Alphabet Street yes

I'm gonna drive my daddy's Thunderbird (My daddy's thunderbird)
A white rad ride, '66 ('67) so glam it's absurd
I'm gonna put her in the back seat
And drive her 2 ... Tennessee

Love, love, love Alphabet Street! Never fails to make me laugh biggrin especially the part where P goes "I'm gonna talk so sexy, she'll want me from my head 2 my feet". (A silent wink should be inserted after those lines.) I laugh because I imagine the song being sung by someone trying to work up some mojo. And that someone is Prince, which makes it incongruous because come on, he's Prince!

Love Anna Stesia and Lovesexy too!

I agree this album is a trip. I enjoy it the most when I listen to it as Prince intended. I could not stand Alphabet Street when it was first released but for some reason absolutely loved the video. IIRC it was the first time I had seen Prince in a video without a band for a long time so that's why I loved it so much cloud9 biggrin. If I have to name one track it would be the one that can't be named so if I can't say that one it has to be Lovesexy.

It is hard, for me, to hear individual songs from the album, opposed to in the context of the album as a whole. The songs are very dependent on each other for a more robust conceptual lexicon. "Eye No" never quite gets its footing for being funky. It starts and stops with the groove. The 2nd side, while good songs, seems a hodge-podge of stuff. Hard funk & rhythmic workout with "Dance On", but it's really hot on the EQ with "Lovesexy" (the horns are great, but a bit distorted). It's not a bad record. I love everything through 1992, lock stock n' barrel. But Lovesexy does have its problems. For fans, it's a fun record. For radio and the public you wanna win over, it's shaky at best.

I wasn't a huge fan of "Alphabet St" when it came out. It seemed thin, half-assed, the close up slo-mo shots, some of the dancing was corny A.F. The video was just as bad, to me, because it was cheap green screen effects and crossfades that only Windows Movie Maker could rival. "Raspberry Beret" had a blue screen, but the colors were lush, there was nice animation, and the band was there mirroring the characters on the album and in the animation. It was fun, and light-hearted. "Alphabet St" is lite like an iffy salad dressing at the Sizzler.

I want Lovesexy to be part of the catalog. It is a really nice record, as a whole. But I wish he'd pushed Sign O The Times more through late 1987. SOTT seemed textured, thick, and impressive. Lovesexy on the heels of that feels like the fumes of the SOTT tour.

Footnote: The next closest thing to Prince not having a full band in a video was probably "Kiss", with Wendy being the only one.

falloff Thanks for explaining how it was made. I understand that during a blizzard, Prince demanded a camera crew come out in the middle of a snowstorm to record it. lol To meet his demands, local camera men were used who had less than stellar equipment for the job. Anyway despite the negatives, I loved that video. Prince was my main focal point and he looked good and that was good enough for me at the time. Compared to RB which I think is the perfect partnership of visual and song there is no contest. I also loved the Kiss video but it wasn't just P on his own in that one. Wendy sat and strummed her guitar and P danced with a masked woman, not the same vibe. Previously to that the last time I think I saw Prince in a video on his own was the one for IWBYL.

Right now it is "I Wish You Heaven". And oddly, back in the day, when it was first released, I always skipped it, so I am only JUST getting acquainted with it. I didn't even realize it was FROM Lovesexy. When I first bought the Cassette Tape. Yes, you read that right. Alphabet Street was my favorite. I especially liked the line. "I'm gonna drive my daddy's Thunderbird, a white rad ride, 66, 67....to Tennesee". Becuase I am from Tennessee! lol I don't know why it was so cool to have my home state mentioned. I am female.

They said to that point. Prince has been solo in videos since "Alphabet St", but we were talking up to that point.

Anna Stesia is obviously the best. After that it's either Alphabet Street or I Wish U Heaven. When 2 R In Love is great too.

The title track is the weakest song on it.

How did you know it was Annastesia?

.

Next song, its a tie between When 2 R in Love and Alphabet Street. I think I will go for Alphabet Street - I know its the "hit" but come on that song is just brilliant. It nearly made me a fan, as I had it on some Solid Gold hits of 88 type thing. I was 12 and wanted the album, but my Mum saw that cover and said "Hell naw", so I had to wait until Diamonds and Pearls.

.

I really love Glam Slam, Lovesexy and I wish u heaven too, and the other 3 tracks are good, but not as good as the rest.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Lovesexy!

The album came out a few days before I went into the army but I had time to absorb it... and I uses Lovesexy when I ran and when I felt down. Keep in mind I did not have the tape or cd...i had it in my head....

Once i got to my duty station I put Lovesexy as my religion on my dog tags! I think i lost them...at one point i was ordered to remove them! Someone TOLD on me! can believe that? some adult US ARMY Solider went to my sergeants and ratted me out and I damn near got in trouble. as i was always on the razors edge of such i gave in...

The whole album is a stroke of genius. Listening to it as I type, I can't even pick one track (literally, LOL). But I'll say this, "When 2 R In Love" fits perfectly on Lovesexy. On the Black Album, it should've been replaced by "Rebirth Of The Flesh" IMHO.

"Positivity" It used to be "Alphabet Street" when I was a boy..

Bonnie Boyer is sooooo special on this song.

He featured her on this, and it worked, and I know why he hardly ever perfromed it without her.

I might be the only one, but it's Eye No for me.

It has the amazing Ingrid introduction:
"Rain is wet and sugar is sweet"

The best opening lyric to any Prince song:
"Hundalasiliah!"

Great interplay between the lyrics and the voices:
"No! - is what Spooky Electric say, it's not OK (No!)"

The arm waving that takes me back to Paris 88:
"No! - Raise your hand up straight in the air
Swing it 2 the right, savoir-faire"

The incredibly joyous moment when the chants go from "No" to "Yes":

"Then blow that devil away!

(Say yes) (Yes!)
If U want this feeling called love"

I think this is Prince's most uplifting song in his whole catalogue.

You're not alone...from the second eye know starts I'm just happy...it's a go to cheer up album for me, by the time I get to Positivity I'm just in a different place spirtiually and emotionally...never fails for me. yes

Lovesexy is one of 3 (that i can think of off the top of my head) albums that start with a vocal/voice that is not Prince!

I am so dumb! there are at least 5!

never mind like 8 so far...

Lovesexy....it should have been a single at the time, and the fact that it wasn't (although Alphabet St was great) may have contributed to the album not being successful. I think the album is up with there SOTT, it was his last great album in my opinion. I think the other singles, Glam Slam and I Wish U Heaven, again, I like them as I like all tracks on the album, but there needed to be a huge track and I think Lovesexy was that.

Maybe an opportunity missed, but the album's a masterpiece.
