FUNKNROLL

Almost 40 years? First heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" in 3rd grade during some sort of "everybody get up and dance" moment. Hindsight makes it seem like there was a Prince song in my life every year since then, although I skipped Dirty mind, Controversy. I was too young to buy music til middle school. "When Doves Cry" turned everybody's head that summer. Raspberry Beret and Pop Life were a big deal in 8th grade. In high school, SOTT was a strange surprise. I rediscovered 1999 via a friend's old cassette. My senior year, I made the trip to Cincinnati (alone) to see him perform Lovesexy. I later became friends with a local record store employee who turned me on to rare/unreleased material. Have to say he lost me there in the 90s. He just seemed so angry. But I kept checking in.

I may have forgotten some shows but I think I was fortunate to see him perform 7 times...

1988 - Lovesexy - Cincinnati, Ohio
1997 - Jam of the Year - Landover, MD
1997 - Jam of the Year afterparty (930 Club) Washington, DC
2004 - Musicology, Washington DC
2006 - Tamar Tour, Washington DC
2013 - Montreux (3rd night), Montreux Switzerland
2015 - Baltimore Rally 4 Peace, Baltimore MD

RIP
🎶☔️💜☔️🎶

From 1980 none stop. Seems a lot of other Prince fans have had time away from him and then come back. Is that just a Prince thing? All the bands and musicians i follow i stick with them through thick and thin. Did MJ fans have time from MJ and then come back, just curious.

I never did and I am a hardcore MJ fan. Sure I listen to other artists but I always went back to MJ. As for Prince, I've been a fan for about 10 years

i was always an mj fan but not like I was for bruce and Prince. I followed his career for the most part and checked out all his albums but Invincible, his death (said it several times) hurt worse because of the hell he was put through (rightly or wrongly). I see MJ as a victim in some ways, Prince, well, i don't know, but he wasn't no damned victim, he had a great run, I'm just sad that a guy still so on top of his game is gone. Hell, Michael was really a shell of himself at his death, I don't think that's true for Prince, at least not concerning his music. and as to the first question, americans did an about face when michael died, he went overnight from a pariah to a saint, shows how little a good amount of the public really believed the allegations.

I became a fan of Prince twice, at almost the same time. I found a cassette tape with a mix of songs, and there was two that I fell in love with. One was Crazy You, and the other was Baby. I had no idea that they were Prince, or who even Prince was at the time. I grew up in church and had very strict parents. Then I heard Little Red Corvette on the radio, and I was hooked. I used to stay up late Friday nights to watch Friday Night Videos just to hope to see LRC or 1999. So, as I was a Prince fan loving the 1999 album, I also had my cassette tape that I didn't know was Prince until later.

I noticed that too. The ones that bullied me in middle school for being a MJ fan were kissing his ass when he died

Wow! I was just thinking how long I've been a Prince fan(38yrs) I was so looking forward to his next album b4 he died.

Bought my first Prince record in either late 1982 or early 1983.

So I been a fan pretty much since then...30 odd years wow ,Man doesn't time flyyyyyy.

Im from Sydney Australia, so I dont think his first 2 albums had too much airplay here when they first came out. I hadnt heard about them anyways.

I first recall seeing him on T.V with Controversy and Sexuality music clips, that really got my attention but I didnt rush out and buy the album.

When I next saw him on T.V , it was the 1999 music clip, well that was it for me I couldnt get that song outta my head.

I was around 13yo and I went out and bought the 1999 album. Gradually after that I did my homework and caught up on the earlier albums and then just bought every new one that came out.

Me three, I copped so much shit from family and friends about MJ during his trial and the earlier 1993 Jordan Chandler stuff, they were like "Why are you standing by him, hes a freak, look at him" and then like when he died "Oh that MJ was so talented, and man he could dance".

.

Like a lot of us I got into MJ first (1983 when Beat it and Billie Jean were hits) before Prince, but always managed to remain big fans of both. It was just I liked both of them and what they had to offer. I am sure when I was buying my first Prince singles in 1991, I was also buying all the singles off Dangerous too.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

1989- 1994 :
  • starts with Purple Rain in 1989, first time I saw it (was only about 9 years old then, I remember thinking how risqué it was that my parents let me watch this - surely they weren't paying attention). I didn't know any english back then, but I could sing along to every song. (Even darling Nikki - guess my parents let that one slide seeing as I didn't understand the words anyway).
  • right on the back of that Diamond & Pearls came out, big hits, all over MTV, I was really into it
  • Symbol album -> still my all time favourite P album.

Then I moved into my grunge-rocker phase and forgot about prince. Emancipation did not interest me (I still have no love for that album). Even TMBGITW didn't score points with him.

.

Flashforward to 1998 - Jam of the year tour - when I'm in a club with my girlfriends, and there's a buzz going through the audience, and we hear that Prince played a show in town that night and has come to the VIP area of the club.

.

2001-now:

  • Fast forward to a friend giving me 'The Best of Prince' in 2001, and me suddenly discovering how GREAT he was and really now getting into him. That's when I started to visit websites, looking for info about him, the usenet groups, the housequake forum, the org.
  • After that, the rainbow children (verdict: GREAT! Loved it, even with the preaching and so on), Musicology (one of the best!), and I've been hooked ever since.
  • Was lucky to see him live, quite a number of times, in big venues and also a few aftershows!
