Gotta strongly disagree here - after 'D & P' and its uber-mainstream poppiness, "My Name Is Prince" was a declarative statement of purpose that (I believe) was ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Classic album opener. And one of his mos SAVAGE vocals - honestly, my throat is sore just from LISTENING to this jam.

I am always happy to hear that anyone loves any Prince songs, even ones I don't especially care for. It's value to Prince's career I see differently. It was one of his first hip hoppish singles which seemed to copy the lame boasting prevalent of hip hop at that time. It was his least commercially successful first singles off an album since Controversy(SMF didn't really get the full radio push), and did very poorly on urban radio formats, so definitively did not re-rstablish any cred there. Moreover, it just made what followed seem even more ludicrous to some (e.g., my name is not Prince, it is love symbol, TAFKAP, and the Artist). I understand why he did the latter, but just think that On all counts it wasn't a career helper.

Like Shaq doing a rap stating that he is really tall. You need to see it within the context of the album: it is a fairy tale about a rock star named Prince who meets an exotic princess who has 3 chains of gold that the 7 bad guys (seven sins?) are after. My Name Is Prince is our hero introducing himself. Looking at it from that perspective, the opening track isn't unnecessary at all. Just like 3 Chains o' Gold (which I just said I don't like), it's part of the storyline.

Who knows, maybe he had planned the name change way earlier than we think and My Name Is Prince is him introducing this fictional character named Prince while he was already planning to become . That sounds like a very Princely thing to do. On the Act II tour in the summer of 1993 (after the name change) it was Mayte disguised as Prince (long coat, hat with chains) who "performed" My Name Is Prince. Then she dropped the coat and hat and Prince came on stage to sing Sexy MF... So he was just playing games with names again...

Unfortunately, as a single it failed to benefit from that context.

In the context of the very poorly-told story (what with the dropped spoken sections), then I would actually say the song is unnecessary.

It's not about the storyline or the context of the album. The music just sucks, the production is bad, and I also don't like his singing. He tries to sound aggressive and rough, be he fails imho. I can't take it serious, it's cringeworthy. And on top of that all, there's Tony M. rapping.
I love most of the album, but this is one of the worst songs of his career. I saw how this song emptied a full dancefloor in a big club here within seconds. And not because the crowd wasn't into prince. They played Kiss and When Doves Cry later that night, and the crowd loved it.

P taking on the Bomb Squad in the dense, superfunky, sample heavy production. Tony M just adds to the overall sense of mad grandiloquence

I didn't originally like My Name Is Prince, but as I re-discovered the 90-99 era - which I had kind of skipped at the time (I had found it a big shock to the system as I was still bathing fully in The Revolution atmosphere), a lot of the stuff I used to dislike have actually grown on me over the past few years, and I must say, I quite like this track now (still not too keen on Tony M rap though ). It is definitely "over the top" powerful but I think that Prince was using this style to reassert himself and mark his territory, a sort of declaration of independence. And in that respect, it feels good to hear it. It doesn't surprise me that it would empty a whole dance floor, its concept being too grand for a night club environment, rather the haunting chants and the heaviness of the music instantly gives me images of a big production Egyptian themed choreography, with hundreds of dancers and lots of spiritual symbolisms. It would make a fantastic flash mob music too. It's angry Prince at its best and it makes me feel like shouting "Go on Prince show them all!" - that is until Tony M turns up of course But that aside I love it!
