It's not my favourite era (sorry), although my first Prince bootleg (which I bought in 1991) was a live show from the Lovesexy tour. And the first is always special! Also, the video for I Wish U Heaven is my earliest memory of watching Prince on TV and actually knowing who he was!

I recently got my first boot of the Lovesexy tour since it was so legendary. I am still trying to decide what I think about it. I never heard Prince go so long with 1 minute versions of so many songs in the first half played at a much speeded up tempo. If the music wasn't so organized and brilliant, you would think everyone was on speed! At the halfway point, when he finally got to the Lovesexy songs, he did give tender care to many of these and they came off well in concert. I finally concluded that the speeded part may have been an artistic decision in that many of them were his dirtiest songs and they were a prelude of all his vices to set up for the Lovesexy conflict that was to come in the second half of the concert. When I think of it that way, I really admire his audacity as it certainly wasn't a commercial decision. Perhaps that is why it has been widely noted that European audiences loved the tour in contrast to the American crowds who just wanted the hits.

Your theory may be correct. Prince was very bold in expressing his personal values throughout his career.

This era fell into the right timing based off SOTT, I think the album holds its own and aged well, and oh yeah Dortmund

I have yet to listen the whole album, only know Anna, I Wish U and Alphabet, in regard to the tour, it seems like a wonderful live concert; he seems in his creative peak, although you can make your case for Sign O' The Times Tour.

[Edited 9/8/16 16:07pm] Let us all discuss this topic as well regarding Prince and his expression related to what "bigtimefan" stated. [If you have an issue, take it up with the mod in question snip - luv4u] There are some here that embrace this unique contribution that Prince made to society as he dismantled social norms. Unfortunately, there are others who are against this. Let's discuss why Prince fans/fams may or may not agree on Prince's bold choice to break down gender rules. [Snip - luv4u]

It's interesting... but sometimes it came across as a little to much for my taste.

It was always going to be an uphill struggle to follow SOTT. I'd say it's an average album with a couple of gems. But the live show, that's a different matter! I saw it in Birmingham, England and it blew me away. There's always a rainbow 🌈 , at the end of every rain ☔️

I like the fashion from this era I loved his hair tied back, reminded me of a pirate or highwayman. Seems very inspired by 18th century France. I don't get the too feminine bit. There's always a rainbow 🌈 , at the end of every rain ☔️

Hey Latin. I'm not looking for a fight...I am the most liberal chick in the world and have NO issues with homophobia, etc. . I bought the Lovesexy tour program with the above image on the cover. Everyone who's seen is, says the same thing: "oh, is Prince gay?" . IMO there's a fine line between gender expression and just wanting to be outrageous for attention. Way back then even, I never got the vibe Prince was gay or transgender, and for ME he pushed the envelope too far since he was just playing a "role". It certainly wasn't a big deal though, I understand the value of "shock and awe" with publicity, etc. and continued being a bigtimefan! . However, if the same photo was of Freddie Mercury I would have loved it as that was HIS persona. Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

But, what if he wasn't "just playing a 'role'"?

My first concert... Him naked on the cover... The joy in the music... The long hair... What's not to love?? & the outfits were insane - so tight, so bare, so creative. Probably my fave fashion era, he was so free, I'm in love with all of it

What are you saying? You think in private Prince was transgender, homosexual, bisexual, or wore women's clothes? . I guess it wouldn't have mattered to me, but IMO a lot of his lyrics wouldn't make the same sense. Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

What I'm saying is that I really don't care what Prince was doing in the privacy of his bedroom. As you said, it wouldn't have mattered to me. Personally, I LOVED his over-the-top costumes during the LoveSexy era. I especially loved his affinity for polka dots. His hair was to DIE for. His Mozart outfit was too stinking cute!! And, he and Cat were SIZZLING HOT. BTW: I will NEVER believe that they were not lovers, but that's another Oprah Winfrey show.

He was at his absolute peak at that time. In my opinion, the Dortmund concert film beats Sign O' the Times in every way. It's one of the few concert films that actually makes me feel like I'm there. Oh and try to listen to the whole album, this really is the kind of record you should listen to from the beginning to the end. This is not music, this is a trip.

I mean it really was the same band. With the exception of a couple of people. SOTT/Lovesexy kinda blended together. Just a costume change, LOL!

YES!!!!!! Cat was THE BOMB. She and Prince were HAWT!!!! None of his subsequent dancers ever came close to Cat. A lot of people try to write Cat out of P's legacy, but she WAS LoveSexy and SOTT. I believe he wrote "Hot Thang" for her. And, I think he had a MAJOR thing for Cat, but for some reason, they never went public.
