I like Prince's 90s work - does this make me a weirdo freak or an open minded person?

I was introduced to Prince's 90s work, namely the "Diamonds and Pearls" and "LoveSymbol" album, then researched into his earlier work.

I always visualise a 1991-era Prince (how he looked and dressed in the "D&P" video) rather than a 1984 era Prince, which is his most famous era.

So yeah, considering his 90s music wasn't as up-there with his 80s work, I do enjoy listening to albums like "Come", "Emancipation" and "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic".

I don't know if I have bad music taste without realising it, or I just have a tendency toward 90s music in general?

Actually, the first album I heard was Come. I bought it on cassette for 50c at a pawn shop, it didn't even have a cover. Just this mysterious tape that said PRINCE - COME. I was like 11 years old too. If U're 18 and over, c'mere, I got something 4 ur mind... I thought I had discovered some amazing secret glimpse into the dark adult world. I guess I really had! God bless Prince.

No. Just someone with a different opinion. Prince dabbled in different genres and appealed to a wide demographic. I preferred his pre Purple Rain stuff but I like most of his albums. Personally, I find Love Symbol to be pretty bad as a whole but that doesn't mean I'm right and you're wrong. Just different opinions.

Don't ever second-guess yourself. Like what you like, and don't worry what anyone else might have to say about your tastes.

.

Think about it this way - Prince is the one who created all that '90s-era music. He liked it too - and deemed it worthy of release. You're in good company if you dig that stuff.

.

One of my best buddies got into Prince during the '80s, but his two all-time fave P albums are prince and 'Gold Experience.' We have good-natured debates all the time about the merits of those albums (which I love too) versus the albums generally considered his "peak." To each his/her own.

.

The '90s Prince discography is a gold mine of great music, even if most would argue the albums are as consistently strong as the decade before.

.

By the way, I recommend Matt Thorne's 'Prince: The Man and His Music' because he spends a lot of time discussing the music from the '90s and beyond that doesn't get as much attention as the "prime years."

Nope you are not alone! I like his 80s stuff and some of his early stuff but his 90s up til his passing are my favorite albums.

I, too, love 90's Prince and always visualize him in 1989 Batman-1994 Come eras' fashion and hairstyles. I love his late 80's-mid 90's work and Love Symbol has always been one of my top favorite albums.

Personally, I think we're just more open minded and didn't care what other fans said about 90's Prince?

I am not sure why you feel the only options for liking his 90s work would be to be called a weirdo freak or open minded. We all love Prince throughout. For me, the 90s mirrored the 80s a lot. His sound changed, but the strength of the albums was just as good as the 80s. We didn't get a lot of b-sides per se (post-1993) although we got a lot of remixes, but we did get a lot of material. No movies, but numerous VH1 specials, tons of award show appearances, and even singing appearances on talk shows (morning and late night).

I love the mid-90s, with Exodus, 1-800-New-Funk, Gold, Come, The Beautiful Experience, and Chaos & Disorder (the latter of which felt like a true cap on the whole run, which he intended it to be).

The Gold Experience album mirrors Purple Rain heavily, and you can just about match song-per-song. Rocker opener "Endorphin" "Let's Go Crazy". Anthem "Gold" "Purple Rain". Dirty song "319" "Darling Nikki". Duet "We March" "Take Me With U". Ballad "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" "The Beautiful Ones". etc.

COME was a masterpiece of goth funk, and I wore that shit out back in the day. Exodus was the funkiest he'd been on record since The Black Album or 1999, and I feel like he really found his funk during that time. I think his band, and just personal growth as an artist, let him have that moment with Exodus.

So no, you're not a weirdo freak. You're a fan, like the rest of us. The prince era was just as important to Princetory as Purple Rain, 1999 or Sign O The Times.

That's when I became a fan as well. I was more into MJ in the 80's but not Prince so much. Somehow the songs and more full production on Diamonds and Pearls resonated with me more that the sparse production of his 80's material had. Later I came to appreciate all of his material. I loved the prince years. He became kind of an indie artist and a rebel with his name change, promoting material that WB delayed in releasing. The NPG was a killer band and I loved how he mixed hard rock w/ hip hop. He also became more media freindly during this time, appearing much more on TV, even showing his more human side and having a sense of humor.

90's Prince was mostly cornball, but there were gems buried in the cheese. So in that sense, you get a lot. You get cornball, cheese and a few gems. And since he released so much in this era, the 90's can be considered very filling.
The 90's has a lot offer. And if you like it, there plenty of it.

...and let's remember if Prince really was doing drugs it was definitely in the 90's when his work took that nose dive. So we can excuse his 90's work as that as a man on drugs thinking he could do no wrong.
90's pPrince and 80's Prince are not the same man. When you do drugs, if you're lucky you find something like religion to cling to to save your life. And stereotypically that's when Prince joined the JW's and seemingly cleaned up and started the 2000's back with a semblance of the genius he once was.

2000's Prince may not have been the most creative, but he looked sharp and performed like the badass he was. Once again showing the world he was the greatest live performer alive and by a long mark.

So the we can call the 90's as Prince's lost decade.

The only reasons why people shit on P's 90's music work is either because:

They can't help comparing it to earlier works without realizing that every artist do evolve, losing some and getting some in the process

or

They're Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney fans who don't know a thing about Black music, which Prince embraced in the 90's

U're perfectly normal smile

There are at least three great songs on every Prince album, and that´s a lot of good songs when you consider the amount of albums he released.

-

Also...let your own taste be the judge, not the opinions of others. When I first discovered George Clinton´s music I was much too young to know about Parliament/Funkadelic, so I just enjoyed what I heard without any expectations or opinions of others, and unlike some hardcore Parliament/Funkadelic fans, I have no problem with some of the not so wellknown Clinton albums of the mid 80s.

-

And if you happen to like 90s Prince, that´s perfectly fine.

Enjoy!

I started to discover his discography after he passer and I did it in chronological order (still haven't finished yet!!) And I love his 90s stuff. At first I was a bit disapppointed because his music in the 80s was incredible but so is his music in the 90s!! I love Love Symbol album, so many great songs and Come is amazing too. I love when he raps. I think it's différent and it's great.

I don't think you have bad musical taste because of this. I believe that is what set Prince apart from others, he was just so eclectic and could appeal to a diverse group of people with varied musical taste. I finally got my daughter to appreciate him, and she discovered nuggets on her own. While I love falsetto Prince, she hates it. She leans toward rock and 3rd EyeGIRL,while I lean towards funk and R&B. She did however force Another Love to grow on me.

Um no not at all. He made some great songs in the 90s like Pope, THe Most Beautiful in the World, Dinner With Delores, Somebody Somebody and too many to name. Yeah there are some people who exclusively like the 80s but there are likes of people like myself who like his work from his first to his last album and just treasure it.

before he died, there was a contingent on here who virulently asserted that Prince was a has been after Purple Rain. I wasn't amongst them, I believe that Prince got better and better in many ways with age, his singing was better, his playing was better, his use of the studio was better, the difference was he wasn't the new kid on the block, the hot pop item of the week anymore. He could have put out an album even better than purple rain and it wouldn't have done the same sales, he knew and said this before.

Prince really stretched out his musical muscles and delved into playing a wide range of stuff thats what made him extra interesting.

There is nothing wrong with your tendency to the 90's era Prince, I dont think it means you got bad taste. You probably have your reasons why you feel that era is more special for you.

Personally I probably see alltogether the ol school 80's Prince era as the coolest and I think thats probably when he was on his most consistant roll.

But again this possibly has a lot to do with the fact that I discovered him in around 1983 when I myself was in my very early teens and hence I went through all my youthfull years with this connection to Princes music. Still even if I am objective about it I do see that era as being his most consistant.

But I think Prince did some strong stuff in the 90's ...

From the 90's I particuliarly like : Graffitti Bridge, LoveSymbol, Diamonds and Pearls, and Emancipation.

From the 00's I particuliarly like : One Night Alone, The Rainbow Children, 3121, PlanetEarth, LotusFlow3r.

From the 80's I particuliarly like : Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in A Day, Parade, Sign of the Times, Lovesexy, Batman.

You'd only be a weirdo freak if you didn't like Prince music. 'Come' , 'Emancipation' and 'Rave' are three of my least favourite Prince albums to listen to as a whole experience, which is what I've always loved about him. How many artists are there who have such an enormous and varied catalogue of music that you go way past talking about taste in music, and get to a point where you can compare taste in Prince? Gotta love that. biggrin
