Carmen On Top is an unreleased song recorded on 9 March, 1991 at Larrabee Sound Studios, West Hollywood, CA, USA (three days before Simp The Pimp) for Carmen Electra's first album, which was planned to be called On Top. It was included as the second track on a configuration compiled on 15 June, 1992. The track was credited as written by Carmen Electra on the credits printed for this configuration of the album, and contains a vocal sample from funk bassist and singer Bootsy Collins. The song was ultimately rejected from the album, however, and the album was renamed Carmen Electra. In mid-September, 1993, the song was tried out during early sessions for Mayte's first album Child Of The Sun at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, and may have been renamed Mayte On Top, although the song may have been used only to determine appropriate song styles for Mayte and the lyrics may not have been reworked; details of her version are not known.

Segue [# 2] is the eleventh track on Carmen Electra's first and only studio album Carmen Electra. It is a musical introduction to the album's next track, All That, containing a saxophone solo by Eric Leeds and some synth tones.

I like Go Go Dancer and Everybody Get on Up. I mean she tried lol but I heard worst from today's artists. I like her better as a brunette.

Retroactively, I wonder if this project didn't hurt Prince's career more than anything else. Prince, for once, eally wanted to score a hit (most PP albums he didn't care) and when it flopped, he put the blame on WB (alongside blaming them for not selling as much as he anticipated). WB, somehow, had shown some good will in playing along even though I fail to see how WB execs could possibly imagine they could actually manage to sell this to the masses. Prince's fuss and the project's commercial flop was certainly the main reason why WB decided to reject Gold Nigga and 24, and ultimately shut down the label (I guess they could cope with it being what it was as long as they didn't get shouted at or held responsible for its low sales).

Thankfully no one in the general public knew about that album, or heard it (at least in France, IDK if it was promoted a bit more in the US or UK?) but I remember at the time that music critics and record store personnel, who had listened to it because it was their job, were highly critical of it and saw it as a clear sign of Prince having lost his brilliance. Heck, even me, being only 16 and a highly enthusiastic fan, was very much WTF? when I first heard it. I had been teased by the D&P Tour screen messages and hoped for something really cool, and you should have seen my face cringe when hearing Go Go Dancer and Fantasia Erotica for the first time, on that tragic day I purchased the record.

In the end it wasn't that bad. I mean it was bad, and certainly really bad by Prince's standards, but there's some real cool stuff on it. But the "dance" tracks, stupid lyrics and Carmen's lame rapping ruin it as a whole.

Still, I'll certainly buy the Carmen Electra deluxe remastered box set with outtakes and early configurations when it gets released to commemorate the album's 100 years anniversary in 2092.

Interestingly, the video promotional kit for the album shows that many more promo videos were shot for the album than were released. I hope those are made public at some point (with the remastered deluxe boxset, no doubt )

You got me wondering until I read that last bit at the very end. I completely relate to all of that, and yet, to be fair, I have heard far worse on the radio before. Though listening to it now, makes me realise it was very much steeped in that early nineties clubby sounds that I wasn't a big fan of either at the time. So yes, I too will happily wait for this album's 100th year anniversary lol.

Now a major issue IMHO is the 'dance' tracks (Go Go, Fantasia, Judy, This Is My World). The hip-hop/funk tracks are pretty groovy, and I can forgive and forget Carmen's presence on them. But those pseudo techno dance tracks really ruin the whole thing. Prince never, ever understood electronica, he completely missed that train and most of his attempts at it were disasters. Take those 4 tracks out and u've got a pretty decent record on your hands. Nothing that could have scored a hit. Nothing to justify much critical praise. But enjoyable for a Prince fan.

I agree. Whenever Prince tried to 'fit the mold', it didn't work very well.

Segue [# 3] is the 13th track on Carmen Electra's first and only studio album Carmen Electra. It is a brief staged news report commenting on the Valdez, AK, oil spill, and the resulting efforts by environmentalists to slow down plans for oil drilling in the area.

The news report acts as an introduction to the environmentally-themed final song of the album, This Is My House.
