Santa Fe has long been part of railroad lore. There was a railroad called the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway that was immortalized in a very famous Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer song, "On the Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe."

And yes - the rhyme fits.

i love the train sound percussion that goes the Prince version. it doesn't sound right without it on Mavis's version.

Always check Princevault on great trinkets like this. Kudos to whoever put that site together. It's such a great wealth of information.

I always loved this track. Mavis' version is nice. I do like Prince's version more, because it has more of a gritty, sandy, train-sound in it. Train songs are always fun (much like traveling road music too). There is a boot of it out there, but then a clearer version was leaked in more recent years.

I think "Train" and "Moonbeam Levels", two very different songs, should have been included on the forthcoming Prince4Ever set. It's at an interesting time when it was recorded. Right in the middle of 1986, after Parade material was done, and moving into the Sign O The Times stuff (which obviously was birthed from Dream Factory, Camille, and Crystal Ball). It would have fit great on Parade and on SOTT too. It tells a great story, has a very memorable hook and melody, and almost lends to a crowd singing along with it. It's infectious.

It's a favorite outtake of mine. It'd probably make a top 10 or 20 list if I had to make one.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Love it. Worked on the Dream Factory and is one of the songs I think should have made the move to SOTT. I think it would have been perfect in place of Its gonna be a beautiful night (along with either Shockadelica/Good Love/Joy In Repetition to fill up the extra time allowed).

nod When I lived in Flagstaff, we used to see all the Santa Fe trains go past through the town... And Santa Fe, the town, like Flagstaff, is also part of the famous Route 66 itinerary.

It's a great song, with the distant train sound and a retro bluesy feel, I love it.

Interestingly enough, the Santa Fe railway didn't actually go to Santa Fe. The trains couldn't make the climb.

I vaguely remember someone telling me about this before, but I had forgotten it since... Yes that's quite interesting considering the name.
