falloff highfive

One of my girlfriends insisted we watch it a day or two after he passed. I was still a mess but I knew she was trying to support me by showing interest. We start watching and her eyes immediately went omg I knew exactly what she was looking at. She goes "You never told me Prince had it like that!" lol Definitely the laugh I needed at that time. But I don't mind the DVD. That dancer he had bugs me more than anything. That hideous blonde wig, why?

I don't think it's that bad, it's just that it was frustrating that so few Prince live performances are/were available in digital format.

I mean, for years it was difficult to get SOTT on a digital format, at least here in the UK. I'm talking around the time that Rave came out. For many years, all you'd find in stores would be Rave or Aladdin. There was no digital release of PR Live, Lovesexy Live, or SOTT available in stores.

Rave 2000 is OK, it has it's moments. But it obviously doesn't compare to things like Lovesexy Live. So it was frustrating that this was so widely available and other things weren't available at all.

Good points. For one of the greatest live performers of all time, the audio and video recordings don't do him justice. The energy and thrill of a Prince concert do not translate well to artificial means. I guess that was the point..."see me in the flesh."

It's already been said, but I'm gonna say it again: those slow-mo insert shots of Prince making "you really like me!" faces cheese me out every time! lol

We should start a Prince fashion thread. I guess the picture thread sort of is one but one that just focuses on cool/not cool/weird clothes might be fun. I always dug the freaky things he wore.

It always cracks me up whenever anyone comments on Prince's fashion, especailly Rave.

"WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!?!" My God, the dude wore a trench coat, high heels and bikini briefs in 1982. Posed naked on a Pegasus with flowing 70's hair in 1979. The Liza Minelli hair and the cloud suit in Raspberry Beret. He dressed in drag for Lovesexy and Camille and looked like a shorter, blacker Adam Ant. The assless pants and macrame yellow bananna suit on MTV in 1990. the incredibly strange hair styles, cop hat with chains and symbol costumes of the Mayte/Love Symbol album years. The full robe with the 16 inch top hat with a rose through it and a veil during Exodus. He wore a corset on the cover of Planet Earth. He wore full suits with his own album art on them like a store bought Halloween costume. His afro in his last years looked like an unkempt bird's nest with three eggs formed by the third eye sunglasses falling out of it. The all orange jumpsuit at the Grammys. High heeled sneakers.

But oh, no...oh my stars and garters, I believe I am gettin the vapors from the ALL BLUE SUIT and the corn rows. That was just too fucking much. More than my delicate sensibilities can handle. I get the feeling that some of you would go "holy shit! David Bowie SHAVED HIS EYEBROWS and WORE A DRESS as Ziggy/Alladin Sane".

What artist have some of you been following all these years?

Do you guys freak out when you watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show too? My God, the guy was a gender bending cross dressing FREAK before it was barely cool and who never seemed to wear the same thing twice. Part of the fun was seeing what the fucking guy would come up with next. The only thing he never did was do full on bald/shaved head or go total Fred Sanford and I wished he'd lived long enough for me to see it, because you KNOW he eventually would have, just to DO IT.

I was giggling my way through this post and then busted out with a full lol when I got to the "oh my stars and garters, I believe I am gettin the vapors" part.So. . . thank you for that lol

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. . .

I think the start of the DVD is great. three classics in a row. But then the DVD looses the 'live concert' feeling. Because of other acts being thrown in at random. Jams taking too long. The crowd not being in to it.

At the end of it all 1999 is raped big time.

I do like Lenny in it though (as a seperate performance in itself).

Wellllll at some point in time every artist folds in on himself, and grinds himself into a parody - too much Larry Graham and an ill fitting smurfsuit can do that to the strongest of men. lol

Agree with this. 1999 was a letdown, especially since it was the finale and the theme of the whole show. I guess Prince wanted to try and do something special with it but, yeah, it was flat.

I'm not going to comment on his nuts again here. But seriously, just look at the cover of that DVD. Good god. Oops, I commented on his nuts.

ANYWAY, I think there are two primary reasons why I was underwhelmed by the DVD:

1) I had seen so many awesome Paisley Park shows right around that time, and they ALL blew the NYE show away. Completely.

2) I read all the reports of the unpleasant and unsatisfying experiences of the audience at Paisley the nights that Prince filmed. The old purple & black Org was full of disappointment over those events.

Seriously though, no other goofy Prince outfit exposed his nuts in such a crazy way.

Because:

1. We've all been to concerts a thousand times better.
2. Because most fans don't care to hear lyrics of our favorite tracks re-written based on religious beliefs.
3. If we want to see awesome concert footage, we'll watch SOTT or Purple Rain.
4. Way too much Larry Graham.

5. Way too much Lenny Kravitz.

6. Way, way, way too much looking like the long lost member of Kris Kross.

7. Kirk Johnson on drums.

That's just from memory -- having only watched the DVD once. I'm sure there are many other reasons, such as possible medleys.

How much better would it have been if he simply released Small Club on DVD?

That was the problem with Prince. He loved releasing stuff that promoted lesser artists -- rather than the great shows where he truly shined. With any luck, the estate will handle things much differently.
