Why Purple? Has Prince ever discussed why he chose Purple? Has any reporter ever asked him? I have read/seen many interviews and no one ever asked him this question. It is like Purple and Prince were a given.

Yes, it is, but I wanted to hear Prince's reasoning behind it. I wanted to hear the back story...if there even was one.

Team color. I forgot where I got that information, but it's tied to Minnesota. [Edited 6/13/16 20:58pm]

I read in an article that it traces back to his grade school years back in the early 60's. There was a popular game at the time called "color the chicken", and kids would close their eyes and randomly pick a color from a crayon box. He chose purple and really liked it. It stuck with him the rest of his life.

If your name was Prince, wouldn't you pick the royal color, too. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

It was a very Prince answer lol. I don't want to qoute it because I can't exactly remember what he said word for word. He said something about " red, blue, and the sky." Ugh I wish I could remember....it was years ago. Does anyone have this interview saved? Since you wanted to find his exact words on it, it may be a good read for you. I'm sorry, I don't have the interview. It might be good to read if you can find it though. <3

I always perceived hin using it because of a few reasons. One for its royalty connections, another due to him just liking it and three because it's a spiritual colour. Lots of heavy connections with spirituality lie within purple. Just look at a chart of the chakras and you'll see that the third eye and crown chakras are purple and lavender respectively.

The Minnesota Vikings football team color is purple and he always loved and supported the local professional sports teams - specifically football and basketball (both the male and female pro teams). It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I read (not sure who said it, though) that purple was a blend of his masculine (blue) and feminine (pink) sides.

Read that somewhere the Minnesota Vikings was the seed....going back before he splased the Vikings were known as " The Purple People Eaters" or something like that.

So maybe it was a Combination of all these.

I read something along these lines in regard to purple rain. Not the song, but colour of the rain: That purple is the colour you get if you mix the blue of the water and the red of blood. Referring to Doomsday or something like that.
I actually think he just liked the colour and wanted to be cryptic. LOL It's my favourite colour too, dating back well before Prince even began performing. I had a lovely dress in that exact colour when I was a young girl. He just had good taste that's all,. [Edited 6/14/16 1:48am]

'cause Purple Music does the same to the brain as reefer and cocaine.
I just wondered the same question two days ago and came up that Purple Music might be one of the oldest Prince references to purple? Wasn't that song from Controversy area?

Of course Prince also referenced 'purple' back in 1982 in the song 1999 - two years before his purple reign blew up in '84. Prince: "When there’s blood in the sky - red and blue = purple.. purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain..."

I agree with most of the points so far on this, but felt the need to add that he must have dug the music and words of Jimi Hendrix's song 'Purple Haze' and that this song may also be a reason for his identifying with purple.
I think mainly he just dug that colour and liked the royal connotations it has had historically.

So many different answers from everyone claiming to know the purple origin, lol.
I asked if he was ever directly and answered directly. I guess he did kind of in that quote provided, but as someone mentioned he was using purple before Purple Rain.
Since it is such a signature of his, I am surprised this was not asked by journalists left and right. No one delved into the throught process of where the purple came from. I'm sure we can all guess, but we don't know for sure. Prince was never asked to discet his lyrics or the meaning behind what he did as much as other artist, like say the Beatles. Maybe journalists did ask him but he refused to answer. Who knows. Just another thing that adds to his mystique.
