I think we're too busy trying to OWN Prince. We don't want to share him with lesser fans, lol. It's an ego thing. It's always someone that will notice an artist more after he or she disappears. Nothing weird about it. We've got about 7 billion people in the world. You can't truly know ALL music. Some stuff you'll discover or rediscover late.

Thank you, Replica. And as someone mentioned he didn't exactly make his music easily available. I'm in Europe and could boast of extra special fan status for owning 20Ten as I know many in the US have not been able to get that. I didn't join the Org till after April 21 because I visited some times back around Musicology and was put off by the hate here against Prince. So I'm more of a fan for owning 20Ten, but less for not joining the Org because I felt that our Prince was treated badly here? (Not going into a debate on whether or not he was and why, it was my impression at the time). Prince was a part of my musical life since the first hit when I was still a young girl. And he always mattered to me and held a special place in my heart.

After April 21, suddenly I got to hear a lot of music I didn't know. It became available. He missed out on so much love, appreciation and money by playing hard to get. I have spent a fair amount after April and would much rather have given it to him. His choices and I respect them, but they did have consequences and we're seeing them now.

---He was an independent artist for the last 20 years he did the best he could do to get his music out. He never stopped touring and sold out the Oracle Arena a 20k stadium a month before he died he was loved and I hope he knew it.

I agree. I've spent money I would rather have gone directly to him. It's as if after he died is how things should have been when he was alive. How was anyone supposed to discover prince when the one platform most youngsters use was almost completely devoid of Prince..I.e youtube.
I mean nevermind the music you couldn't even see an interview. That's one thing i don't get..why were none of his interviews not allowed on Youtube. I remeber I used to search for them. and come up with a very small handfull that I had already seen so many times.

And yes you're right..it's not only America that is grieving
..

What crap I never had a problem finding Prince stuff on-line, boots, or buying his music or going to his concerts. Young people are lazy and like free shit. Prince wanted you to buy his music that is why for 20 years as an independent artist he worked every angle of distribution to the music to the fans and never stopped touring. He just wanted you to pay for it. If you can find that shit by Panda you should be able to find Prince.

My mom became a fan after his death. Not to be one of "those" people though. She liked a couple of his songs, but never got much into listening to his music. After he passed and she was hearing all of the unknown information about him she realized how much of a great person the world lost. She did not know that when he changed his name to prince he had a method to his madness, she thought when he did it he was just being weird. She didn't even know his real name was Prince, or that he knew how to play so many instruments that he taught himself, or that he was a humanitarian. After reading and hearing about all of this, she realized how great he was and the reason why I have been a fan and follower for so long.

Thanks for calling me young. I'm 51, my dear, probably been on the Internet longer than most here and definitely not lazy. Just had other things going on in my life that had a tad higher priority than getting friends to ask friends to buy a newspaper in the UK to get the latest cd from Prince. He made choices and accepted the consequences like a grown man without complaining. I suggest you do the same.

And which part of "I have spent a fair amount after April 21 and would much rather have given it to him" did you find hard to comprehend?

I don't remember this level of love during his life, record sales prove this.

He seemed to care far more about control and having a core of devoted fans and performing than record sales. Otherwise, he would have never taken the actions he did regarding his WB contract and his masters. I'm sure he respected AniDiFranco for never signing with a record label and starting her own label from the get go and not as a subsidiary of a larger company.

He deliberately throttled exposure on certain platforms because he felt it was exploitative. If he was just about units Lenz v. Universal Music Corp would have never happened.

Pretty much. As a Minnesotan it wasn't until after P died that we all realized how much we took him for granted.

And we thought he'd be around forever...

But what gives us the right to judge...are you saying real fans are only the ones who've been on this board?

Why question the love? Why not just embrace it? Be thankful that Prince was loved by many across many seas and in many different worlds.

How one chooses to demonstrate their love, appreciation, awe, respect and/or caring differs from person to person?

Do you think you're a "better real fan" than those who recently joined? Then you've completely ignored Prince's teachings inherent in his music. We are all the same. 💜🙏✌🏻️

--- My point here is that I could find his music if I wanted to find it and I actually was given my boots and I have never sold any. I brought all of the albums, CDs, posters and paid to see 10 concerts. Prince got plenty of my money and I have no regrets he deserved it. I would like to see young people buy some music and stop wanting everything to be free. If you like the music go buy it.

It's human nature to not appreciate what you've got, until it's gone.

Sales of every famous musician's albums has skyrocketed after their death, it's not just a Prince thing.

I feel much the same way your mom does. I was a fan of Prince's music years ago, but never followed too closely his later years. However, I felt such sadness hearing of this vibrant, wonderful musician passing so soon that I have spent countless hours reading and watching videos of his life and music. What a loss.

It really is annoying how some people ignore the legendary artists while they are alive, but when they die, they suddenly act like they were the biggest fan of that artist.I always say, appreciate these artists while they're still here. When they're gone,no one will replace them.

True. And this is pretty much the same as how I look at artists like James Brown. He is in my top 5 of all times, yet still I don't own alot of his albums. Some fans don't connect with the entire albums, but they connect with the artist, and the live performances. Prince also often sounds even better live, and some fans don't really like the 80s sound with drum programming, or the plastic 90s production. There's a bunch of people that are in love with the mid 70s sound, but still put Prince on the top for his songwriting and skills as a live musician.

I like to throw them for a loop and ask them which Prince songs they hate. A lot of the actual Prince fans will reply with something from the Tony M era, NEWS, Kamasutra, or maybe an album track that never got any airplay. But the non Prince fans, especially younger people, come up with hilarious answers that aren't even Prince songs. One fool said "Burn Rubber". Hell, that was The Gap Band. lol

I kind of don't understand why it has to become a pissing contest - "I'm the biggest fan because...". Surely it's brilliant if people are appreciating Prince's music, whether it is as a long-term fan or one which has only just discovered his greatness? Love is love, it's just some are more invested in a relationship than others.

Seems to happen quite a bit when a celebrity dies. It is a bit weird, though, when suddenly you find yourself in a conversation about Prince that you didn't start. I've been a fan since the early 80s and you would be hard pressed to find one day since that I haven't spun a P joint. His shows were well attended, so it's not like he was invisible to people. But yea, for every 100 people I met, I might find one willing and knowledgeable enough to rap about Prince. Now, everybody is an expert. I did try to join this place about ten years ago but for some reason this site would always freeze up on me so I bailed. Eh, I don't need nobody to tell me how to be a Prince fan anyway. I mean, have you read some of the comments made by long time members? "Didn't get into Lovesexy til a day ago!" Pfft, clearly I have been doing Prince better. razz. Did just fine w/o y'all because I had the man himself. Now that he's gone, there is some consolation to be found in kicking it with other fans, even if they are wrong about his music. Death changes things. Maybe some get curious, maybe some want to relive the glory days. Some people feel like a part of them died with Prince. I'm not one to question another's motives for why they are into Prince or came to the org, but I'll take anybody on in Prince trivia - and leave your god damn phone in the car cuz that ain't how real playas roll!

P.S. Totes just messin' about P appreciation, btw. Subjectively wrong is still wrong, however. smile.

I think a large part of it and to Prince's credit he had become almost mythological. In the last few years people who disliked him had become indifferent. He'd almost become a metaphor fir a certain style or behaviour. In this respect when he died his loss was beyond personal taste he had become part of the fabric, so it resonated regardless

Prince has enough love to go around for everyone.
Especially now.

I'm a late-comer and unknown what folks mean about jumping on the bandwagon. I also can't stand that when people do it when someone famous dies, or wins an election, or what have you.

But let me tell you I have stuck around. I am exploring all of his music, his faith, he's an example to me, I pray for him, I talk to him, and my friends think I'm NUTS.

And I'm having the time of my life.

I also sobbed and cried all these days and weeks with you all.

I guess I just got onto another track in life for many years and wasn't keeping up with what was going on.

Oh, yes. Hindsight and all that.

But I think it has more to do with the fact that we can't all follow everyone and know everything. I wouldn't have enough hours in the day.

There's is a very special reason I am realizing who Prince was and what that means for me - and true to how he was, I can't talk about it.

The way to get new fans is not to give them a shovel and ask them to dig. You may not have had trouble finding stuff because you're a long time fan. Yeah, I get that vibe and feel weird about it, it's a little hostile. Like I'd fall under callimnate's "bandwagon" criteria by registration date, but I've lurked here since middle school. I maybe toned-down on the online stuff after he waged war on the internet, but I always kept up with his new music, I always said he was my #1 artist... ha, see, the vibe can be so hostile I feel like I need to justify my presence sometimes.

For me, though, and maybe that's because I didn't really get much Prince exposure when I was growing up, I think it's good people are more aware. It's not about the 24-year old taking the selfie with their Prince tee, it's about the 13 or 14 year old kid at home going, okay, this "When Doves Cry" is pretty cool, I've never heard this before. I need to hear more of this guy, wow, he sounds brilliant, wow what a genius, etc.

Thank you, Replica and WhisperingDandelions!!!

This is exactly what I've been feeling about the org. While there is still a lot of love, hostile vibes are undeniable. Like Dandelions, I lurked because I didn't feel I would be warmly welcomed into the fold because someone would find my love unqualified.

I mustered up my courage and started to comment after his ascention. It helps to connect with friends of the world who are also grieving.

If someone is out there lurking, being crushed by grief and don't know what to do, please don't get taken aback by a bit of negativity you see here and there. There are many fans who want to share love and spread to the world how great he was. It doesn't matter if you are casual or new. Love41another.

Not defending anyone etc...just read the last comment and want to say that YouTube has DEFINITELY helped Prince, at least in my case...I would not be so taken with his talent if it weren't for all the vids.
And of course I've run out and bought 4 albums since then, and have only just begun! I still want more.

It took me a while to know where to start but because of the Internet (definitely including YouTube) I now have a clearer picture of his eras, albums, and what I want next.

The reason YouTube is so helpful is when I'm driving, I want to hear his music and can't watch YouTube obviously, so I pop in the albums I've bought. In fact I take MUCH LONGER drives than I need to!

Personally I LOVE all the love he's been getting since April. It would have been even harder if he'd left us and there was just silence. I'm happy people are talking about him/thinking about him/loving him. It helps to know there is love and respect across the world for him. With regards to the "bandwagon fan" (if this is even a real thing) I say welcome friend! Anyone who wants to listen to or appreciate or talk about or love Prince is fine by me 😀 Dip your toe in the water, you might decide to dive in and swim with the rest of us, you might never get further than that toe...but a single toe is better than nothing!

I also understand those who didn't really interact or join here until recently. I also didn't really like the hostile vibe I felt here.

Thank you. Like LadyAlchemy, I am also so glad you are all here. I've really needed a place to connect to people about Prince.
Also I think this is one of the nicest online communities I've ever been on. I didn't realize how kind Prince's fams were. Now that I realize who Prince was as a person, I'm not surprised.

It's like losing your grandma (or grandpa). You really didn't see her that much as you got older but when she died (mine lived to 102)you realize how much she really meant to you. You then go thru your pictures and want something that belonged to her. You start to find wisdom and meaning in all she said. The times you did get to spend together are now special.
I think there was lots of fans on different levels. I remember a girl in school that wore Prince concert shirts almost everyday, had her hair done like Prince, and had all the buttons and posters in her locker. I then saw her at a club one night years later and she had a Prince symbol tattoo behind her neck. True fan. I've known about this forum for years but only joined after his passing. I did it to be with others who shared the same appreciation for Prince. Also to help get over the grieving I'm feeling. I didn't realize how much Prince stuff I had accumulated over the years. Since he died I have found most of my albums,CD's,videos, and books. I'm not sure what level fan I am but I thought all fans were welcomed here.

--- All fans are welcome. I have been doing my best to complain about some posters and their abuse toward newbies.
