Lyrics You Got Wrong? In "The Truth" Prince sings, "What if half the things ever said turned out to be a lie?"
Up until very recently I thought the line was "What if half the things I said turned out to be a lie."
And with what has transpired it suddenly seemed so self aware.
But, now I read the lyrics - he wasn't talking about himself telling lies, but merely others.
Just not the same.
My heart broke a little when I saw the correct lyrics.
And y'all? | |

I've wondered for a long time if the last line of "Sometimes it Snows in April" says/means "passed" rather than "past" -- it makes more sense to me: "Love it isn't love until it's passed".." Anyone have an ultra official lyric sheet? “Nobody wants to read my Prince think piece” https://medium.com/@mary_beaulieu

Here's a goody! First few times I heard Controversy on the radio...couldn't catch the name of the song:

Laugh away! So did my group of friends at the time when we were together and the song came on and I merrily sang along with it. Style is the second cousin to class

Back in the 90s, after The Hits/The B-Sides came out, I was playing one of the cassettes in my friend's car. We had her two kids in the backseat. They were 4 and 5 years old. "Controversy" was playing. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

That's the way it's written in The Ultimate Listening-Retrospect, a 319 page collection of lyrics from his official releases from 1978-2015. I find that they are pretty good compared to some of the others (and compared to the online lyric sites) Gimme some horns ... uh!

In TMBGITW, I used to think instead of "but when I do I see U and I'm devoured" that he was saying "but when I do I see U 9 to 5"
Also, in Nothing Compares 2 U for the longest time I thought it was "like a bird without a love song" instead of just "without a song" [Edited 9/21/16 16:55pm] We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. . .

Knowing Prince, maybe he just threw one 'count your blessings' in there! You funny.

Maybe he put it in as a subconscious message and you got it! I love you baby, just not like I love this guitar.~Prince~

I also misheard that line, but as "made with surf and jam". Obviously my version is quite nonsensical but to my mind it fitted the dreamlike and slightly surreal lyrics of the song quite well, I also thought it made sense given that it continued the sea theme from the titular starfish. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

That's classic!
In the 80s, I never got that he was saying "elevator" in Let's Go Crazy. I never really knew what he was saying until much later. I just mumbled through that part when I was singing along. Oh and the purple banana. Didn't catch that either way back when.

One of the videos I found awhile ago must have bee translated by a non-English speaker because the line "I know you ain't no concubine", which is onscreen in the official video, was translated as "I know you ain't no pumpkin pie".

Actually, I not only heard him sing "past" with my own ears in concert, but if you Google his P&M tours you can hear him clearly sing "past", which would be correct grammar as well.

Doesn't he say both? I feel like I've heard him say both (at different times). [Edited 9/21/16 21:01pm]
