3121....... Finally

Like many others I'm now listening to many of Prince's later albums with more objective ears and most recently have revisited 3121.

I am now finally blown away by it as an album and in particular by some of the tracks that I skipped originally such as Lolita which I now love.

Feels like a new album to me..... Anyone else loving this album more since Prince passed?

I always liked it. It was a good follow-up to Musicology, more dance-oriented, but with a lot of good songs, especially Beautiful, Loved and Blessed and The Word. I also like the latin influence, that was something new. And the opening track is just bumping! Who would not want to drink champagne from a glass with chocolate handles?? martini chocolate tease

I loved this cd from the beginning. 3121, Love, Beautiful, Loved and Blessed, Incense and Candles, and Fury are my favorites. I know Black Sweat was considered the hot song, it just never did anything for me boxed

I always loved 3121. It was my first Prince album so it has a special significance in my collection. A collection which now includes physical copies of EVERY Prince, The Time, Sheila E, Andre Cymone and The Family/FDeluxe albums. It all started with 3121. My boyfriend at the time was a massive Prince fan but I didn't pay much attention to him until 3121. Not long after the album was released, maybe two or three months, we broke up and he left the album in my house by mistake. I listened to it on repeat for weeks. At first, it was just as a means of getting over the break up but then I found myself really enjoying the music so because me and my ex are still best friends, I "borrowed" more and more of his CD's. I gave some back to him after buying my own copies but I did keep a lot of them. wink

But anyway, the reason I'm a Prince fan is because of the 3121 album.

Me. I like chocolate but not champagne. I think I might get kicked out of 3121 for eating everybody's handles smile.

To answer op's question: nope. Prince's death hasn't changed my appreciation for any of his studio releases. Love the album. Such a great title track.

i just can't stand listening to this version of "the dance". if it had been replaced with something

else (wasn't there an outtake called 'streets of panama' mentioned?) i would love it from start
to finish. some of the songs aren't *quite* as strong as others but they are all enjoyable and a
lot of them are simply great.

Out of all of his albums, this is the one that I have changed my mind about the most. I think that I was originally disappointed that it was so conventional but now enjoy it's catchiness, consistency, and funkiness.

I haven't changed my mind about 3121.

There are parts I like but too many songs don't gel :

3121 the song is tepid and pointless. It has some great sounding parts, but no bite... I don't really wanna go. Lolita channels Prince's early records (Soft and Wet) but ends up sounding like the anti-thesis of I Wanna Be Your Lover, it's frustrating. I like Black Sweat, Love, Fury, BLB, even Ti Amo... but overall this bored me as a record. By comparison, Musicology was a jolt to the senses.

I think Prince's lifestyle was too Hollywood at the time... or as Hollywood as a JW can get.

Really highlights how long and powerful his output and influence was ... your first album was 3121 and mine was Conroversy and both soundtracked strong memories...

Soooo... You're 26... Which means you were 16 and this was your first Prince album... When I was 16 I heared If I Was Your Girlfriend on the radio... I can't imagine what it must have been like to hear this as your first Prince album... Maybe a bit like when, after Prince, I heared James Browns Sexmachine on the radio and wanted to get i to his music...

Nice analogy. I got into James via MJ talking about him in the early 80's, saw 'The Blues Brothers' and 'Rocky IV' and there it was.. A huge back catalogue of brilliance for me to go back and explore. I kind of envy new fans discovering Prince now, of course It's tragic he's gone but what a trip for any newbies coming along. Good for them.

Not one of my favorite albums. I never liked the title track nor most of the tracks; I love Black Sweat though. And I even flew to Vegas to catch Prince in concert twice at Club 3121 at Rio Las Vegas.

yeahthat One of favorite aspects of the org lately has been to hear how many of the new and "lesser" albums have their die-hard fans! It always inspsires me to give things another listen.

I wasn't a 3121 fan originally, but pulled it out again recently...ahem. A totally new appreciation for it now - Lolita is one of my faves from this album, as well as Incense and Candles (could do without the autotune though, but still a good one.)

I'd say it was the best of his newer releases/last decade, the last one I really absorbed, and the last one to hold my attention, until Art Official Age.

I am damn surprised Black Sweat wasn't a bigger hit.

This was the first Prince albums that I discovered after I got into Prince in high school. Its hard to pick my all time favorite song from that album, but I really like 3121, Te Amo Corazon, Fury, and you can't go wrong with Black Sweat. Plus he was so sexy in that era

Loved it on first listen and love it even more now. I will never forget hearing Get On The Boat live at Macy's on 7/7/7 and 3121, Beautiful, Loved and Blessed and Black Sweat live at the Tamar show..... biggrin

I always wished to hear him perform The Dance and Incense and Candles live too.

Not the OP, but I'm glad to see that people are finally starting to give Prince's post Warners brilliance more consideration. It's like people are beginning to look beyond 1989 and I think it's great not to limit ones self to only a portion of the full experience. Dude was badass till the day he left us.

Loved this album. I played it over and over!!! Each track had its own glory. The 3121 shows, the artwork, the music was everything and I must say one of the best experiences for me as a Prince fan.
