It gives the sound that winding effect, as though it's winding up for a measure and then winding back down. You can hear it in the drums on "Erotic City", the guitar on "17 days", the high hat and finger cymbal on "She's Always in My Hair" and the guitar on "Screams of Passion."

From my very basic knowledge, it sounds like the same sound being play simultaneously with a slight delay. The overlapping of the two sounds gives it a kind of metalic sound that "winds up" and "winds down" (if that makes any sense) or a kind of slow whooshing effect.

I have seen it also called a "chorus flanger."

Is it the sound at the start of both 'Sex Shooter' and 'She's always in my hair'?
It keeps rising and falling and has a very tch-tch type sound if you know what i mean!

He doesn't even know himself! Gainsbourg likes to throw with these kinds of terms to make him look good. He's a pretentious duckwit who in his heart wants to scream out "I'M A MUSICIAN PEOPLE...I KNOW THESE THINGS...AND YOU DONT!

Yup that's it. I actually really like all the songs where he used the effect, partly because for the longest I didn't know what it was, how to describe it, what caused it... just that there was this rising and falling.

Wasn't til I was playing around with Soundforge effects and applied the flanger effect and BINGO! that was it.

I love that sound. In fact I love all of Prince's drum sounds from this era.
Come to think of it, my all-time favourite Prince moments are:
1)Keyboard hooks on Second Verse of 'Sex Shooter'
2)Chord on 'Sex Shooter' intro
3)Synth Riff on 'Sex Shooter'
4)Drum loop on intro of 'Sex Shooter' (This sounds amazing on the extended version, if you've seen the video)

The Very end Of
Solo.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

BINGO!

While, I'm here I'll add some of my own:

The keyboard climax at the end of "Sensual Everafter"
The "This ones for..." bit in "Lady Cab Driver"
All of "Strange But True" but in particular at 3:01 and 3:20
The "Glam Sla-ee-aa-ee-aa-ee..." bit in "Glam Slam"
The "Drummer, Drummer" bit in "Play In The Sunshine"

and there's heaps more that don't come straight to mind

The "This ones for..." bit in "Lady Cab Driver"

That bit's crazy isn't it?? It's much more controverial than 'Darling Nikki' or anything on 'Dirty Mind'. It's a very taboo subject matter, that probably only Prince would breach.

Nice list, Gainsbourg.

I think the strings in Raspberry Beret once drove me into that oath to spend all my money + spare time on that little guy from Minneapolis for the next 25 years.

(so I'll be free in 2010 !!!)

Great list NuPwrSoul - especially the 'pink cashmere' and 'exodus has begun' points

But I can't help but cringe during the 'I'm willin, I'm willin, etc' part of 'nothing compare 2u' on ONA Live - I like the rest of the performance but that bit just doesn't sound right to me!

I'd also add;

adore - 'well maybe not the ride'
big white mansion - ' I could use a new guitar - dow dow!'
face down - bass solo on nyc live tape
head - finks solo
sshhh - michaels solos
controversy - squidgy keyboards
There's too many...

What do you mean exactly? The synth sting after every line in the verse or the melody of the middle eight 'Do i belive in god?'
