Actually, I not only heard him sing "past" with my own ears in concert, but if you Google his P&M tours you can hear him clearly sing "past", which would be correct grammar as well.

Doesn't he say both? I feel like I've heard him say both (at different times).

[Edited 9/21/16 21:01pm]

That;s cetainly possible, but I've only heard "past". boogie

Starfish and coffee 'Made with serpent jam' - I thought this wa logical since the kids thought there was a witch in her lunchbox.

C'MON - I can't be the only one that thought this? anyone?

I also misheard that line, but as "made with surf and jam". Obviously my version is quite nonsensical but to my mind it fitted the dreamlike and slightly surreal lyrics of the song quite well, I also thought it made sense given that it continued the sea theme from the titular starfish.

Clearly neither of you is Canadian. Maple syrup is practically our national food! lol

My first Prince record purchased was 1999. On "Let's Pretend We're Married", he says--

"I'm in love with God, he's the only way..."

.

Now, what I thought he was saying was--

"I'm in love with guys, it's the only way..."

.

LMAO.

I was 12 years old--don't hate! cool

During the Musicology Tour, Prince was interviewed in Musician or Guitar World (cannot recall exactly) and said someting to the effect that the most bizarre lyric misinterpretation he'd ever heard was when someone came up to him and quoted the lyrics to "When Doves Cry" as "Dig if U will the picture...of U and Marvin Gaye & the kids."

I was in a bookstore reading this magazine in 2004 and fell the fuck out laughing.

Not exactly a lyric thing but for the longest time I thought the song (There'll Never B) Another Like Me was meant to diss Rick James, whose name is muttered mid song. Eventually I realized that Don Cornelius and Rick James were the "crazy friends" in the song lol

So as a kid (maybe 10-11), me and my friend loved "Let's go Crazy", but never knew what the Purple Banana part was, so we'd say "Slipped on a purple banana and girl I've seen the trust". disbelief giggle We knew it wasnt right, but we didnt know what it was, so we emprovised and made it something we both thought was funny. I still slip and say it sometimes! Opps!

Also same song, I used to think he said "Time to get laid" at the end (instead of "Take me away")

"Put on your boots Alfred...let's go!"

"Thoughts" and "funk" are legitimate lyrics that replace "f*ck".

SheilaE said in an interview that she didn't want to sing the lyric "f*ck" cuz it made her uncomfortable and she would often argue with P about and would sing it her way.

Yeah also on that Tavis interview he told of a lady he knew who thought he was saying "pay the rent collect" instead of "Little Red Corvette"

This site http://www.amiright.com/m...ince.shtml has a great list of Prince misheard lyrics, but I'd never heard the "U and Marving Gaye and the kids" one. That's brilliant.

But if you desperately need a laugh read the Bob Marley misheard lyrics. It's so funny it hurts. And it's hard to believe that English is the first language of those responding.

For years I used to joke that he said my last name in "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night". It could be a moan, or a word - I'm never sure. But in a lazy way, it sounds like my last name. (I always knew better, FYI.)

Instead of;

Great thread... for a long time, I misunderstood the lyric in "Space" where he says "That everything I wanna do 2 your body, baby....I would do 2 your head"....for a long time (too long to mention biggrin)... I thought he was singing "I would do 2 your hand." For awhile I thought he must REALLY be turned on my a woman's hands!! eek eek

Thank you! Laughing out loud😂 glad I'm not the only one with lyrical misinterpretation... I, for many years, thought Earth Wind Fire's Brick House
Lyrics (instead of) "built like an Amazon" was "built like an emicka-sun" yow, she's brick House....

Figured an "Emicka sun " was a slang term I wasn't up to speed on.

Also thought Van Halen's "Jump" said " MAXWELL JUMP! " rather than " might as well jump".... [b]

Until very recently I thought that the line 'Live music from a band plays a song called "Soul Psychodelicide"' from Joy in Repetition was 'Live music from a band plays a song called "Souls Sucked on the Other Side"'. I still hope that a song will leak with that name...

In Kiss, I'm still convinced he's saying "my love, will be your FOOL", though some lyric sites say "Food".

.

I realize "food" is a better rhyme with "atittude" but "Fool" makes more sense. It's an expression.

I used to think in 'All the Critics...' Prince was singing "It's time for a nude erection, it's time you have to die".
