Let's express our love for Prince's "Positivity" cut from the "Lovesexy" album

"Positivity" is a song by Prince that does not get the "props" it deserves.

What does everyone think of this cut off one of his best albums ever "Lovesexy"?

The powerful lyrics.

The passion in his vocals.

The driving beat.

The beautiful background vocals.

It's an awesome track that need to be lifted up as another one of Prince's best.

in my all time top 20, i think. (there's just so many great songs though, lol).

from the intro, to the backing vocals by boni, to atlanta and eric, to the 'rap',
to the choir, to the guitar, to the spoken spooky electric part, to the outro.

this song is fantastic, every single second of it. it gets far too little love round
here. i don't understand why. it's an absolute diamond of a gem.

it's also one of the songs i was totally hoping he would one day just bust out
again on stage. no warning, just that beat (like when they did it live in 88 at
the warfield) and his new guitarplaying madness laid over the top of it.

sigh

Wow.

It's refreshing to see that there are others who think it's an amazing song.

Why do you think that it's not lifted up as one of his best around here?

It's definitely one of his very best ever.

Imagine if he would of performed it often. Do you think it's possible that he knew that his fams/fans and general public would never express their appreciation for it and therefore he opted not to include it on his concert setlist?

i don't think prince really cared about that, if he felt strong enough about a song.
so he must have had other reasons for not performing it anymore after 88/89. it
might be that he felt it didn't come across or work well enough in a live setting.
who knows. i still think he would have come round to it again one day, if he'd've
had more time.

not sure why people around here don't seem to like it that much. but i'm sure
some of them will voice their reasons before long lol

an

(yes)

Recently discovered a live aftershow version - I think it's San Francisco or Oakland but it sounded awesome live. I slept on it a long time before I was into it when it first came out but grew to really love it. It's such a beautiful bookend to an album that is probably my most loved recording by anyone ever. To me it's a song only Prince could have created, could anyone else cover it without sounding absurd?

It had never really occured to me that Positivity doesn't get much love around the org. I'm probably a bit blinkered at times but I always assume that with a great song such as this, that every Prince fan surely sees how awesome it is. Of course that's not the case when you're dealing with an artist with such a huge array of styles in his enormous catalogue, and because of that fans with widely differing tastes.

I don't think I've ever made a Prince playlist that didn't have Positivity in it. As others have said, that last couple of minutes are amazing and bring one of his finest albums to a fitting close. There was more going on in that one song than many artists manage to put in to a whole album of generic muzak.

Love the album, love this song! I even enjoy the part where it sounds like he is chewing gum. I saw a thread about it once and apparently some think it's kind of gross but I find it soothing for some reason. Maybe like an asmr kind of thing going on lol. smile But yes, a GREAT song, one of my favorites on the album and the album is in my top 5, so. . .

One of the best cuts on the album. The lyrics hold up to this day. Would love to get in perfect quality the outtake with the "love is the key' rap.

"I like to watch."

ASMR? Fuck, I never looked at it that way. I'm sure Prince could have turned those four letters into something sexy!

The "Lovesexy" album is excellent.

Wonder why he rarely performed "Positivity" during the Lovesexy tour.

Love this track especially the bridge/closing part. Not sure why it gets dissed so much around here. This one and "Dance On" too. The back end "Side 2" of Lovesexy is amazing.

Always thought it would be a good acoustic number and wished he'd played it live. Did he ever play this one live?

EDIT:

Apparently so. Yes he did. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song. Always used to piss me off that I had to FF the whole CD to get to it.

For some reason songs from Lovesexy have been almost absent from Prince concerts from that time after. Not even I Wish U Heaven. He played a hillybillyish Alphabet St during ONA that was fun. But in general this albums songs are absent.

I've always loved it. I love songs that you have to sit back and listen and be a bit patient.

Positivity, Condition of the Heart, Crystal Ball, full version of Computer Blue etc

It's surprising that he opted not to perform "Positivity" during most of the Lovesexy tour though. Most songs from the album were performed.

I agree, he did it very stripped down versions on some Aftershows.

I Wish U Heaven though never sounded well on the shows. It almost sounded like they were playing the recording and playing over it.

On the hits driven Lovesexy tour I don't think he would have had the patients to work the song out.
Maybe if he did some smaller shows like the concerts before and just featured the Lovesexy album/bside music, he might have.

yes Always loved the song, some intriguing lyrics though...

"In every man's life there will be a hang-up
A whirlwind designed 2 slow U down
It cuts like a knife and tries 2 get in U
This Spooky Electric sound
Give up if U want 2 and all is lost
Spooky Electric will be your boss"

Call People magazine, Rolling Stone
Call your next of kin, cuz your ass is gone
He's got a 57 mag with the price tag still on the side
Cuzzin' when Spooky say dead, U better say died
Or U can fly high right by Spooky and all that he crawls 4
Spooky and all that he crawls 4

Don't kiss the beast
We need love & honesty, peace & harmony
Positivity
Love & honesty, peace & harmony
I said, hold on 2 your soul, U got a long way 2 go

sho' nuff, sho' nuff, sho' nuff

Don't kiss the beast
Be superior at least
