“If I need psychological evaluation, I’ll do it myself”

Prince states that he very rarely talks to the press as “If I need psychological evaluation, I’ll do it myself” and discusses a variety of other things in this article with The Guardian 23 June 2011.

Or of course he could just visit the Org.. cool

Nice article. I read it a while ago, but thanks for sharing it so I could read it again.

(Needed some more reflection on the burqa theme, but nothing a month or two in an Islamic country dressed as a woman couldn't fix for him...)

Hi CalhounSq

Yes you're right I reworded it. I'd agree the press part sounds like it's the "worst" part of his job! It's a nice interview in that they seem to capture a bit of his sense of humour smile

Yeah, I really like that too. Explains a lot. Although I'm sure he looked sizzling in a pair of dirty old jeans and a t-shirt. cool

I don't like his offhand burqa comments. Otherwise it's an ok interview. Also the Glastonbury comment is confusing because I thought he had been in talks for years according to the guy who runs that festival.

I think he explained that very well - that the festival is trying to use his name to sell tickets, but he ain't going there.

And re the burqa I am beginning to think that some of his more controversial comments should not be taken so literally to be how he saw the world. He went off about chemtrails too at one point, but he seemed to have these things he thought about very hard for a while and then discarded. Going back to what he firmly believed because it held up in the face of the thorough thought process that made him turn his back on other thoughts and ideas.

It's a natural part of being someone who reflects a lot on all kinds of things. His ramblings were just recorded on paper or video, making it seem much more important and permanent than when someone else does the same.

I understand, but if he had not said "people always have something to complain about," it wouldn't have made his comments seem so insensitive. It's a complex issues and I just don't think he should have weighed in on something he seems to know such little about.

He just didn't realize as a dude all the things that come with being a dude, even a Black dude. Women have a loooot of social expectations that don't exist for men. I'm sure being a man is difficult, but really?

A burqua, Prince? You wear one awhile and see if you love it. Probably you won't, because a burqua is basically to 'keep the men from lusting'. And that doesn't actually work, yo. biggrin

When he says tuff like that, you really do realize that Princeworld is the crazy.

The Burqa thing is why he didn't like doing interviews. I don't think Prince always conveyed his messages the way he wanted to. What he said and what he meant weren't always the same, and then he would think the press was twisting his words.

I get what he meant about the Burqas. Had nothing to do with women.

I think this is just part and parcel of his idea that if only he and his parents fit into this orderly box from the jump that he would have been perfectly happy and nothing bad would have happened. He either didn't think about it too deeply or has thought about it way too vividly in his fantasy mode.

I agree, and I got his point too. He of all people wouldn't have wanted to live in a place where all women were put in burqas, let's face it. LOL He stopped himself as it was plainly going in the wrong direction away from his point.

I've seen actors give interviews to various magazines to promote their newest movie . . . they're literally in a room with the reporters lined up outside. Imagine giving the same interview dozens of times in the same day? Same questions, same agenda. I imagine in that scenario it would be best to be the first interviewer . . .

In Prince's case, it was best to be an interviewer that he preferred or respected. Jon Bream for print, Leno/Smiley for TV, etc. And best if Prince controlled the setting, which is why he invited a lot of people to PP for interviews instead of going to their offices instead.

Junkets are terrible & boring for the actors. They have to work to make their answers sound fresh after 100 interviews. I can't blame them, suckiest part of the job... & yet, it's always in the contract that you have to promote, promote, promote. I imagine P did it only when necessary & on his terms.

Yeah, maybe. OTOH, maybe if had gotten out of fantasy land and into a world with other people, he might have had a better idea of WHY this kind of comment is simply not going to be acceptable. Good intentions are great, but it doesn't erase the outcome of what is essentially a very, VERY inflammatory statement from the standpoint of a woman for whome these kinds of things are seen as restrictive at best and downright terrifying at worst.

Burquas -- and the rules that go with it -- are why I won't visit places where they are expected. There's nothing freeing or comforting about them to me. No amount of explanation can get me to even consider it.

Don't get me wrong. I believe I understand what he meant, and that he didn't really find it okay to force women to wear burqas, but there is no question that this is a completely unacceptable comment to make.

He was indeed living in Prince world too long. But I genuinely believe that he meant well and had the best intentions. Things just didn't always come out as clever as they sounded in his head. cool
