Sorry, French on my brain - Prince had some bomb shows there too. He really took care of his European fans. Festival held in Switzerland. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

Hmm...if I had to choose I think some of the 2011 North Sea Jazz performances were better than 2009 Montreux. Paisley Park is in your heart

Someone remind us about the 2007 show and is there a soundboard of it?

For me, only way to compare 09 with 13 is go by facts. Prince plays guitar on both shows in 09 and played the hell out of it. On the 2013 shows it's my understanding Prince didn't touch an instrument until night 3. So for me, that leaves 1 show worth talking about in 13. It was a terrific set, but the 09 shows had a far better group of musicians with far more range. If it wasn't for the 84 Birthday show, this 09 set would be my favorite of all time. Would love a soundboard of North Sea on day though.

I'm like most of you in that I think both are equally as good. But, if I had to pick the best 2009 show vs. the best 2013 show I would have to give the nod to 2009 because he showed all of his musicianship in one show. He was a band leader, vocalist, expert guitar player, obscure songs, hits, etc. The 2013 shows collectively showed all of those traits. I actually like the first two shows a lot where he was more of a band leader and I love the horns. We are all lucky to have had both of these shows captured in great audio and video quality. I with we had the same for North Sea and 2007 Montreaux.

The question should be betwen the 2007, 2009, & 2013 shows. Then again, there's no footage of the 2007 show that I am aware of, but I have listened to it and really loved Girls and Boys. Love is God,

2009 for me. | |

I was lucky enough to attend all Montreux shows and for me night 3 in 2013 was the best one. I'm more rock oriented and to see Prince play the guitar for the whole set and for mostly rock-oriented songs was definitively the show I wanted to see once in my life from him. However, if I had to pick one song from the Montreux shows, Empty room in 2009 wins easily. What you see on YouTube is great, but you don't hear the reaction of the crowd during the guitar solo. Everyone felt that something special happened during this solo. This version of Empty room is the best version by far and Empty room is already a great song in studio, but that night he was on fire during that solo, I will never forget. But as always with Prince, what is really interesting when you compare these shows is that they are completely different one from the other (ok, show 1 and 2 have got some songs repeated but they happened the same night). I know no one else that can play 3 nights in a row with 3 different set lists like this and all shows are great. We are all going to miss that a lot.

He did play the cowbell. Point taken - the three shows really were a series meant to build one from the next with the third and final rock show bringing the house down. I found myself on nights 1&2 wishing he had played, but also fascinated by the fact that he was clearly experimenting with styles and performances again, which was thrilling to witness live.

2009 highlights were Lay My Hands on You, Empty Room and Large Room with No Light. 2013 Highlights were Love We Make, When We're Dancing Close & Slow, and Big City. But I am leaving so much out. I agree that the 1984 Birthday Show is of the same ilk. Legendary.
