This news about the Purple Rain items saddens me...

All this time Prince has kept the outfit on a mannequin in the wardrobe room (at least to the last I heard anyway), and now they are going to start auctioning these things off? I know the yellow cloud guitar was just the first off the block but it makes me think they are thinking less along the lines of perserving what's there for a possible museum type place. That costume is iconic, it's <purple rain> is what catapulted him into super stardom. Why wouldn't they want to keep that there, display it proudly? Does this mean they likely won't be turning Paisley Park into a museum that treasures and displays these priceless items?? Are they just going to dismantle and sell everything? cry bawl

yellow cloud guitar was definitely from a private seller (and not tyka, the estate, or paisley park) and i believe these items are also.

You don't really believe the family/estate -- or anyone else in his "circle" -- provided those pieces. Or Prince. They were likely in someone's personal hollywood collection -- and they are auctioning them off because right now would be the best possible time to do so.

The estate hasn't even been settled yet, as far as I know. The seller sells Hollywood history. Look at their other auctions here on ebay.

Prince signature stage worn shirt from the Purple Rain Tour. Lot 1692
Prince prop diamond and pearl necklace with paisley clasp from the... Lot 1693
Prince "The Kid" signature shirt from Purple Rain. Lot 1689
Prince's custom stage worn Graffiti Bridge cufflinks. Lot 1694
Prince "The Kid" signature motorcycle jacket from Purple Rain. Lot 1690
Prince stage worn over the knee black suede boots from his internati... Lot 1691

I'm guessing these might be from the collection of one of his former managers, or the person in charge of the wardrobe of both films. This is all WB stuff from no later than 1990. And for them to say it was the jacket, there was probably more than one jacket. Definitely way more than one shirt. So, to say that it is THE shirt is kind of misleading.

Isn't his PR raincoat on display in Hard Rofck Cafe in New York? Or is that a replica?

And wasn't the Diamonds and Pearl necklace part of the collection that Mayte was selling? confuse $3000 - $5000 for a fake, faux necklace? Hell to that naw! lol

.
There is more than one Purple Rain outfit. There could be several. After all, you needed duplicates for filming and all those stage shows. There has been one in a minneapolis museum for years....and was on display for two months.
They had to take it down for preservation due to fading.

Oh relax!
1st of all the yellow cloud guitar was NOT one that was used by P. It was a replica, and a bad one at that. Stupid buyer for spending $100,000s without doing their research/homework. razz lol

And as for these items, they aren't owned by the "estate" as someone else here pointed out.
They're not even that impressive. The shirts are nice but a set of cufflinks and a necklace that anyone could reproduce isn't that major at all.

When his PR motorbike is on eBay, THEN fell free to start a thread on how sad life is.

I know *nothing* about guitars and the auctioned guitar does not look like the one used by Prince:

I think the Yellow Cloud that was auctioned was a Warner's Bros. item not PP. There can't just be one though because the Smithsonian has one also I believe.

admission is easy, just say U believe, then come 2 this place in your heart.

That makes sense. Although $137,000 is a lot of money, that same man paid $2.5 million for Ringo's drums.

I guess I'm learning as time goes on. Not sure there is a "best possible time" to profit no matter where the items came from. Have no desire to check out auction items. I would much rather cherish and enjoy the music that was GIVEN to all of us

Per reply #2, there is no ONE coat or ONE shirt from wardrobes. There is ALWAYS a back-up, or multiples.

Would suck if they had to shutdown filming because a piece of ketchup or something fell on a his shirt, or if a bird shit on his jacket and it needed to be cleaned.

Also, I love that folks are still discussing whether that cloud guitar was real or not. No auction house like Heritage is going to risk it's reputation by selling something fake.

Heritage has sold LOTS of fakes. And got caught at it. Their history is not clean.

I'm pretty certain the yellow cloud guitar auction mystery was solved in another thread. It was one of the replicas sold by 800-NEW-FUNK in the 90s. It was not a guitar Prince ever played or touched.

When did Prince hold the auction (garage sale?) at Paisley Park? I wanna say it was around the time of the original celebration.

Pretty sure that included parts of the set from SOTT.

That's not about "our" Prince.

I understand where you're coming from and I agree. And above that: those items are baught by people just for the sake of collecting in order to tell their friends at a party that this item belonged to Prince. It has nothing to do with the love his music. Like the guy who baught the Yellow Cloud guitar seems to have an entire collection.
These kinda people do this not out of admiration for Prince but simply because they can. And in the process excluding all others who are true fans.

Just to add to suomynona's woes......

The PR When Doves Cry jacket up for bids is ALSO a replica of the jacket that was worn in the movie.

It was sold in a previous auction which clearly states that it's a replica made by Cat's Pyjamas in Venice Beach.
