'SISTER' - what the fuck was he thinking? * Playing on sexuality, race, religion
* Explicit lyrics * Bikini briefs and trench-coats * Ejaculating guitar That was all cool back then - but... 'incest is everything it's said to be' what the fuck is that about? what the fuck is that shit about? Can any of the wise old school (supernova, calhoun sq, rdhull, etc) offer an explaination or defence for 'sister'?

Dirty Mind, the album, was deliberately provocative in nature; it was designed to be shocking. Some might argue that it is not authentic...

I have no defense for this song, I can't even listen to it Someone mentioned on another thread that he fantasized about having sex w/ his sister to write this song but I never looked @ it like that. Could have been based on someone he knew, something he heard about - you never know. But I agree w/ Anji that the intent was to shock. He was all about being "in your face" w/ stuff @ that time IMO...

WHAT THE FUCK ARE 'YOU' THINKING!?
This song is fucking great. So rock&roll! So 'I don't give a fuck what you think of me!" "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

Even though "Sister" is a disturbing song,it works in the context of the album. It was clearly designed to shock people and get alot of controversy.I don't think it's autobiographical or anything. Now that he is a JW,I bet Prince regrets doing that song, but he was a different person back then.
Was Prince abused a child? Sometimes you have to wonder. In 1980,he does a song called "Sister",which basically claims he was raped by his sister. Then,in 1994,he does a song called "Papa",where he basically says he was physically abused by his father.

Papa also sounds like it was designed to be shocking; I'd be surprised if it's autobiographical.

I'd be more suprised if Sister was because he sounds like he enjoyed reflecting on that experience.

Prince was in a defiant and rebellious mood on that record. It could be that he was angry about a lot of things in his childhood, the way he was treated by his father. Those angry feelings could have given rise to a provocative song about having sex with his sister.
Maybe he was angry with his sister and was projecting his anger onto her by fantasising about having sex with her. Or maybe Prince fantasised about Michael Jackson being his sister, eh mistermaxx? As for the shocking nature of the song go to the source, who said that he wasn't being deliberately shocking, he was deliberately being himself.

That song is genuinely disturbing. In that sense it fulfills its goal.
Prince was being controversial and it worked. As Davideye said it suits the context of the album. I do not believe its autobiographical however. Its no more true to life than 'Another lonely Christmas'.

Its just a song, christ it isnt like he actuall released a clip of him having sex with his sister.
I actually think the song is quite good, and amuzing in a way. And the actual lyric is "She's the reason for my, uh, sexuality" As for Papa, it is another great song, I think you are all reading to much in2 all of this. Next U will b saying that he was suicidal when he wrote Sometimes it Snows in April. http://www.discography.de/index0.html

's only a song, ladies and gentlemen...and a pretty cool one, at that (save 4 the subject matter, which is sorta creepie). it's almost like a ramones song, in the way that it's no more than a minute long...and quite frankly, ya'll shouldn't be complainin about it, the damned thing ends just as soon as it starts!

Let's see...
"My sister never made love to anyone else but me...she's the reason for my bisexuality" Or... "My sister never made love to anyone else but me...she's the reason for my,uh,sexuality" Or... "My sister never made love to anyone else but me...she's the reason for my fucked up sexuality" Isn't it funny how we all hear something different?

I always interpreted the the references to 'incest' and 'fucking' as being screwed by those closest to you. ie. your family. By this, i do not mean in the sexual sense but moreso in the context of 'u are my parents, my brother/sister and you let me down'
that or he's just one dirrrty mutha fucka You do as I say

I LOVE this song, I think it's a stroke of genius as a pop song - and PERFECTLY placed on the album.
Just when the listener thinks he can't get any more explicit after 'Head' - BOOM!! [This message was edited Mon Mar 31 8:49:08 PST 2003 by MiaBocca] --------------------
