Why all the love, after his death?

It seems all of America loved Prince, and were devastated by his death.

As a long time Prince fan, I call bullshit!

I don't remember this level of love during his life, record sales prove this.

It's known as grief poaching. Prince was well known enough that everyone could jump on the grief bandwagon even if they weren't a fan. You could spot them because they started their FB posts with "I loved Purple Rain". Now they are gone and I say good riddance.

All the outpouring of love for Prince is because, to quote Joni Mitchell, "you don't know what you've got til it's gone."

Sadly band wagon jumping when an artist passes isn't a new fad. I mean as an example when David Bowie passed away folks were saying they were big Bowie fans. However I think you do get an odd few who become genuine fans and due to their geographic location weren't able to be fans as the Music wasn't played on radio etc. Case in point, myself I'm a big Frank Zappa fan and have only got into Frank's music since he passed which was in 1993. Did I hear a Frank or a Mother's of Invention song before that point? Nope because they didn't play Frank Zappa on the radio and at the time my musical taste wouldn't have encompassed his music, now its a wide spectrum but back then anything outside of a R&B/Hip Hop realm wasn't on my radar. But back to Frank I knew of him from music books and such but didn't hear a song til later so I've been a fan for over about a decade or a little less. So my point being is because somebody isn't a superfan and they like just one Prince song we as a fan base or a fambase should try and get folks to think outside of the box and listen to more than just Purple Rain and the hits. I mean to a Zappa fanbase ID probably be seen as an outsider but to be honest that doesn't bother me as I like listening to Frank's music and hearing him talking about his music and he reminds me of Prince as he worked with artists outside of the Rock realm and his music can't really be classified into one genre you have doo wop vocal harmony, some elements of Punk mixed in, spoken word poetry, Rock, Heavy Rock, Classical, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Soul and he worked with guys like another newer favorite of mine George Duke too. So just because you get into an artist later it doesn't mean you can't love the music and another thing music is for everybody and you shouldn't really let anyone dictate what you should listen to because it falls outside of what as a consumer you should be listening too. Myself I like mostly every genre of music and I think it's because of artists like Prince and Frank that I learnt more about music than any class could teach you. Plus the monetisation and homogenising of radio means you'll never hear what you could call anything of real substance on mainstream radio today. So unless you search out the Music yourself you can't be too familiar with an artists work if they dont play their music videos or music on radio regularly. But thanks to the Internet in one way it's a great asset to an artist as I wouldn't have bought albums by Frank etc as I wouldn't know about his music outside of a story in a music magazine or in a music book. Yea I could have picked up an album or two but it would have been pot luck back then as I wouldn't know that he made albums like Reuben and the Jets, Apostrophe et AL. But going back to Prince if just a small percentage of fans stay and explore his back catalogue of music they are opening themselves up for a great which we as Prince can have alll experienced. I'm not say they'll go deeper into collecting bootlegs etc but even if they buy say Controversy and like it that's great and it keeps Princes music relevant today and will for future generations. But if we throw shade at folks who just like Raspberry Beret or whatever that does us and P a disservice as really we should be recruiting new fam into the Purple Army.

I'm with you. Wouldn't call it "love", though. Every microbe being upset about anything is part and parcel of the digital age. We all know how superficial that is.

Record sales is not always telling the truth about who loves his style or not. Prince albums are so diverse, that some people might love a few songs from a few albums, and still say they put him above any other artist. I own just a few James Brown albums. He is in my top five, even though he often sounds the same, and had a bunch of throwaway tracks.

This is not new for a lot of what people see as a "high profile person". It will die down (actually it already has). People will react and act like they love him again after the big August tribute, or when (hope to God they don't) they make his biofilm. Then....it will die down... For them. It will always effect me. It will always effect us. The REAL true funk soldiers. The REAL purple army. The real Paisley family. But I'm cool with it. WE'VE always been here. And once people stop pretending, we'll still have our Princey and he'll remain ours forever. I can't stand people that act like they care after the fact. I love that children are getting introduced to his music though. I hope that continues. But the few that only know Kiss and Purple Rain? The ones that will soon be buying Prince T-Shirts at Forever21 and then tossing them away after two months???...Get Outta here 4eva. Byiiiii

He will ALWAYS be my mine. Could care less what other people do. It's a fickle pickled world.

How many new members did the org take on after the 21st of April??

I think we're too busy trying to OWN Prince. We don't want to share him with lesser fans, lol. It's an ego thing. It's always someone that will notice an artist more after he or she disappears. Nothing weird about it. We've got about 7 billion people in the world. You can't truly know ALL music. Some stuff you'll discover or rediscover late.

Thank you, Replica. And as someone mentioned he didn't exactly make his music easily available. I'm in Europe and could boast of extra special fan status for owning 20Ten as I know many in the US have not been able to get that. I didn't join the Org till after April 21 because I visited some times back around Musicology and was put off by the hate here against Prince. So I'm more of a fan for owning 20Ten, but less for not joining the Org because I felt that our Prince was treated badly here? (Not going into a debate on whether or not he was and why, it was my impression at the time). Prince was a part of my musical life since the first hit when I was still a young girl. And he always mattered to me and held a special place in my heart.

After April 21, suddenly I got to hear a lot of music I didn't know. It became available. He missed out on so much love, appreciation and money by playing hard to get. I have spent a fair amount after April and would much rather have given it to him. His choices and I respect them, but they did have consequences and we're seeing them now.

Yeah, I get that vibe and feel weird about it, it's a little hostile. Like I'd fall under callimnate's "bandwagon" criteria by registration date, but I've lurked here since middle school. I maybe toned-down on the online stuff after he waged war on the internet, but I always kept up with his new music, I always said he was my #1 artist... ha, see, the vibe can be so hostile I feel like I need to justify my presence sometimes.

For me, though, and maybe that's because I didn't really get much Prince exposure when I was growing up, I think it's good people are more aware. It's not about the 24-year old taking the selfie with their Prince tee, it's about the 13 or 14 year old kid at home going, okay, this "When Doves Cry" is pretty cool, I've never heard this before. I need to hear more of this guy, wow, he sounds brilliant, wow what a genius, etc.

I agree. I've spent money I would rather have gone directly to him. It's as if after he died is how things should have been when he was alive. How was anyone supposed to discover prince when the one platform most youngsters use was almost completely devoid of Prince..I.e youtube.
I mean nevermind the music you couldn't even see an interview. That's one thing i don't get..why were none of his interviews not allowed on Youtube. I remeber I used to search for them. and come up with a very small handfull that I had already seen so many times.

And yes you're right..it's not only America that is grieving
..
Baby, you're a star.

Prince was never about trying to make his fans fight over who's the most real fan, and forseeing who will fall off the bandwagon a while after his death. He wanted to spread love, and we should too if we're actual fams.

I agree with you. I was off the Prince train for decades. I respected him, but I was not a member here, nor did I follow the ins and outs of his life and career. I did realize he was a genius and an icon, and on my personal list he was on a par with Bowie and both of them were right behind The Beatles for me. But I never went to his shows until 2013. Last night, I was at a Hollywood Vampires concert, and they performed two Bowie songs in tribute. Nothing for Prince. When I saw Peter Frampton last month, he performed a Bowie song. Nothing for Prince. Honestly, I don't think the audiences at either show would have known more than "Purple Rain" or something like "Raspberry Beret." The hits. The estate has got a lot of work to do or his legacy will fade away over time. JMO

And one other thing: I think most of you have probably heard about "Hamilton" being such a hit on Broadway (Prince went to see it and loved it - threw a party for the cast of that show as well as for "The Color Purple"). Anyway, what if Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of "Hamilton," wrote a show featuring the songs of Prince? Or if Cirque du Soleil created a Prince show in Las Vegas? Yes, both would mainstream Prince in a way he probably would not originally have liked, but I think he would have warmed up to it. Especially the Broadway show.
