I think it is definitaly a trip to discover 'new' music like let's go crazy in 2016! Enjoy it! It must be difficult to decide where to start because there is so much music. What's your favourite song and album? Do you focus on the regular albums or also on outtakes and live concerts?

I am! It's been an amazing experience and has dwarfed my interest in pretty much everyone else right now lol Honestly it has been difficult to know where to start.. My originial tactic of "For You" right up to HNR 2 is out the window. I'm focusing on the '80s stuff at the moment. I have so many favourites it's crazy (especially right now), it's subject to change... But I'd say it's a tossup between "Take Me With U", "And God Created Woman", "Pop Life", "Strollin'", "My Love is Forever" and "Sign 'O' The Times". I always go back to the 3EG version of "Let's Go Crazy" as well. As far as an album's concerned, either PR or 1999. What about you? Right now my focus is on his regular albums and side projects, and will be for a while I can imagine.. But "Moonbeam Levels" intrigues me, how it has almost this cult status and it's a bootleg - much like The Beach Boys' Smile project. I'll be checking that out when PR Deluxe drops for sure. Thanks all for your kind words!

Great choices. My Favourite 80's album is Parade, because it's unique and cannot be compared to other albums.

I love most 80's albums, his most consistent decade, From the 90's my favourite album is The Gold Experience, 00's The Rainbow Children and 10's Art Offical Age. Did you listen to The Truth, which I think is also a great album.

Both of you are like an oasis in the desert! It's a thrill for us to see what we love through new eyes. And if you are ever in the mood for real old school...might I suggest Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding. You'll notice their influence in Prince's music. My son is about your age and has an impressive range of collections (yeah on his ipod....can't touch MY vinyls). He's the one that keeps me connected with newer worldwide eclectic artists.

Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is one of my favourite albums. My mother put me
onto it a few years ago.. such a masterpiece and to think if it wasn't for Marvin's insistence it would've never been released!

Parade is a fun listen. I love the second half in particular. "Mountains" and "Anotherloverholenyohead" especially. When I had my Tidal subscription I was intrigued by his stripped-back records so yeah I listened to The Truth and One Nite Alone a lot. Loved them.
