Has anyone heard any news about the memoir? I wonder what's going to happen to it. I know he had only completed the first 50 pages or so. Also I'm not sure why he was only writing up untill 2007 and his Superbowl performance. Anyway..I was looking forward to reading it.. But it was not meant to be.. Baby, you're a star.

I work in the publishing industry, and we were close to buying it. I understand that the contract with the publisher was never signed, so the 50 pages and anything else he had intended for it remain part of his estate and will be determined upon by whoever administers and looks after it. Certainly, no likelihood of it seeing the bookshelves anytime soon.

This makes it sound like it was never "official'. I'm surprised.. Baby, you're a star.

Spiegel & Grau Executive Editor Chris Jackson is obviously ecstatic about the book. “Prince is a towering figure in global culture and his music has been the soundtrack for untold numbers of people — including me — for more than a generation; his creative genius has provided the musical landscape of our lives. Millions of words have been written about Prince — books and articles, essays and criticism — but we’re thrilled to be publishing Prince’s powerful reflections on his own life in his own incandescently vivid, witty, and poetic voice.” Baby, you're a star.

It was all official, contract not fully signed before P passed away, so I understand.

. Fifty pages is actually quite a bit if handwritten. If typed out, even more. Of course, it could be drawings, hieroglyphics, and poetry, also. . He was writing about his life up to and including the Super Bowl appearance (which he must have seen as his major triumph).
His "purple notebooks" would contain enough to fill in gaps, if needed, to make a full volume. He was also into photography, so some of that could be included, too.
I'm sure it will be seen but it will also need to be carefully edited by someone who cares.
Expect something released around a holiday or other notable event. It's something that everyone knows would sell. . Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Yeah...no. Handwriting takes up WAY more space than typed characters. Typed up, there's probably a half to two-thirds as much content. Once edited, even less. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I agree. He wrote enough, I think there would be enough for a book that is "in his own words." I think it also might be interesting to include some articles from publications like Rolling Stones and speeches (e.g. from the Rock & Roll HOF and from live performances). It's unclear if any of the plans for Prince's memoir will change. Random House and ICM Partners, which represented Prince in the book deal, told The Hollywood Reporter they are not commenting at this time. ICM's Esther Newberg told The Wall Street Journal last month that Prince already had turned in the first 50 pages — if he had been recording his memories for Piepenbring to fashion into text (a common tactic for celebrity memoirs), then it is possible that more hours of tape exist to extend his story beyond those 50 pages. But if Prince was writing a draft from scratch, there might be less material for Piepenbring to work with. The writer did not return a request for comment. What's certain is that any eventual output related to the original project will certainly draw even more attention now, as it will stand as the last authorized biography of the legendary artist. Publisher Judith Regan (who is not affiliated with the deal) said that if she were involved with the project, she'd push to bring the book out as soon as possible. [Edited 8/2/16 11:14am]

In such a case, they'd have to wait till estate stuff is settled. That'd be so nice

I wonder how far those notebooks go back and if he kept all of them. He preserved his music in the vault but we don't know if he saved his notebooks and hand written lyrics, I hope so. The problem is somebody else will have to decide what Prince did and didn't want included in his memoir. It that sense it can't be a memoir but just a biography..apart from the completed pages of course. Baby, you're a star.

. Not really. Bremer Trust has been licensing things, paying bills, signing contracts all along. The thing is, the value of the memoir is part of the value of the estate -- and that all has to be figured out before final settlement of the tax bill. . True, although seeing as it's not yet complete, time will tell.

50 pages is not enough to publish an autobiography. A brief memoir in article form might be possible. Springsteen is about to publish a 528 page autobiography this fall but he worked on that for seven years... an artist's early years before they become famous are the most interesting part of a biography to me, so if he was writing chronologically, that would be an awesome 50 pages flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

PurpleMapleSyrup, That's a really insightful thought you have. I never made any connection between the title and it being about the people in his life, but it makes a lot of sense. My guess is that someone at the publishing company might know about Prince's reason for choosing "The Beautiful Ones" as the title.
