Think about tunes written in or around 88 though. They were all pretty straightforward. The Batman stuff, Rave, If I Had A Harem, People Without..... all pretty basic.

Not sure I agree. The Future and People Without are not basic. Both rather out of left field imo.

When I think of 88, I think of Lovesexy, but I guess he did do plenty of straightforward stuff that year as well.

How is it complex then? Maybe we just have different ways of describing things. There's nothing musically complex about The Future.... it has pretty much the same beat throughout the song with some synth flourishes on top. Very little melody, monotone lyrics. People Without.... improvised lyrics, basic funk/blues groove. Rave.... basic electronic drum pattern, sparse production, synth flourishes/stabs. If I Had A Harem.... a basic blues song (live), and even more basic song studio.

i mean, it's not like the album from a certain era totally defines what prince recorded
at such a time. the man was way too diverse for that. sessions roughly shared a kind
of overall sound, but beyond that he must have always just recorded what he heard
in his head, whatever flowed from him in the studio and what inspired him. and that
would not have bent to a certain album in progress aesthetic per se.

Just had a listen now, and yeah this is brilliant, it's crazy that a track which I don't think I've ever even heard of before can just appear out of nowhere and blow you away like that, makes me hopeful that there's still a lot of brilliant stuff in the vault which is still waiting to be discovered by the fans.

I think of it in 2 mindsets. THe first, being the lighter material like Lovesaxy or Cool Love and the second being the darker stuff like what was intended for Rave Un2.
