Which Prince songs, performances, albums induce frisson in you?

https://theconversation.c...usic-59719

Have you ever been listening to a great piece of music and felt a chill run up your spine? Or goosebumps tickle your arms and shoulders?

The experience is called frisson (pronounced free-sawn), a French term meaning “aesthetic chills,” and it feels like waves of pleasure running all over your skin. Some researchers have even dubbed it a “skin orgasm.”

….

Results from the personality test showed that the listeners who experienced frisson also scored high for a personality trait called Openness to Experience.

Studies have shown that people who possess this trait have unusually active imaginations, appreciate beauty and nature, seek out new experiences, often reflect deeply on their feelings, and love variety in life.

Some aspects of this trait are inherently emotional (loving variety, appreciating beauty), and others are cognitive (imagination, intellectual curiosity).

I think there are a lot of people here who are very open to experience.

I’ve been listening to Prince almost non-stop since his passing and one of the things I’ve noticed is how many times I’ve physically reacted to the music.

I’d be listening to a song and my ears would burn or my hands would tingle (whenever I feel great emotion, I start feeling it in my hands) or the hair on the back of my neck would stand up.

A lot of people on r/frisson mention Prince’s Radiohead “Creep” cover, the 2007 Superbowl performance and his solo on “My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as frisson inducing performances. I think we can name a lot more.

One Prince song that does it for me is “Adore.” Another is “The Beautiful Ones.” Which ones do it for you?

Which Prince songs, performances, albums induce frisson in you?

Housequake

It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night

Peach

To name a few.

I'll have to give the matter some thought but not until after I digest this new word I just learned and weave it into my vocabulary.

The fast part near the end of funknroll on AOA gets me every time, the synths and that whole section gives me chills and a general feeling of love and appreciation for music at that moment! There are many more, including the guitar solos on eye hate u and planet earth, they have similar frissonistic effects on me.
All u haters need to recognize, if u cant c right through these lies, good gawd!

"Frisson" is a french word meaning "a shiver".

I experience it frequently whilst listening to Prince. But what triggers it the most is whenever a Prince song comes unexpectedly on the radio. The same also used to happen whenever Prince was starting to play impromtu songs in concert, like the time he played "Thank You for talking to Me Africa".

Recently it has been the live version of Empty Room in Zurich - that guitar solo really gives me frissons everytime...

Thanks for bringing this up - it's something I've noticed too particularly with some of his live performances. For me Empty Room at Montreux 2009 when he goes into the guitar solo you can see he's "in the zone" (transcendence/connecting with source) and that's when I get chills. Maybe that has something to do with it?

It's not pronounced "free-sawn" in French, the last syllable is like the first of syllable of "onboard", but without any hint of a w or a n.

Just say chills it's easier.

I get that everytime I watch Prince perform "The Beautiful Ones" in the movie Purple Rain.

When you say "frisson" and the definition you gave (OP)...I understand it as not a "sexual" thing, but more a "visceral" response correct? If so,

Loving Strollin - very underrated (as is the mental Girl)

Condition of the Heart...again Livesxy 88

Purple Rain...I'm just so into the Nudity rehearsal version at the moment...it is abridged...but has some different melodic licks which make it a bit unusual...and because he doesn't sing much, when he does the "woo-hoo" chant....beautiful...simply beautiful cool

There's Joy in Repi-frission.

?

I dunno. I got nothing joke wise.

On point though and to the topic, I've been experiencing some Frisson of late. Wandering around the YouTube explosions that happened after he died. ON that bent, a few tracks always grab me/make me shake and tremble:

Joy in Repetition from the "It Aint Over" CD
The Super Bowl show

While My Guitar Gently Weeps for sure

Electric Chair on SNL
Da Bang, What's My Name and Calhoun Square back to back to back on Crystal Ball disc 2 always excites me. That's what I busted out the day he died.

To this day I'm pissed I never got to hear him play "Calhoun Square". I was an NPGMC member for the ONA tour and I was waiting in line on my friend who was running late. When he finally showed, I could hear Prince doing this number during sound check, but by the time we got in he was done. The price we pay for friendship, right?

...

But really it's been the back/closing end of AOA that just fucking kills me. "Way Back Home" and the "Affirmation" tracks hit me even then and hit me even harder now. Does gooseflesh count as Frisson because it's more like a body chill than the shakes that I experience? A bit like an electrical current.
