THe best and worst periods (in terms of clothes/makeup) for Prince

My favorites...all of the 80's (especially the Sign of the times Hippie look and the 1999 Purple punk/pirate look.) The Greatest Romance that's ever been sold look was quite handsome, and the Musicology/3121...nonsymnetrical zoot suit look was super cute.

Least favorites...the demented elf in figure skater uniforms, ridiculous facial hair, and powderly makeup (around 1993, see below) and a few of the times around 2010 when he was made to look way too effeminate.

On the fence...last three years, I actually kind of like the flashy Jimi Hendricks glam rock/hippie combo (maybe if he had a bit more weight, was less photoshopped, kept his fro a bit more managed, and used a bit less eye liner, it would have worked better. ) In other words, the shorter fro/gypsy look from around 2013 was cool.

Diamonds and Pearls--his face was gorgeous (although his hair was a bit too coiffed), and even with the the lighter hair, he was quite pretty in the Gold video..I just hated the "Slave" shit written on his face. Emancipation was a good look but a bit dull.

Without a doubt, my absolute least favorite look of prince's in pix below... He actually just looks ugly.

Anyone else agree that this is Prince at his least attractive?

I couldn't disagree more. I love hours look in both of the pictures that you posted...whereas the "Greatest Romance..." look was quite unattractive, IMO.

Agree -- HATED that hairstyle with the curls stuck to his cheek. Between the head hair, facial hair, matador/figure skater outfits, weird pale makeup -- and, ugg, the gun microphone -- just WAAAYYY to much going on, all of it confusing and none of it attractive. (Also, in general, I don't really like him in yellow, a color he favored in early-mid 1990s).

My favorite look was Dirty Mind-era, when he still seemed kind of rough and sweaty and thrown together. Also like SOTT hippie look, and his 2004-ish tailored suits were pretty sharp.

And while some of his Lovesexy-era looks were fun, a few were, uuhhh...

I'm all for androgyny and gender-fuckery, but he occasionally looked like he raided the Golden Girls' closet, like here:

His clothes were sometimes fugly but his hair and face were literally beautiful (and he used minimal makeup). Gorgeous for the most part. I kind of liked when he had his hair tied back in a bow like a late 18th century composer or someone. Or just like these pictures.

His most recent look, with the Afro and loose clothes: not attractive at all to me. When I think of Prince, I think polished, elegant, class. Best time? 2004!

Agree, the trying to be white, blood drained out kate Moss cocaine I have just walked out of Auschwitz look was not him. This look is dreadful (c. late 1993 to 1995)

.

Also bad is the ridiculous look he had around Rave era with the long hair and the blue plastic suit (1999 - 2000) so new age douchebag look.

His best look was the Controversy into 1999 era look, so later 1981 and most of 1982, before his hair got all flounced out. At the time he was most erotic acting and writing his sexiest stuff.

He was just all about sex at the time and was super funky as well. He was doing Vanity, Susannah Moonsie, Jill and probably several other ladies too. He was on the edge of mega stardom and was just primed for success. The 8 year old in fancy dress look (Sleazy butler) and then the beginnings of the purple trench coat, he was the more X rated MJ lookalike but with style all of his own and a very naughty boy.

Its funny because during the RAVE period IMO< he had good looks and bad looks. But I agree those little paper braids etc were horrible..(all the pix you provided in fact).

I know the long hair look is popular, Nude tour era he looked amazing. Then D&P era he looked healthy and flawless. Mid 90s not so great, the white face. From 2000 onwards he looked good in his suits and short hair. I forgot Parade ..he looked great too. One of his most iconic looks is this pic I can't find where he just looked Sooooo..Prince.

Found it

93/94 and 2000 are the worst for me. The hair was awful and I hated the makeup that made him look morbid.

I prefer the 2010/2011 era.

BEST: Rave, with Lovesexy a close second (Lovesexy clothes were better & tighter, but that BEARD puts Rave over the top)

WORST: I guess we call them "the pixie years" of the Mayte era, when the makeup was too pale & the facial hair was too pencil thin

But let's face it - he's looked pretty amazing his entire career exclaim biggrin
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Best 1999- Purple Rain. I like the curls on him. Braids not so much. But really, I don't care how he did his hair and makeup or what hes wearing, I love the soul inside his eyes . Prince was beautiful all tHe way through. And another truth, If he was 80, I would still think he's hot. fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv fallinluv
I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

My absolute favorite look/era is Rave. I have read some of the funniest critiques/descriptions of that look on here but I can't help it, I am a fool for Rave era Prince. My other faves are Parade and his most recent look. Sure, there have been some here and there along the way I wasn't especially fond of but none I really disliked too strongly. Always beautiful!

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. . .

^ Yeah that right there!

I also loved his look from Controversy- Purple Rain as well. He was hotness in his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2004, and his Somewhere Here on Earth video in 2007. There was just a sense of maturity and growth- very sexy.

I didn't care for the long hair Lovesexy era look, the Coolio pixie/dreads of the Rave era, or the'fro he was sporting in the last few years.

Absolute worst era was 94-95. Like others said it was the pale makeup, too much eye liner, slave written on his face, bad pencil thin beard and short hairdo that did not work like it did in 85-86. Not to mention it was when he stopped playing his clouds and instead started played that goddy looking gold symbol guitar that looked extra big on him with his thinner look.
Musically it was also my least favorite time for him. Focus was more on the name change than anything else. Absolutely hated that era.

My favorite will always be Batman-Grafitti Bridge era Prince, he looked like such a rock star in this era which is how I think of him. Calling Prince a pop star is kind of an insult IMO.

The 89/90 period was nice, whereas teh Rave was dreadful, but looking at all the Rave era shots you guys have uploaded. I think Prince was having a mid life crisis. That was when he was turning 40 and he wanted to still look young and relevant.

Notice how flawless his skin looks in that last shot and how he has glossed his lips to suggests youth and prettied himself up. It is obvious he does not want to look or be in his 40s, but be 21 forever.

The sound of the album and NPS also has that youthful party feel. It's sad as it 1. Backfired and 2. He still looked incredible anyway without the trying, the brother was always going to age well and defy his calendar age. TRC era he dropped this youthful look and just became more natural. As sad as the album was, he dropped this sex and dancing shit of the late 90s for the more full bodied, jazzique and funk pop sound we had up to his death, that was more belying of someone his age and status.

Yup. I would have still been attracted to him in his 80's, I'm sure. Lol. I loved him in most of his phases. Didn't love the slave on the face era or some of the years when he looked too thin, only because I wanted him to eat and be healthy and happy. He didn't look happy to me when he was so thin. I used to think my favorite era of him was in the 80's. It still hold a dare place in my heart but now I think that it was just due my teenage idol nostalgia. I'm really into his Dirty Mind, Controversy, UTCM, LoveSexy, GB, Rave and late 2000 after mani phase. He was fine as hell in his late 40's early 50's! He was wearing a lot of sunglasses then. Man, he was cool as a cucumber.
