Was Prince gerascophobic? I've been watching some footage of Prince from the late 90s, and I've been wondering if he had reconciled with the fact that he was in 50s psychologically? He makes remarks in various interviews even before he officially converted to the JW faith imply that he may not have wanted reach a certain age bracket. Was his lack of acknowledgement of time based partly on the notion that he was a bit AFRAID of aging? In '99, Matt Lauer asked him if he would still be performing when he is 55. He said, "If I still look like this." On his 40th birthday, he was doing an interview on GMA or Today Show and a fan was holding a sign that said "Happy 40th" and he mentioned how weird that number looked with his name next to it. Or when he interviewed with Larry King and Larry says "You're 41 now, right?". Prince says "That's what they tell me." And of course, the "If I make it to 60" comment that he made to Robyne Robinson. Not implying that he was suicidal or anything, but his candid comfort with death sometimes seemed more based on the fact that he just didn't want to be 'old' than the optimism of his faith's view of the afterlife since those comments were made pre-2001. Gerascophobic? C'mon.
Rock stars don't do "aging" well. None of his superstar peers (not musically but in terms of fame, so think Madonna & MJ) handled aging well at all.
He was in a business that worships youth and beauty. Now obviously he could've still just played concerts of his greatest hits but that also has the psychological dimension of making him feel like his best days were behind him.
Plus from what we know, he did wear out his body quite a bit. For all the jokes about not cracking and aging, he did have multiple joint and limb problems. Not being able to move makes you feel old. Knowing that the crowd goes the craziest for the splits and the jumps off speakers you can no longer do, that your fans are most passionately fond of the mid 20s version of yourself. Realizing that all of your grandparents are gone and your parents are gone and you don't have children. I wouldn't be surprised if he had joint issues in his arms and hands.
Maybe the whole last tour setup and his announcing of his autobiography and all of these other things was him gearing up to announce that no really, he wasn't going to tour or make new music anymore, that he was going to retire from music

Not discounting the effects of aging on his body and psyche, but he first started making comments of this nature in his late 30s...BEFORE all of what you mentioned even transpired, when he was still very much 'baby-faced'. Michael had psychological issues with his appearance in general---he started plastic surgery in his 20s, so I didn't necessarily see it as a byproduct of aging. I know that Madonna has had some work done recently which is not surprising at almost 58 and the sheer nature of industry pressure, but I'm not aware of her being oddly vocal about death 20 years ago. Prince started all of this dialogue so early in his life, in my opinion, I wonder if being 50+ shell-shocked him as much as being 40+ sometimes seemed to.

I keep coming to that conclusion. [Edited 6/24/16 13:39pm] Man, he must've really been feeling bleak about something. The human epitome of music retiring. Had he lived, I can't say I could even picture that.

I really wondered about that, too, when I heard the sudden announcement of an autobiography and the nature of his last tour. The memoir announcement seemed so out of character for him... I didn't know that, but it makes sense after I was reading his tour history last week. He was on tour during a portion of every year for the last 40 years, except maybe like 2 or 3 years. In addition to whatever award shows, videos, talk show, and other televised event performances he did. Whew, that's a lot.

Yes, anyone who has taken a look at his Schudule can see he had to tired and I cannot believe he was high out of his mind working at that pace. No why was he taking drugs the whole of his carreer.

I actually think Prince was afraid of death and the reason he agreed to write his memoirs was because he realized, as we all do, that time was quickly passing and, like it or not, his was going to run out.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I kind of agree with this mixed with the other comment earlier about him possibly going into retirement. I can see him maybe announcing retirement and letting the memoirs be the final curtain call with him finally breaking down that wall of privacy to let everybody in and finally get to know Prince from the beginning in his own words. Probably would've been amazing. "In the beginning God made the sea, but on the seventh day he made me."

Prince would never have retired from making music. Not ever. That's what he lived and breathed. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I agree. Prince had to make music not matter what. Even if noone heard it he would still be making music. It was in his DNA

Prince was a man going through a mid-life crisis. Very simply. In your 30s coming up on 40 you realize you're not young anymore. A lot of men, if they're not already there are, are losing their hair, graying, their ability to stay up all night and bounce back (if they're not nocturnal), their staying power... all kinds of things. A typical mid life crisis has men changing their career, possibly changing their wife or partner for a younger one, and buying something from their youth, buying a shiny expensive toy and changing philosophies in the opposite direction. A lot of men, if they're not already married, get a fire under their asses and get married quickly. This happens at 30 as well, but some men miss it. I've seen this a lot. Prince married an almost child bride who happened to be in the right place at the right time, broke with his long time partner company of WB, switched his religion, and changed his name to a symbol. If he started making those comments after his kids died, that's a huge indication of thoughts of mortality. If his parents had illnesses at this time, he would have been dealing with that too. You also start thinking about things when you approach the age things happened in your parents' lives. [Edited 6/24/16 19:38pm]

Not sure if this was mentioned above, but Eric Leeds said in a recent interview that he didn't see Prince as an old man and Prince "sure didn't see himself like that.".

I somewhat agree. I think he knew he needed out. He respected sly stone leaving the music world. Like Quest love said on billboard awards. I think he planned to get out at some point. Health broke media persecution with age ( Bill Cosby ) and other factors we may never know speeded the process to b4 the age of 60. The full circle moons and references to his father and emotion leaving the stage was like he knew that was his last show in Atlanta. Anne Christian song references Atlanta. And that song strongly signifies what is going on right now with killing hatred and guns. Sad. Isn't it.? It's very hard to be here without my rock! Both my rocks r gone. I think he got out in time. For Mj it was too late.

I don't think Prince saw himself as the age he was. He's a Gemini we don't think age lol. No really in an interview he was asked at 40 what does it feel like to be 40? And he said I don't know I'm 17!

I believe that. I feel like a kid. I think ageless.
People also think I'm 20 years younger than I am. I tell them listening to Prince music is the fountain of youth. [Edited 6/24/16 22:09pm]
