Beautiful Strange is a bit of a masterpiece (sabotaged by Prince)

Not sure why this song is so hard to find. I finally was able to download a version of it (using Tidal.com) from Joy {In2} the Joy Fantastic. (Really, Prince, up there in the heavens, you had to bury it in an alternate version of the album?".

Its not even the version I fell in love with on youtube (with Prince entirely playing), but it is still a great version.

Also, I found a live version that blew my socks off.

Why did he bury some of his best music? Empty Room is also nearly impossible to find (I only know the version from MOntreux).

UGH...I don't get it.

Back to Beautiful Strange...I like that it is about the search for and mystery surrounding God rather than some simplistic sermon.

Amazing track indeed, and deserved a better release.

.

Btw, you can find Empty Room on Tidal as well (track 5 of C Note album).

With a little rougher production (think PR era) this would be a classic.

Some may consider this as one of Prince's "weirdest" songs but I think it's great. Loved it from the first time I heard it. Every time I hear it there is something about the way Prince half sings/half speaks the vocals, his guitar playing and the mood of this song that reminds me of his genius. I find it hard to understand Prince's decisions when it comes to releasing his work, so many good if not great songs never got released or were released in an untimely way or were released in a manner which never got them the attention that they deserve; oh well!....... sigh

The version on the album is a bit cleaned up. But the alternate version on youtube (its not the clip with Mel B) is 'rough". .

By the way, no offense, but in my opinion, the PR era is not the be-all, end-all of Prince. The 80's were a great period (and more consistent), but the later gems in some ways were more impressive because they are not as hyped or immediately recognized and he kept them coming anyway..

Reportedly, BS was the title track of an unreleased 1998 album: http://princevault.com/in...ul_Strange

Hopefully the whole album was finished and will be unearthed eventually, but this may explain why the song itself enjoyed a limited release.

The version on Rave is the second to be released, a first mix was made available on the Beautiful Strange video album, which itself was only available in VHS (and which is a live show, not the studio album I was talking about above).

although i like the Rave In2 version of the song, the one on the beautiful strange tape is really
the better version. it's endlessly fascinating. i must have heard it hundreds of times and it's a
stand out everytime it comes up on shuffle or otherwise. that version would fit well on an album
together with tracks like 'madrid 2 chicago' and 'breathe' i guess.

Not saying it was for every style he touched. But for that psych-rock sound, the PR stuff to me has the best production (followed closely by Lotusflower)

God knows if and if so, to which extent the M2C and BS albums were connected, both having been recorded and assembled more or less at the same time. M2C is one of the thing from the vault I most wanna hear, given how I dig the 2 trax from it that we have nod

finally someone who also wants to hear one of the later unreleased albums.

they intrigue me, albums like "madrid 2 chicago". i really, really hope that
prince compiled some of those albums and filed them away for the future,
like he mentioned sometimes.

One of the last truly great tracks he did, and one of the only listenable tracks on Rave In2.

It stays with me. Sometimes just popping up in my mind. A dreaminess that permeates in a lasting way.

Dope track! A latter day classic. The original version is the best, but the remix of Rave In2 isn't bad with the extra guitar on top.
Keep your headphones on.

There's also a live version of BS floating around, audio only performed live at PP 2002. Love the sexy "goodnight" at the end and guitar and crowd cheering.
