The vault - old friends 4 sale

I just can't stop listening to this for the past 2 days. I don't know if it's because of allthe memorial show talk, the museum opening or just part of the grieving process. I feel I need to listen to Prince music that you won't hear elsewhere on TV or radio. I think it's time to release some unreleased music. I'm fed up seeing bootlegs in legit stores, people freeloading off his legacy. They are now selling them on vinyl.

When the lights go down has just come on. A new Prince album will help us. I know it's selfish, but it's also to show Princes music and legacy will never die.

What do think of new music being released? I feel guilty about wanting this.

There is lonely is just so chilling. Beautiful but you sense a fragilness in the imagery it conjures.

Extraordinary is one of my all time favorites!! His voice is so silky and beautiful on this track!! Feels like one of those jems that would for Prince was a song burried on an obscure record but for anyone else...it could define a career!! So thankful for him and his gifts....

Although Prince gave this away to WB along with Chaos and Disorder to fulfil his contract, I think he underestemated the strength of the material.

5 Women for example, had been kicking around, given away, re-recorded....it was like a throw away. But its a damn classic. The lyrics are so clever and the melody is sublime.

I love this album. When The Lights Go Down is such a musical gem. The live version of this at the Club Nokia in 2009 - which I happened to be listening to as the same time as I read your post - shows how infinite Prince creativity was.

Love this album. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes i love that song too. It is a great song with a great story to it. It seems underrated in the Prince fan world.

Definitely, You wonder sometimes if he actually deliberately underplayed this album to keep it under the radar. For me I agree, it is not a throwaway. I think it's similar to HNR pt 2, not musically but in the way it is a collection of crafted songs with Prince arrangments showcasing his talents. In any case lstening to is last night, made me think about putting HNR pt 2 on also.

Strongly agreed. People hate on this album so much and when I got it for the first time about a year ago I expected it to be totally garbage. Didn't expect it to be SO good. It's funny because the sound is consistent across the album - kind of a jazzy soul sound that isn't too different from the stuff he started to put out in the 2000s with Musicology.

.

She Spoke 2 Me is a top P song imo - when the backing vocals are going back and forth after he keeps the solo rolling over the chords from the verse chords to the chorus... I mean that is genius. I've sat and played back just that solo well over 100 times.

Prince was about to release Rave when WB finally put TVOF4S out, so he wasn't involved in promoting it at all. I think he was aware of the quality of the material, which would have been left in the vault among so many other gems if he hadn't had to compile 2 additional albums between TGE and Emancipation, to give WB so he could bail out. In a sense we were lucky cos neither this nor C&D would have been out at all if not for contractual obligations, but it's obvious Prince put a lot of care in compiling those 2 albums in the best possible manner.

God I hadn't even realised! lol

At least it's better than the weekly "Prince is over and done" thread we had for years. Its disappearance is probably the only good thing that came out of P's passing.

Hahahaha wow I'm glad that kind of thread isn't on here. That is just preposterous.

Side note - when I saw the Revolution Reunion in MPLS recently some people were in line talking to me and they effectively told me that was how they had felt about him. It was so typical:
.
"Oh Purple Rain is just the greatest. I loved it. I didn't like when he was the symbol. I don't know it just wasn't the same." I've talked to a bunch of people who say that and I keep thinking 'oh my god these are the fans he was talking about trying to get rid of!'.
.
All really nice people, and a valid opinion to have for sure, but man I wanted to talk about all his work with some of these people not just Purple Rain. That's like liking in a town your whole life and never leaving it! How boring would that be?!?! + that is why I love the org

This was the first album to come out after i became a fan... the first album i anticipated, waited for, i went out to buy on the day of it's release... sure, Rave eclipsed the experience only a few months later but the vault will always have a special place in my heart cause I'll always associate it with that feeling of discovery

It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Please dont feel guilty about wanting the unreleased music. Prince knew it would eventually be released. I think it will help to heal our hearts. It will be out soon. Nevermind those who regard it as anything but positive.

and WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN is AWESOME!!!!

Adorecream

Its a good little album, It's about that walk and She spoke 2 me are great songs and the rest is decent. I like Extraordinary and Sarah too. Love the line "your ass is like a fine cut diamond", basically some decent early 1990s Prince out takes.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
