Been following the Man since 83' , caught trains to Sydney once a month ( 90 min ride ) in the early 90's to buy bootlegs & spend all my hard earned cash. It was quite difficult to keep up with Prince in Australia, but I bought everything I could find!

Miss him dearly....

39 years. I don't remember how I made the connection from the voice on the radio and the picture I saw, but I remember distinctly talking my best-friend Diana's ear off about him when I was 13 in Jr. High School. Somehow I'd learned quite a bit of info about him while at the same time hiding my interest in him from my Dad. CW Deans was highly instrumental in that.

I knew of him since the Bandstand performance and through the controversy, 1999 and purple rain albums, I became a fanatic.

For 32 wonderful years... The first song I heard (on the radio) and liked, was "1999", but I didn't become a fan until 1984, when I was an impressionable teenager biggrin . (And impressed I was ! wink )

Same as, although I think it might have been early '83 in my case. But same age, same era, same song.

From 1980 none stop. Seems a lot of other Prince fans have had time away from him and then come back. Is that just a Prince thing? All the bands and musicians i follow i stick with them through thick and thin. Did MJ fans have time from MJ and then come back, just curious.

I was an MJ fan first (aged 6) in 1981 and then became a fan of Prince in 1987. I dipped in and out at various stages during my life but was always interested in what they were doing.

For me though around 2000 Prince's music had significantly less AirPlay & with his strict rules on shutting down stuff put on the internet when my children started getting into music they knew who MJ was, more than they did Prince because they couldn't get hold of his music (most of my stuff is on vinyl not on an iPhone or iPod). I educated them very quickly though, but their friends had no clue. Not sure they like the car journey to school as I play Prince all the time so their friends WILL know (subliminal messaging works right)!

I was at a concert in Oakland and the woman sitting next to me asked me how long I'd been interested in Prince. I told her since the late 70s. She said I was lying. That he hadn't recorded anything until 1980. Oh, well.

Since 1984 when I was in high school.

I had seen the "1999" video on TV before then, but didn't like Prince at the time. Jill wearing lingerie dancing way too close to Lisa, plus being shot on videotape instead of film like most other videos, it looked to me like someone's homemade porn video. I felt very filthy watching it. And seeing the picture sleeve of the "Let's Pretend We're Married" 12" in stores later that year didn't help either.

It was when the trailers for Purple Rain began airing on TV with "Let's Go Crazy" playing in the background that I knew I had to see this movie and get this album.

Hi LoneCrone! Apparently she was the one who was "lying" since his first album came out in '78 and his second in '79. Did you let her know the facts? hug

A casual fan since 79 when I first heard Wanna Be Your Lover, more of a fan in 80 with Dirty Mind, and then flat out obsessed fanatic since Controversy in 81. First Prince concert was that year too.

When i 1st heard "i want to be your lover", i thought it was Michael Jackson because of his falsetto voice and when i found out it was Prince(and i didn't know who he was) i was a fan every since.
