Sure, Prince liked his sports but I really don't think his interest in purple is because of a local football team!

I wish I remembered where I got it from, it was somewhere since all this mess and it made a lot of sense what was said, because I hadn't even thought of it before I just assumed it was because his name was Prince. I'm thinking I got it from the Ebony panel that was posted here in April, whoever the authors were on that panel. I'll look it up later.

Of course Prince also referenced 'purple' back in 1982 in the song 1999 - two years before his purple reign blew up in '84.

His use of purple goes much further back than that. One of Prince's first songs recorded 'Leaving For New York' includes the lyric: "Sitting here on the purple lawn."

I always perceived hin using it because of a few reasons. One for its royalty connections, another due to him just liking it and three because it's a spiritual colour. Lots of heavy connections with spirituality lie within purple. Just look at a chart of the chakras and you'll see that the third eye and crown chakras are purple and lavender respectively.

1. One for its royalty connections, (goes with purplethunder:"If your name was Prince, wouldn't you pick the royal color, too")

2. Another due to him just liking it

3. and three because it's a spiritual colour ( goes with angelsoncrack: "Lots of heavy connections with spirituality lie")

and

4. Minnesota Vikings color is purple

There was a popular game at the time called "color the chicken", and kids would close their eyes and randomly pick a color from a crayon box. He chose purple and really liked it. It stuck with him the rest of his life."

So maybe it was a Combination of all these.

So many different answers from everyone claiming to know the purple origin, lol.

I asked if he was ever directly and answered directly. I guess he did kind of in that quote provided, but as someone mentioned he was using purple before Purple Rain.

Since it is such a signature of his, I am surprised this was not asked by journalists left and right. No one delved into the throught process of where the purple came from. I'm sure we can all guess, but we don't know for sure. Prince was never asked to discet his lyrics or the meaning behind what he did as much as other artist, like say the Beatles. Maybe journalists did ask him but he refused to answer. Who knows. Just another thing that adds to his mystique.

No one is claiming to know lol. Just trying to help you out since you asked... And someone did give you a qoute as close to your answer as they could. Sorry if it isn't what you're looking for but maybe you aren't meant to know...Sometimes people look too hard and sometimes people don't look hard enough.

He said this about Purple Rain sometime in the 80's...

Fans have been trying to work out the meaning of "purple rain" for decades now. Some believe it’s about the end of the world, a theme Prince was interested in mid-80s. This quote from His Royal Badness suggests the apocalypse wasn’t far from his mind:

Prince: "When there’s blood in the sky - red and blue = purple.. purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain..."

A very Princey answer... haha

[Edited 6/14/16 6:27am]

He mentioned a "purple" lawn in "Leaving for NY," earlier than "1999."

Seems everyone here is pretty much right that purple is for the MN team, royalty/prince, but as for the song "purple rain," I'd also heard/read that about the red blood + blue sky = end of the world that you mention above...

That whole song seems to be about the end times, probably about the "latter rain" when the holy spirit would rain down (substituted "purple" for "latter").

Yes, I admitted as much...that we might never know...I stated that it is part of his mystique in my last post, maybe you missed it. And I also noted the quote that was provided confused

And, yes, everyone is chiming in with what they think is the root of the purple, but that is fine. I was looking more for direct quotes from Prince but everyone's answer with their own interpretiaton is just as interesting.

I always liked to believe that Prince choosing purple as his color had something to do with the guitar jam "Purple" that Shuggie Otis released on his classic 1971 album "Freedom Flight". But as Prince never mentioned anything about it or even Shuggie Otis in his lifetime, probably not.

But I sure can imagine Prince setting this jam on fire: https://www.youtube.com/w...tPGd1mJTw0

Purple has signified royalty for 1000's of years, so its completely natural that he chose purple given his name is Prince.

Color Purple - Violet

Purple is the color of good judgement. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind. Purple is a good color to use in meditation.

Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery, as well as royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color. Most children love the color purple. Purple is the color most favored by artists. Thursday's color is purple.

Crystal - Cure.com

Crown chakra - divine wisdom, our spirit, our oneness with the universe & enlightenment.

- symbol is the Lotus

- color is violet

Or maybe he just liked purple...

Just saw this today. They touch on the subject today, 0:55 into the clip. Pure guesses though...

I remember reading that interview where he talked about the red and blue, I know that I have it on paper somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

I thought he had mentioned it was the colours of the sky at dawn, and marking a new day. I wish I saw this question before watching half the interviews I did a few weeks back so I would have caught it and posted it but I have an awful memory so not sure which specifically it was in :/

You are so wrong, dude.

.

When Prince was growing up, his state had one of the two most popular football teams in our country - the Minnesota Vikings. They were then called "The Purple People Eaters." Now every kid who is a sports fan gravitates towards their local team. Even more so if that team is very popular and successful. Prince was around ten years old when The Purple People Eaters were the big deal in Minnesota. I guarantee you that young Prince had purple tee-shirts, purple jerseys, purple hats.....

.

One other thing, it isn't just Prince who is into purple. Go walk any street in Minnesota right now and you will see purple clothing everywhere. All because of the local football team.

.

This bullcrap about Prince choosing purple because of royalty or some psychological mumbo jumbo regarding the sky, meditation, magic and mystery is a lot of hilarious idiocy. The guy was into purple because of this:

I agree, I am kind of old, and I remember hearing that also, but it was like back in the day when he would stay up all night playing and writing while everyone else was out partying, Andre, Morris and the others, he knew it was time to sleep when the sun came up, The color of the sky at dawn is purple, Musicians are notorious night owls, its quiet and we can work, no phones, just silence, I think it meant a lot to him, he always could look at that color and remind himself of how it all started, jamming until the sun comes up, he used to say when the others finally woke up he already had a new groove waiting to kill em'

I agree with most of the points so far on this, but felt the need to add that he must have dug the music and words of Jimi Hendrix's song 'Purple Haze' and that this song may also be a reason for his identifying with purple.

I think mainly he just dug that colour and liked the royal connotations it has had historically.

My thoughts EXACTLY!
