'Comeback'

The song.

He really sung songs about death or mentioned it quite a lot. I take great comfort in this song actually. I've only just dared to listen to it again tonight. It's really truly beautiful.

Given the timeframe, I always got that. As a listener I always thought it applied to everyone whoever lost somebody, and now it applies to us all here in a way. Even in a relatively obscure song, he's made me less fearful of the inevitable end.

I was surprised, but grateful he allowed us to hear something that must have come from such deep pain for him. It's such a beautiful song. I think it manges to delicately balance the feeling of loss with acceptance and hope, all in under two minutes. The "Tears go here" refrain at the end might be the most moving lyric I've ever heard. The highlight of The Truth for me.

Walking up the stairs
Just the afternoon
Sweet wind blew
Not a moment 2 soon
(Hoo) I cry when I realized
That sweet wind was U

Spirits come and spirits go
Some stick around 4 the aftershow
Don't have 2 say I miss U (don't have 2 say I miss U)
Cause I think U already know
If U ever lose someone
Dear 2 U
Never say the words their gone
They'll come back, yeah
They'll come back, yeah yeah
They'll come back
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here

Yes, given the timeframe it's his most personal song snd I agree it applies to anyone who's lost someone close.
.
It's the song I turn to when I'm thinking about my mother who passed in 2008.

Even reading the words knocks me out emotionally in two ways, one for imagining his grief at the time and one for ours. At least he provides some solace about coming back.

What do you think "tears go here" means? I am not sure what to think of it. Where is 'here'? Is it at the end of the song that the tears go? Is it in the wind?

For someone who recorded hundreds of hours of music, this 2 min track seems to capture so much about him. From the beautiful singing, beautiful melody to the touching words. To me the line "tears go here" is his acknowledgement that the song is very sad and that if we were able to cry, he'd do so at that point in the song. He was no cheap, and he was not going to do any of that emoting in front of people. It was a private pain....

I think "Not a moment 2 soon," means he was on the very edge of despair when the wind blew, leaving him with some kind of hope.

For me, "Tears go here," is like a placement holder. His grief has taken him beyond tears. If he were able to cry and allow us to hear him at that deeply personal moment, this is were it would happen.

I always thought the original Old Friends 4 Sale was his most personal song, but on Comeback he took us to an even more private place. It's both an incredible and terrible song.

Prince referenced the song "Comeback" during an interview with Spike Lee. The excerpt below is from the very beginning of the interview.

--

SPIKE LEE: It is February 7, in the year of our Lord 1997, St. Moritz Hotel, New York, and I am here with the Artist Formerly Known as Prince. To start, there's something that we need to get out of the way. I really feel awkward asking you this, but I just have to. Will you say anything about your child [who, it has been widely reported, died shortly after his birth last fall]?
-
PRINCE: I have written a song that says: If you ever lose someone dear to you, never say the words, "They're gone," and they'll come back.

214, your explanation that "tears go here" means he is starting to cry/here come my tears makes complete sense. That is more or less what I thought he meant also.

Joey, I agree with you. When I listen to that song, it's clear to me how fragile he is emotionally. I can hear the fragility in his voice when he sings. When he says "Tears go here," it's like he can't sing anymore because he's overwhelmed with emotion, and understandably so. I wonder if he meant the song to be longer or if he meant it to be short.
