JUST RELEASED: "Prince - A Life in Music"

Fellow fams - I'm pleased to announce the release of my new book Prince: A Life in Music. It's a complete update of the tribute I published in 2004. (That original book went by the same title and is out of print.) The paperback is availabl... on Amazon. The e-book will be available shortly. In Prince's honor, all proceeds will be donated to the Harlem Children's Zone, a charity he supported.

For the fam community, I hope it is a unique and valuable contribution to the celebration of Prince's life. Framed around 62 songs that represent chapters in his career, it traces the full arc of his life and legacy. It's a chance to relive the eventful journey, and at the same time, it presents some new angles. Here are a few examples:

  • "Ol' Skool Company" (playlist 5, track 6) spotlights the commercial breakthrough of Lotusflow3r: a totally D.I.Y. sales effort that nearly topped the charts.
  • "Cause and Effect" (playlist 5, track 7) recounts the events surrounding his hip surgery in 2010.
  • "Baltimore" (playlist 5, track 11) recalls the last time he performed a major concert event with a guitar in his hands and a band behind him (at Washington's D.C. Warner Theater).

For me, writing this book was an opportunity to rediscover the depth of Prince's genius, the breadth of his impact, and the story in his songs. I hope reading it provides the same experience for you.

Thanks for your consideration,

Matt Carcieri

Thank you for this.
I especially like that you've focused on some of his later work - and it's sweet that your donating the proceeds after what I'm sure was very hard work.
Peace.

Sounds great. I bought a copy of your first book and love the choice of songs and your writing the lines "Prince was a sex salamander, drying heaving like a hyena ready for sex" or something like that about songs from the Dirty Mind/Controversy era.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Hi Matt,

I purchased a copy of your new book and although I'm only on chapter one (Lustful Ambition (1958 - 1982)) I like what I've read so far. I really like the way you have the book laid out. I like the idea of "song lists" and I do believe most of what Prince wrote in his songs was autobiographical and spoke volumes about his feelings, desires, and life lessons. So far, you've drawn me in and I'm already expecting this to be a very worthwhile and insightful read.

Thank you for writing it. <3

Sweet wind blew
Not a moment to soon.
I cry when I realized
That sweet wind was you.
